Jewell Delighted With Hammering
Jewell Delighted With Hammering
Tuesday, 15th Feb 2011 22:56

Town boss Paul Jewell was unsurprisingly delighted with his side’s 6-0 thrashing of Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium. Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll’s post-match comment was over somewhat quicker than usual.

Jewell said: “It’s a great night when you win away from home, any win away from home is a great result and winning by six doesn’t happen too often.

“It’s great for us to do it and a big thanks to the fans that came down on a horrible Tuesday night. Travelling all this distance to watch us was great.”

The Blues boss admitted that he felt for his opposite number: “I feel a bit sorry for Sean now that the game is over because with the injuries they had it was tough for him, but let’s not take anything away from our lads, we took all our chances.

“I’ve been beaten 6-0 at home before, so I know how it feels. I don’t think I’ve won 6-0 away from home as a manager before.”

The Town boss thought everything went his team’s way: “It was one of those nights. To win 6-0 everything’s got to go right, our goalie has made two very good saves at the end.

“Doncaster are a very, very good team depleted by injuries. For the first 20 minutes they edged it and once we scored you could see the confidence ebb away from them and flow through us.

“We had to get through periods in the game where we got a bit sloppy at times and it looks like we’ve won at a canter but that probably doesn’t reflect the whole game. But I’m delighted we’ve won.”

Jewell was pleased for Connor Wickham, who claimed his first senior hat-trick: “I said to him at half-time, go out and get another goal and he said ‘I think I’ll get two more’, and he’s been proved right.

“Obviously, he’s going to get the headlines, but it’s not just a team effort, it’s a squad effort. That’s what we’re trying to build here, every one of the squad is important.”

The Town manager was similarly pleased for Colin Healy, who came into the side for injured skipper David Norris and netted his first strike for the club: “The second goal was a terrific goal and you saw the effort and the workrate that Colin’s put in today - that’s why I said the squad is important.

“It’s a team and squad effort that we’re trying to promote here but within that there will be individuals who get headlines. But we win as one and we lose as one.”

There was more good news for Jewell regarding Norris: “We had the scan yesterday and it was as good as could have expected — he may be out for between 10 and 14 days. That’s the initial prognosis. We were a little concerned but hopefully it’s just a tweak of the ankle and the knee ligaments.”

Asked about linked Aston Villa right-back Habib Beye, Jewell reiterated that he’s looking to add to his squad without making specific reference to the 33-year-old full-back: “We’re trying to improve the squad, that’s what I would say. We’ve been in Doncaster since yesterday but we are trying to improve the squad.

“We’ve won 6-0 tonight, it’s a great feeling but we know there’s a lot of work to do and the squad needs help and needs to improve.”

Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll’s post-match press conference lasted only 30 seconds. The famously taciturn Midlander sat down and said: “First stupid question then, come on.”

A reporter responded: “Scoreline unfair on you?”

O’Driscoll agreed with him, “Definitely”, and then was asked: “How disappointed are you, Sean?”

The 53-year-old snapped back: “That’s a stupid question, how disappointed I am. I’m that disappointed [holding out his arms].”

“Come on, ask me something I can answer. No? See you.”

And with that he left.

Stunned and delighted! O'Driscoll sounds grumpier than Keane on his worst days!

What a fantastic result, and a great clean sheet too.

Thought O'Driscoll was a bigger man than that; I know he's just been thrashed, but he could be slightly more gracious!

On another note I saw Roy keane out yesterday walking his dogs. Man he looks rough with that beard. At least he still said hello. Wonder what he's thinking now!

I love Sean O'Discoll to go to a press conference and say “First stupid question then, come on.”

That is what we have missed under our two previous managers a sense of humour and PJ would have said the same if it was the other way round.

PJ you have taught my other half a leason all through my days of keane must go(not that many I supported him till december) She was nah you cant blame the manager its the players if that was true a new manager would not turn things round as quick or with such results it is early days she has admitted defeat lol

There are words in reports I have not heard for a long while like I am goin to score boss etc.. Ithink only now we are we finding out how depressed our players were and that is now changing to PMA we have turned the corner and yes would like the playoffs this year(still possible) BUT for the first time in years I am truly possitive

Credit to jewell, very respectful to Doncaster in his words, I just seen the goals, Bullard deserves so much credit, and what the highlights didn't show was him giving wickham the ball for his hat-trick! Fantastic team effort though, will do wonders for the confidence.

On a seperate note, souness on sky sports talking about gatusso absolutely brilliant! Gatusso = prick!!

P.s well done spurs, I got time for any team managed by Harry

I've made a screenshot of that scoreline in my mind before I hit the sack. ***6-0*** Ahhhh.

In fairness to Keane he wasn't one to make excuses in this kind of situation.

I am so proud to be an Ipswich fan tonite!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic team performance, fantastic for Connor, superb support, great effort in the pursuit of more goals till the very end. The team passed with composure, showed great movement and creativity, and Bullard's dead balls were exemplarary! The players and fans were having a REALLY good time! If we continue like this we will make the playoffs!!!!

To all those who said we were a mediocre side, and to MR KEANE who claimed we were never a going to be a team that scored 3 or 4 goals....... Onwards and upwards!!!! Martin- flop??, Healy-flop?? ....

We have one of the best squads in this league and finally a manager who knows what he's doing. If not playoffs this year auto promotion next! COYB!!!!!!!

Just amazing .... To think this is virtually the same squad and just look at the difference ! So much for that Keane mentality of 'resting' players and 'Oh, the youngsters cannot play too many games ' ...... Utter bollox !!

Well done the players (Sorry, squad !) Paul Jewell, and the coaching team , the fans etc etc ... I am so proud of our club this morning. How things can change eh !

Took my daughter to her first away game tonight, think I will have to take her more often after that! Fantastic result and performance, the effort was awesome, right to the final whistle, desperate to keep a clean shet with Fullop making a great save late on.....Well done Connor on his hattrick but as PJ said it was a huge team effort. Just one last thing....thought our fans were amazing, never stopped singing and the team responded....what a great night for everyone....onward and upwards.
