O'Driscoll: Town Bids Were Way Short Saturday, 21st May 2011 09:14
Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll says Town’s bids for striker Billy Sharp and midfielder James Coppinger last week were way short of his club's valuation of their players. Rovers turned down the Blues’ offers of £2.3 million for Sharp and £300,000 for 30-year-old Coppinger.
O’Driscoll said: “We don’t want to lose our best players. We know how important it is to have a goalscorer in this division - and we saw just how important Billy is to us when we were without him for the last 12 games and didn’t win once.
“Every player has their price but the bid was way short of Billy’s valuation. Copps is a slightly different case because of his age.
“But the bid has got to be realistic and it wasn’t a realistic bid for someone of James’s quality.”
Earlier this week, Wolves were linked with a £2.5 million offer for Sharp. Both players have two years remaining on their contracts at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Looks like they are going to sell if the price is right. Buy Coppinger for £500k-750k and as he was the one loading the bullets for Sharp, maybe he would follow. If not at least we have Norris replaced

losing all intrest now with players we are supposed to sign. Please i only want to hear about players we have actually signed not ones we have either missed out on or linked with.We all know we need a lot of new blood in the squad.Lets be realisic the likes of danny graham and billy sharp wont want to come to us lot when you consider that their respective teams arent much different to us lot in quality

Coppinger maybe but Sharp? 2.3 million. I think this is quite a realistic price tag and Wolves seem to agree! Darrent Bent went to Charlton for 2.5 million and yes the marketed has inflated in the last 5 or 6 years but you can't tell me Sharp is worth around the same amount as Darren Bent was back then surely Sean?

We were told that the aim was to bring in 5 or 6 new players and that we had a head start on other clubs. We obviously have to be patient. £2.5Mn for a striker, who gets goals in the Championship, does not seem much really when the prize is £40Mn+ on reaching the Premier League. Maybe players that are interesting other clubs play a waiting game to see what offers come in before deciding. We must be interesting to a potential new signing because of the ambition of ME behind us.

What's going on? 10 minutes have passed and we haven't been linked with anyone. I'll check again in another 10...

Why do Doncaster keep talking about our bids, which they say are unwelcome, when they are over a week old and we presumably haven't been back in touch about since?

£2.3M for Sharp was more than fair IMO. For once Clegg (or perhapsit was ME on this occasion?) got it completely right. However Coppinger is probably worth around £500k. 'We know how important it is to have a goalscorer in this division' - a great quote; sadly ITFC haven't realised this for SEVERAL seasons now. Hopefully this year we will sign a coupleof decent strikers and play them in a 4-4-2.

And also is everyone forgetting our 20 goal a season striker Connor Wickham? Wickham and Priskin up front in a 442 is fine for me ta - we need Bullard and a good DM

If we sign every player we have been linked to PJ will be able to play 11 different players every game ! Please only tell us if signings are made because this endless speculation is getting to the stage when people will lose all interest in club news !

Doncaster don't want to sell but if we went in with £4 million bet they would rip your hand off they are only doing the same as we are with Wickham, Wickham is never worth the money that is being quoted but if you really want him that's what you are going to have to pay

'they are only doing the same as we are with Wickham, Wickham is never worth the money that is being quoted but if you really want him that's what you are going to have to pay ' the reality is anything is 'worth' what someone will pay for it, we might not think Wickham is worth £15m, but someone might, look at Andy Caroll - is he 'worth' £35m..... yes, if you ask Liverpool, no if you ask anyone else...... you only need one muppet to think somethings worth an inflated value, and actually, it then does make it worth that, as someone will pay that for it! quite hilarious really....... its like ebay on steroids.......

sounds like a ' come on bid again then ' I think we should go in 2.6 mll for sharp and be done with it . if they dont accept that then there stupid .. QPR just id 2mill for Graham , hes scored 27 . he will go for around 2.5 mill so 2.6 for sharp is great deal foer Donny imo
DiamondGezzer added 14:22 - May 21
SouperJim :- Agree. Whilst I don't think we should go over the top for the pair of them, I think £3,000,000 for the pair is still sensible, but certainly max.
rosseden added 14:28 - May 21
'QPR just id 2mill for Graham , hes scored 27 . he will go for around 2.5 mill' i think hes more likely to be £3.5 or so......

Don't forget, people that Billy Sharp was at Sheff Utd before he went to Doncaster and couldn't hit a barn door - he might come here and do the same - Just like Priskin has done..

Funny how the comments appear to have changed from Doncaster over the last week or so. Ipswich bid £2.3M for Billy Sharp - gets rejected and Donny say they dont want to sell. Wolves bid £2.5M for Sharp - gets rejected and Donny say every player has a price and the bid was short of the mark. Good business work by Donny you have to say. I hope we put in another bid for him, but I wouldnt go above £3M to be honest. There are other strikers out there who would be worth a punt and Jewell would have identified some of them by now.

Also comments about Sharp not being good at Sheff Utd make me laugh. Alan Lee was rubbish at Cardiff before he came here. Jon Stead was rubbish everywhere he went before he came here. Sharp was awesome at Scunny before he moved to Sheff Utd and ok wasnt great but he has been good at Donny. Paul Jewell wasnt good at Derby was he but people still back him here so why not the same with Sharp? I agree it would be a risk - but isnt any transfer a risk? For example - Shevchenko (who was quality at the time) moving to Chelsea and he was a flop there. Everyone is entitled to their opinions though and I respect that.
