Wickham Again Not Involved as England Crash Out
Wickham Again Not Involved as England Crash Out
Sunday, 19th Jun 2011 21:41

Town striker Connor Wickham again wasn’t involved as England’s U21s crashed out of the UEFA European Championship in Denmark at the group stage after two late goals saw Stuart Pearce’s side to a 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic.

Wickham, who had previously been capped three times at U21 level, failed to play a single minute during the tournament.

such negative tactics from Pearce, reminded me of keane, played to make sure we didn't lose - didn't work and hope for the best

terrible decision to bring on rose

As a Norwegian I am happy mostly because he'll avoid injuries IF he had been involved.
But Im gutted that my 2. country went out :S

At least it was probably a good experience for him to be involved at that level and to be training with Premier players. He can now turn on the magic for us.

Doesn't bode too well for England though with this unadventurous style of play.

Just goes to show that Pearce is an awful manager

Tactically inept, and what was he thinking bringing on Rose instead of Connor o.O.

nothing to do with pearce or any other former engalnd managers at u21 level or senior level you lot need to wake up and realise that we as a nation are shiit and we have not got the players and perhaps desire! we are just a krap team!
plenty of international teams better than us

I feel sorry for Wickham - he went out there with high hopes of following last season's exploits with the U17s and all he got was a kicking from Phil Jones and 270 minutes on the bench.

Just hoping now that he comes home in one piece as quickly as possible and gets a bit of an opportunity to relax before what could well be a very busy season. Speaking as someone who is very much hoping that he stays at Portman Road, the one good thing that can be said is that we have more chance of keeping Wickham now that he has been kept out of the international spotlight.

Negative from Pearce!? The czechs were the ones who played one up front and five across the middle and got every man behind the ball. Not sure Pearce can be blamed for the inability to pick the lock in the middle of the park.

Thought we dominated the game, had plenty of possession but lacked a bit of composure and know how. Not sure Pearce is entirely to blame.

Pearce doesn't have the football brain to make tactical decisions..better coach than manager.

Poor effort..too many big time charlies looking like they'd rather be on their hols.

I was hoping welbeck was going to be taken off for Connor, maybe Pearce was told to play as many man u players as possible!!!! Good experience for Connor though!! knowing our luck he will be called up to the England u20 for the world cup starting end of July!!! And we lose him for a month!!!!

Hopefully this will have given CW a taste of what it's like to sit on the bench chomping at the bit to get on and being overlooked time and time again because its exactly what will happen to him at liverpool or spurs. In terms of development he's at the best place playing regular football. Stay here and get some games under your belt then leave a much better player next summer.

Im glad Connor didnt get a kick, that way if he stays he hasnt picked up an injury and is fresh for pre season, if we sell him again at least he hasnt picked up an injury and the deal will be done a.s.a.p and we move on and spend the cash we get for him.
As for the international debate we will never win anything while we try and play football which is alien to us, we arent cultured enough to play it out from the back slowly, and build it up slowly,if we played the game at premier league pace we'd be a much better side, taems wouldnt know what to do

Feel for the kid. But as a selfish supporter, game time could have given Connor more of a high profile and really given us very little chance of holding on to him for the upcoming season.

@ clive_baker - very shrewd observation. Here's hoping to a full season with CW

england senior squad and under 21 will never win anything untill we appoint a strong senior team manager, that will shake up the national squad. we have by far too many players in the senior squad that are picked because of past performances or sponsorship requests. we would be better off picking a team made up from championship players.

seems to me that only Prem players getting picked to actually play in U21s, therefore CW more likely to leave for a Prem club in order to play at international level rather than being a hanger on in them, which must be incredibly frustrating.

I fear this tournament showed everything that is wrong with english football at the moment, under the age of 21, just signed for best clubs in the country for £20mil on 5 year contracts probs for as much as 100k per week, where is the motivation? it wrongly gives them the impression that they have already made it. Chris Smalling aside they all just looked cocky and arrogant big time charlies that have just got way ahead of them selves. makes me think perhaps connor didnt fit in because the impression he gives me is the polar opposite of this, he seems to be very level headed and understands that he needs to nurture his talent and work at it, all this talk of him leaving I genuinely believe he will stay as he knows this will be best for him to improve as a player.

Good to see our fans really haven't got a clue when it comes to football.....the Czech's played the negative tactics right up until the last five minutes of the match...one nil up he brings on a more defensive minded player and is slammed for it....the Czech's get a ucky bounce for their first goal meaning England had to go all out and they caught us out as every one had pushed forward...

What is really laughable because that moron on TV hosting it even said it...every one thinks England should walk over team because we have the Premiership....("It's the best league in the world!") Stop believing the propaganda it is not the best league in the world it does not teach the ball playing skills we need to to progress in world football. The sooner people realize this then maybe something will be done to actually teach players how to pass a ball and not just hoof it forward hoping for the best...(end of rant)
