Clegg: New Manager In the Coming Days
Clegg: New Manager In the Coming Days
Friday, 7th Jan 2011 12:05

Chief executive Simon Clegg says he hopes to appoint Town’s new manager in the coming days. Clegg was speaking at a Portman Road press conference this morning where he confirmed Roy Keane’s exit from the club.

Clegg said: “I hope to be in a position to make an announcement regarding the new manager over the coming days and I can assure you that he will have the support and the resources available to help him to achieve the objectives we have set for this club.

“This morning I have been up at the training ground and have spoken to the coaching staff, to all of the players and separately to the senior professionals. I have also asked coach Charlie McParland to take over as caretaker-manager. I would expect him to be in place as caretaker-manager for as long as necessary until such time as we are able to appoint and announce a new manager.

“Charlie will certainly be responsible for preparing and leading the team for our vital game in the FA Cup against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and if necessary the Arsenal game as well.”

Clegg says the Blues game Keane ample time to succeed but that a line had to be drawn: “In the best traditions of the club, we wanted to give Roy Keane sufficient time to get things right and to improve the situation. However, as he has said himself on a number of occasions, the performances on the pitch since November simply haven’t been good enough.

“Despite investment in the playing staff there was a lack of improvement on the pitch and the results speak to themselves.

“We all carry a degree of responsibility for this failure and I include myself in this, but I am absolutely convinced that with a new manager we will be able to achieve the objectives and goals we have set for the club.

“Ultimately results have to rest on the shoulders of the manager and as Roy has frequently said himself, the table doesn’t lie.

The chief executive, who dismissed claims that the club was in a mess, says Town are still looking upwards despite their current position of 19th: “We have taken the decision to terminate his contract now halfway through the season, we now have a real and meaningful opportunity to improve our position up the Championship table.

“Whilst we recognise we are only three points off the relegation zone, we are looking up towards the play-off zone and not down."

Unfortunately, Cleggy and our disinterested owner are still here !!!! But since they are, they HAVE to make the right appointment this time.

Hodgson would be a fantastic appointment. Did a brilliant job at a similar sized club to us in Fulham.

No way will it be Hodgson. They already have their man and with Hodg still at Liverpool (albeit maybe only for a couple of hours), it wont be him. If he had've been sacked a week ago I might have thought so.

I ask this question only because Clegg said they are still processing applicants....so if RH is about to be sacked he could in theory still be interviewed and given the job !

Would like Hodgson, However still the manager of Liverpool and the way Clegg is talking a manager will be in place by the Arsenal game, so I cant see taking over as his contrct would be hard to sort out in two or three days.

why are there so many silly names being banded around - it will either be Jewell (bookies have stopped taking bets on him) or Hughton, outside bets would be Curbishley or John Duncan :)

It is a massive relief that Keane has gone. The club gave him a lot of time to get it right, as most clubs would have sacked him in October 2009 (after the awful start to the season), January 2010 (when we were in the bottom three) or December 2010 (after six straight league defeats). I am sure Keane tried his best, but he did not have the attributes, experience or playing style we want and need.

As to his replacement, please not Megson as his playing style is similar to Keanes and there are Norwich links many fans will not forgive. I don't mind Jewell as he has four promotions on his CV I believe, and there are some other good names in there.

As there are interviews this weekend it suggests an unemployed manager.

Big question: what funds will the new man be given to spent? Did Evans hold back the money this year because he did not trust Keane to spend it, or because he does not want to invest so much in Ipswich?

I am not going to speculate;but a lot of money must have been coming in on Paul Jewell for Paddy Power to stop taking bets on him.We must be careful who we wish for,but at least it looks as though more consideration is being given to the subject than last time.
Some of the more principled managers would not be prepared to negotiate whilst RK was in post unlike last time when it was obvious that he wasnt bothered.
I am sure we would all wish to see a Manager who likes to play the game to entertain, which didnt seem to bother last incumbent!
I think Ipswich fans have been very tolerant and deserve better fare than has been dished up during Roys reign.
The club would seem to be very slow to act on a number of matters, especially transfers and the Chief Executive must take some responsibilty for this.He couldn't even start the press conference on time but I expect that this is because we now have a remote Chairman/Owner/Organ Grinder!!!

I have no trust in them (Clegg/Evans) to appoint the right man - you can guess they are including the likes of Gary Megson in their thoughts.
We need a manager who wants to play football in the Ipswich way, who can use attack minded full backs, allow the midfield to join up with the attack and actually provide the forwards with some form of service.
A manager who can source and sign players from lower levels or aboard to complement the bigger signings that we have been promised, this has provided Town with our more recent success. No more under achieving millionaire players from the Prem League on loan please, they dont need it or want it.
Build for the mid to long term. This is our club, a family club, a club that takes pride in the style of play and the way we operate as a business.

Hodgson is an old mate of Marcus. I still think it could be him.

Let's hope this is not another let down for us fans, we need an experienced proven manager not Paul jewell. I can't believe that sky sports news would put out that he was going to be appointed if they did not have decent info. Not who I would prefer, but will still back him if he does become our new manager.

Poyet please
Has tarcicco link so will be given some time by the doom mongers at portman rd
Plays football
Must know the lower leagues well so can pick up some bargains
Seems to be an excellent Manager- did well at leeds as number 2- they went down hill quickly after he left, Brighton doing well.
Probably got some realtionships in prem league to get some loans in

Otherwise- O'Driscoll, Hoddle, Ince

Hodgson is a joker, boring person, boring football, bad hair.
Jewell- terrible knitwear collecton rules him out
Megson- good god

best wishes RK. The man for the job needs loads off experince and good contacts. He needs to play attactive passing football. The new man will need to clear out RK deadwood and start rebuild. Lets not rush it and us fans must back whoever. Last thought Lambert from norwich sort us out and budgies start their annual freefall !!!!!!!!!!

Speculation is pointless.

The new man is known, they are just waiting a respectful 48 hours just as theid did after sacking Magilton.

If this was a knee-jerk sacking it would have happened Monday. It's today because they have his replecement ready.

Shame you are all complaining about the maybe's already.

Could we perhap be grown ups, wait, see & support.

Well, it has to be positive that keane has gone, and he seems to have been in danger of causing us more damage, the longer he stayed. So i think that pretty much anyone will be an improvement.
The main problem for the new man will be to undo the damage that keane has caused, which will take some time. 2 years wasted.

Curbs and Holland would be dream ticket but if it's a high profile he's looking for it might be Glenn Hoddle who has God on his side and proper footballers in his side.
