Keane: Not Good Enough to Win But Deserved a Draw
Keane: Not Good Enough to Win But Deserved a Draw
Tuesday, 28th Sep 2010 22:57

Boss Roy Keane felt his side didn’t do enough to win but probably deserved a draw from the 1-0 defeat at Reading. The Town manager had no complaints regarding Luke Hyam’s sending off for a second bookable offence.

Keane said: “I’m not sure we deserved to win and I’ve been in enough games where it’s nip and tuck with five or 10 minutes to go and the home side usually seem to nick it, and that’s what happened tonight.

“The first goal was vital tonight. Jason had a great chance in the first half. I thought we didn’t play too badly, but if you don’t score goals you put yourself under pressure.

“Again, no goals tonight. We only got the one on Saturday and we’ve had chances, some good chances, the same on Saturday. So, from these two away games, instead of being disappointed with four points, we end up with one.

“We should have won on Saturday and we probably should have got a point tonight. The goal came from a set piece when we should have done better, we were a bit slow getting out. Disappointing. We need to do better.”

Keane had no complaints regarding Luke Hyam’s red card: “I think it was coming and I should have taken him off at half-time.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott was pleased with the way his team kept pushing to the end: “It’s a real testament to the desire and the will of the players that they keep going. We had a good shape to us tonight.

“It was a decent game between two good sides and we’re fortunate to come out on top with the win.

“If you keep going and you’re trying to win it at 0-0 anything can happen. That’s really important to me. There’s a big difference between one point and three points. If you play like that sometimes you might lose a game, but I’ll accept that.”

Great to see Keane not making a point about Reading players imploring the ref to send off Hyam. TBH in all my years of watcking Ipswich I cant remember our players ever doing that.

no hyam or norris for saturday then...livermoore and leadbitter in a 4-4-2 i guess it'll have to be....only we dont have many options atm seeing as we dont have anyone that will score with relative ease. Need to dip into the loan market again keane youre not doing your job

ChambersM,, you never have a good word to say about RK on any posts and this post goes to show how you simply say things against Keane just for a bit of controversy. My point being that only a week or so ago I recall on one of your posts you asking someone to give you the benefits of loaning players to our club as you felt there were none. Now you are saying Roy isn't doing his job because he's not bringing the loanees in.

Get a real opinion on things and don't just say things against keane just because it stirs it up a bit.

Disappointing month that has an eerily similar look to last season. Only 5 goals scored in 6 matches. That is simply just not going to get you promoted. I for one would sit Scotland out on Saturday until he learns you at least have to make the goalie stop the ball.

Norris out Saturday is going to really test the mettle of the squad.

I know exactly what post you're talkin about and I can assure you it wasn't me who posted it. Get your facts right pal. Keanes job is to bring in new players that we need, no? He isn't....therefore not doing his job. (granted that isn't his only job, another is to coach the team (when we havnt got the players we need) how to score.....and truthfully hes not doing that either. You're right I dont like keane, but for good reason.

i knew when we signed jason scotland it would take a bit of time for him to settle and gain match sharpness but how long will it be? it needs to happen for him soon

can i just say i dont understand some of the comments made on this page. for starters i belive that we did do enough to secure a win. the madjaski stadium is not a place to come to and expect an easy ride (nor with any half decent team in this divion) simply outdone by one moment. for seconds, RK iis doing his job. brought in some decent solid players in odea, scotland townsend, livermore as well as blodding youth like hyam reggie lamb conner wickham. for thirds scotland (although he missed his chance, the best in the world do aswell ya know) looked veryb sharp created the chance from nothing and has scored 2 goals in 3 games (or is it 4)

tonight we showed guile cunning and more importantly fight which we have lacked for some time. for all those therte tonmight great support and lets get back on it on saturday!

Was pleased with performance, still lacking some creativity from midfield. Peters had a good game at left back. Looking forward to seeing more of Livermore.

Thought it was a good performance-but not a great result. Once again forced to listen to it on the radio so did not get a completely fair reflection of the game.
Shame we have dropped out of the top 6- but hopefully can get back in there next game.
Still feel we need a couple of reinforcements (not meaning to be negative-just feel we need a bit more firepower and a right-back...). Investment needs to be made now,- not in January......

Just a quick mention of how strong Jamie Peters was last night, one of if not the best game I have seen him play in an Ipswich shirt, had there winger wrapped up all game and didn't put one foot out of step.

Full marks (again!) to the away support. You definitely made yourselves heard over the radio. As for the match - you win some and you lose some. It didn't sound as if we were outplayed, but we do need to put away our chances. COYB, let's put 7 past Leeds!

No Hyam or Norris for Leeds at home Saturday, do not think this will be a problem as we need to play 4.4.2 at home anyway so Hyam would have been rested and Norris has been quiet last couple of games so will do him good to have a rest and will give a chance to Livermore to show what he can do. If Preston can six at Leeds then surely we can get some goals on Sat.?

I am starting to think we are wobbling a bit just now! I never thought we would continue as we were but last minute goals and not scoring does concern me slightly! Onward we march to the war with leeds - a test at home to calm my nerves! COYB's

Keano has been saying for weeks now we have not been playing well, so it took Mcdermott (Mat Lucus lookalike ) to beat us on tactics. How this league changes so quickly, 2 weeks ago we were 2nd now we are out of the playoff zone.
1pt out of 6 and 1 goal is not good enough.I do not know what Keano can do next, because Leeds will be no pushover.
Let us all hope that something will go for us on Sat.I am sure Bruce will have something to prove to keano

agree with post about Jamie Peters, he was emmsense tonight, i saw him lined up against Jimmy Kebe, and it looked a total mismatch, especially as Kebe has been playing well of late, but Jamie was exceptional. Andros Townsend had another fine game, and looks better every time i see him.
Just one quick point, and its not a moan, just a point of notice, Scotland seemed very much on his own tonight, i know he was playing up front on his own, however that is supposed to be with support. i didnt see this very often. You only notice it more because the ball is launched in to him, he has a good touch, and at times made their centre halves look poor, but he had no one to work with, and often found himself running across the pitch till someone joined in the play!
Our defence looks a secure unit every time i see them play, and i only think we'll be winning games by the odd goal, not by landslides.

Chambers, in regards to your comment, RK identifies the players he wants to bring to this club, it's Simon Clegg that is not doing his job by not bringing them in. RK wanted to bring in (Chopra,MaCormack etc..)

And you have 'good reason' not to like RK? Let me guess, maybe you saw him at Ipswich Rail Station one day and he gave you 'the look' ?? hahaha Loser!

Solid start to the season, I'm very pleased - The positives are that we are pretty tight at the back, good balanced midfield and our strikers are creating chances (remember Scotland has hardly played any 1st team football in 2 years) the boy need 5/6 games to get going!!

Well done to all you Supporters who correctly stand by and recognise the qualities of our Manager, he is doing his best and although we are not scoring nowhere near enough goals at present, we are playing with great determination and commitment, which has been inspired by Roy Keane's passion for not only Football but very much for our club ITFC, be proud and fully supportive of the complete package at Ipswich and maybe, just maybe we will achieve something this season, we all want that, I have great belief in Connor Wickham's ability but hope that he does not pick up too many cards for petulance or over reactionary aggression, I do however very much applaud his spirit and efforts.

Christ!! I feel sorry for any of you that have the unfortunate displeasure of sitting next to Chambers watching games. Hopefully you're tucked up high in the Brittania stadium Chambers, as far away from me as possible.

'I don't like Roy Keane...' blah blah, we get, we know - we don't care fella, it's boring.

Wasn't at the game tonight. How did O'Dea play at centre back? Livermore to start on Saturday then in a 4-4-2.

My feelings are that we looks so much more solid than last year which can only be good thing. The defence is looking like a real cohesive unit and Delaney is still to come back - Roy has done a good job there. Special praise to Peters who has been all over the place and is doing really well this season - had a great game last night.

In midfield, I really like Norris and Leadbitter - proper Roy kind of players - always getting stuck in but maybe as a pairing, a little too similar. We are missing a bit of skill and guile in that area. Livermore will have to play Sat so be good to see what he is like. Hyman is young and an enforcer so we are going to see a few more reds from him I'm sure but his future looks promising. Townsend will excite and frustrate in equal proportions but so much better than Martin and Lamb looks very good from what I saw of him at Millwall and his small contribution yesterday.

Upfront worries me. I go to games thinking that we won't lose as we are so solid but never think we have the goals in us to win. Scotland looked laboured upfront on his own and as a poacher, should have taken last night's chance. Wickham does look good but think he's putting too much pressure on himself and Priskin is a confidence player but Roy has no patience to give him a run of games. I keep hoping that one of them will score two games running which will lead to a glut of goals but I'm just not that sure it's going to happen.

We are looking so much better than last year and I am sure we will not lose many games. I know it's still too early to make a call but I think we will make the play offs with automatice places being a bit beyond us.

Keanish, I think you'll find that Chambers and Suffolk Sam car share to Norfolk most Saturdays - not for football, think they go shopping together!

And Chambers, your comment about being light in midfield because it'll be leadbitter and Livermore at the weekend at wrong, Midfield is the one areas of the pitch we aren't light on - Norris, Leadbitter, Hyam (blooded by keane - so I suppose you reckon he should still be in the ressies), Healy, Peters, Townsend, Edwards, Lambe, Quinn (albeit injured) and Livermore (just brought in by Keane as cover - hence doing his job...).

It just surprises me that people can be so blinkered by petty prejudices.

And Suffolk Sam - Most obvious budgie name ever!

With the exception of QPR, most teams in the championship looks pretty even. The three that came from Premier are not going to dominate and the three from League 1 are not whipping boys! Expect every team to move up & down through the league as its going to be a very tight division this season.
No team is perfect, last season we were a shambles from the back & all the way through the core of the team. The keeper position has been well sorted and the defense looks to be solid and strong. The midfield is combative and competative. Up front we have a few options (Wickham, Scotland, Priskin with maybe Lambe or Murray). Most of the deadwood has been cleared away with good youth players coming in.
A good home form is going to be vital and the team that can get some away away wins will be in the top half. RK has set up the team to be competitive and hopefully with a little luck (form fitness & injuries) we will do well.
