Town Closing in on Collins
Town Closing in on Collins
Friday, 9th Sep 2011 10:43

TWTD understands that Town are closing in on the loan signing of Stoke defender Danny Collins and that the deal could go through as soon as today. Football League clubs can now sign players on loan for up to 93 days.

The 31-year-old Wales international is due at Portman Road this morning and if all goes well the former Sunderland man could join the squad which has already left for Blackpool ahead of tomorrow's game.

Collins has been a Town target for some weeks with manager Paul Jewell keen to add to his central defensive ranks.

On Friday, Collins was left out of Stoke's 25-man Premier League squad with manager Tony Pulis keen that he and a number of other players should go out on loan to get games under their belts: "These are lads who have not been playing enough recently and so we want to get them out and playing football until Christmas. It's important for Danny Collins to be playing at his age and because he's in the Welsh squad.”

Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth have also shown interest in the 6ft tall one-time Chester City man, who plays either at centre-half or left-back.

thought Jewell wasn't expecting any new players - or has this progressed quicker than expected?

well done PJ, getting some quality in now. All of a sudden this team is looking very very strong, wouldn't swap our team for many other teams in this league. Maybe another winger on loan, someone with pace, preferably someone like Townsend to compete with the likes of Carson, Martin, Murphy and JET.

Just give it time ITFC. This team is going places.

Don't get too over excited..you'll soon find out that he's no better than Delaney.

Collins we have you surrounded. Resistance is futile.

But 93 days from now takes us I think to mid December. Would that mean he would have to go back to Stoke and we would have to wait to the transfer window reopens in January to make any further move

Get in, great news if it comes off.

If VIC, who slagged my comment off the other day wants to apologise, please do.

Collins and Sonko would be pretty solid partnership at the back. I think we have an incredibly strong squad now, just a right back please PJ and we r sorted.

This is the most exciting team weve had in years, probably since Stewart holland et al in 2000.

Pj can obviously see how much we've needed to improve in every area and it's refreshing to see our manager actually getting in the Market and doing some really good business.

Hopefully a couple of the loan signings will be made permanent, but I think we have a really nice balanced side if we get Collins, we do need a rb which would allow Edwards to compete with jet and or Martin down the right wing.

For the first time in a few years I think we have a chance of competing for play off places, but if that doesn't happen this year then at least we have moved forward and are getting stronger.

Isn't he on £25k a week?

Don't need him, we've got Sonko and Delaney! If this is a 3 year plan all our players will be 40 by the end of it!

I'd be interested to see where our wage bill sits in comparison to other Championship clubs if Collins comes in. It must be near the top now.

Let's hope they gel quickly and win points. Now is the time for that. Evans won't have deep pockets forever.

That said, COME ON YOU BLUES!

I fear it might leave us short come the tail end of december but we are desperate now so get him in.
Any news on a right back, I don't recall us being linked with hardly anyone and PJ doesn't appear to have acknowleged this as a shortfall. Edwards certainly doesn't seem to be up to the job - David Wrght anyone?

Couldn't we just have picked him up in Stoke on the way through?

Don't get too excited. He will just be a loan player. He will have to go back to Stoke before Christmas. This, if it actually happens, is just a short term solution. The long term problem will stil need to be addressed

Struna for right back. I don't buy into 'you can't tell if someone is a good player by four minutes on YouTube', I disagree. So let's get on the phone! ;)

Sneaky from Jewell here regarding Collins; 'No more signings before Blackpool'...a day later: 'Town closing in on Collins'.

Sonko, Delaney, Ingimarsson, Collins; I like to think that looks pretty solid for starting and backup centre backs. Let's not forget, for all Delaney's shortcomings so far this season, we have seen last season, against Bristol this season and briefly against Leeds that when you put him next to an experienced head he can perform. Should maybe work on distribution though.

pazelle - Delaney has been found out for the spineless "linchpin" that he is, and whilst watching Town the last 2 years think it is fair to say that he has fallen to pieces whenever he hasn't had MacAuley's hands to hold.

Danny Collins, on the other hand, together with the fellow promotion winning/ premiership competing experience of Sonko, is a great move. We are talking about 2 very imposing players in the centre of our defence, with a proven pedigree and know how as to what is required to succeed in the Championship. Delaney has never truly achieved anything in the Championship, and I see few signs that he ever will. Plus, the age debate about Danny Collins joining and our players all being 40 or over..Danny Collins is 31, Damien Delaney is 30, our oldest player is Mark Kennedy who is 35. Just thought that one needed clearing up too.
