Old Boy Wright Training With the Blues
Old Boy Wright Training With the Blues
Friday, 8th Jul 2011 14:09

TWTD understands that former Town keeper Richard Wright is training with the Blues at Playford Road. The 33-year-old was released by Sheffield United at the end of the season and is currently looking for a new club.

Wright joined the Blades in September 2010, having been let go by Town at the end of the previous season, but made only two appearances while at Bramall Lane before a knee injury which required surgery ended his campaign early.

The one-time Arsenal, Everton and West Ham keeper’s presence at Playford Road alongside his mentor Malcolm Webster, who rejoined the Blues last week, is likely to lead to speculation that a third spell with Town might be in the offing, however, we understand that the ex-England international is only back at the club in order to get himself fit while he searches for a new team.

I seem to remember that Warky only trained with the blues to get himself fit and that lead to a succesful third spell with the club.

Wright is demanding too much for his signing on fee !!! He wants a nice pair of slippers and a hot water bottle !!!!

I have heard a rumour that Bobby Charlton fancies making a comeback for one more season to show the modern footballer how to kick a football properly i.e in a straight line/pass to own team mate/shoot on target. Has better knees than jimmy Bullard and wages won't be an issue for Clegg and Evans as he will not expect more than the £150 a week he earned when he last played. Worth a punt?

I can't help but laugh at stowtractorboy comment lol
why do these so called true blue fans of ITFC have the shortest of memoreys?
Richard Wright was king for us! He is still a better goalie than Marton and Aaron thats a fact.
Just embarrassing how in football you are quickly forgotten sign him PJ hes a ledge and at 33 he is still very young.

Wright is better than all of the keepers Keane wasted money on ,and only suffered a dip in form when publicly criticised by his manager the same as a number of players Mac,Delaney,Martin,Priskin etc

"didnt work out last time " i would say winning player of the year when we finished just outside playoffs would argue the point that it did ?

He is under 40 so we probably won't bother.

Solid keeper, gives his all for the club and would be a dependable second choice to Fulop.

Would be perfectly happy to see him come back but probably unlikely to happen.

At this rate TWTD gonna need a thesaurus, "old Boy", "veteran", "experianced", gonna to old git sooner or later!

Yes, in spite of the fact that he was a great keeper for ipswich and is still quite young for a keeper I think he is not the keeper he once was in the past. Was a mistake going to Arsenal all those years ago from a footballing point of view, has sat in reserves earning top money for years and it has affected his form which he struggles to get back.

I'd have him back, I too remember he was player of the season a few years back then a dip of form meant he was binned. Like many have said he's better than ALB and I'm sure would be cheap to employ. I'd also like to see loach or Westwood in as our number one but that would mean fulop moving on first. I think he'd be a good number 2.

He only played 2 games last season for a team that was relegated. Why do people want to sign him up he's useless. I'd rather get Supple back than Wright.

Very interesting.

If his compensation requirements are reasonable, Wrighty could be a valuable back-up and perhaps provide some competition for Fulop, Stay tuned.

Rafa if Wright is that good he would be playing regularly. On what current day facts do you conclude that Wright is better than Fulop ? For heavens sake Fulop may not be the best but he has played regular premiership football and is also a current international goalkeeper. Your comments just do not hold up I' afraid. The one thing I will concede is that Wright is better than ALB.

This seems a no-brainer. I suspect few clubs will risk signing him, so we could get him on a reasonably cheap deal. And, lets face it, he was no worse than Murphy and could easily do his job - and challenge for a first team place.

Slow tractorboy .. i think you will find that Wright has played more games in the premiership and the championship than Fulop .Fulop didnt make it at Spurs or Sunderland in the premier and was constantly loaned out .At present he isnt first choice for his country either who are very poor.
Certainly not a great deal between them definately not the £750000 we wasted on a transfer fee

People who are saying sign him up have lost the plot. Yes he was an excellent goalkeeper in his first spell over 10 years ago now but his second was far from successful. The defence had no confidence in him and nor did the fans. Anyway why speculate, as stated in the article this is just a matter of looking after a former player as he looks for a new club.

Yeah, most of us would love to see Wrighty back between the sticks but aren't we going a bit overboard on signing up the 30-somethings?

Bowyer,Ingimarsson & Bullard fine but Boateng?!!

algarvefan added 16:35 - Jul 8
What short memories you've got his last spell was not 'far from successful' he had a great first season and was our best player, then Keaneo arrived and he played behind a dreadful defense, which I think 'shot' his confidence. Let the experts at Town and Malcolm Webster have a look at Wrighty, he is Ipswich to his core and I think he's worth a punt on a 12 month contract initially. The club knows best, let them decide, could be a good deal on a freebie?

would be another greaqt signing and i would be proud to have an englisman and ipswich born aqnd bred player in our team! just as good as fulop maybe the competition between fulop, wright, barret is what they all need.
so all you negatives (nuff of ya out there) can phuk off! i am getting well excited about the season.

Surco I agree with transfer fee being overpriced. Current day however there is no comparison, with Fulop a far better option - only my opinion and I respect yours. Would still take Wrighty as number two but as others have stated he is only training with us at the moment.

Stowtractorboy form is Temporary CLASS is Permanent!
can't believe what I am reading serious its so poor Wrighty is a top keeper.
bitter fans he left for Arsenal get over it,I did'nt work out thats football.
But to say he's passed it? just baffles me football is all about opinions fair enough, but hey ho bet you were all signing his name when he saved that header from Histrov from point blank range to send us to the premiership
like i said short memorey's.

Wouldn't hesitate in having him back especially with Malcolm Webster coaching. Another poor decision by Keane and would make an excellent 2nd / 1st choice if he can stay fit even if initially on a monthly basis to give PJ a chance to check his form out.
