New Scouts Targeting Youth and Pace
New Scouts Targeting Youth and Pace
Thursday, 10th Nov 2011 10:20

Town boss Paul Jewell has charged new scouts Andy King and Mark Seagraves with adding youth and pace to his squad. The duo signed on as full-time scouts last week, joining chief scout Steve McCall and David Hamilton in the search for new talent.

Jewell said: "We've got four full-time scouts at the minute with Andy and Mark joining us.

"I think that recruitment is key and we've got to spread our net far and wide, both home and abroad.

"There is nothing wrong with experienced players, but we've also got to have some exuberance, some youth and some power coming through into the squad as well, so we need to have that mix.

"That's the remit really, we've got certain targets in mind and the game, especially at this level, is getting quicker and one thing we lack in our squad is genuine pace."

Thank the Lord!

Good, get on with it...although what about some of the youth already at the club?

So we have 2 scouts looking for youth and pace - what do the other 2 look for ?
Players that are over 30, slow and injury prone !!!

I thought we already had some youth and pace in the squad but PJ refuses to play them !

How many inept performances before the crowd vent their frustrations ?

Dimwit thinks we need youth and pace - when did this dawn on him? Given the amount of players he has already brought in, its a bit of a joke for Dimwit to be referring to a lack of a necessary ingredient at this stage. He's made us an old team. He relied on ancients. If he wastes more wages on Andrews in January, he'll have Andrews, Bowyer and Bullard competing (with others) for a place in midfield. 100 years between them. Where is the room for pace and youth in there?

What most of you clowns don't realise is it takes time to bring good young prospects into the club. When Jewell came in our squad was a mess, so he has drafted in the only kind of players with any real quality you can get on short notice; those that have been around the block a bit, are on their way down or have baggage attached. At the same time he has still managed to show, with the likes of Cresswell and JET, that he wants good young talent in the building and ultimately that's what we are aiming for.

So why don't you all get off his back and get behind the team for a change? Any idiot can whinge on with the same old criticism week in week out. Proper fans however can look beyond their end of their nose occasionally.

I swear PJ must read these posts, and just comes out with a statement that tries to appease.

I'm not even convinced that wholesale changes to the squad are the answer, we've already got a decent squad (yes, it could always improve), it's more about getting the best out of what we've got either through motivation or tactics and position. All of which are under PJs remit.

I like what PJ is doing with the scouting.

Shane O Connor, Carson and Murray are pacy players with good ability. JET is no slouch either but is a lazy lad and lacks the enthueasim of the other lads.

Its hard at this level to get the best youth players as all clubs are looking at the same guys. It may be that we will have to recruit the schools athletics sprint team and teach them to play football. If I remember Walcott had pace but couldnt really play football until Wenger got his hands on him. Remember how much Arsenal paid for his raw pace?? Alot.
On the continent Technique is probably more important than pace so I would think a good few of the potential recruits could be from outside UK.

Souper - spot on . Many people are not happy unless they are moaning . By all means get hacked off on a Saturday night ( or maybe Sunday) but come Monday MOVE ON !!! We have supporters who live in the X Factor generation of instant fame success followers - He has not been in the job a year yet - Youth and Pace - Murray , Carson , JET - when he gets out of first gear , The future is bright and gonna get brighter .

WaltwnBlueNaze You have hit the nail smack on the head. We already have very good players in the Academy,But this management would not and will not use them? They chose to get in more experienced players who are way past their best, Overrated and down right crap? For next to nothing. This was to try and gatecrash the club to try and get promotion this year,Then would have to get rid of most of the players. And start rebuilding. But this is not going to work? So they will carry on with the forlorn hope that Miracle's do happen? God help the Academy youth players. Maybe the new rules on Academy's that has just been past will take care of this situation,Maybe not to Ipswich's benefit ?

Pace & youth eh !, unlike the ones we have at the moment that need pacemakers & have a long lost youth, the club has been set back years imo

Exactly right SouperJim. Bringing in the young players we want means we can't have a team full of them all at the same time - we need some players with experience too and the squad was totally bereft of them when PJ took over. For goodness sake give the bloke and his new scouts a bit of time to get it right.

Who are these quality Academy and young players we already have? Carson is the only young player we have brought through recently that you could argue might be worth a place in the side (Wickham ecluded ofc).
We hardly have a decent record of bringing quality youth through in recent times, and the crowd at PR have absolutely no patience with allowing them to develop within the side anyway.
Wait until Cresswell hits a rough patch, watch them get on his back then.

Comments on this board frustrate me.

I guess there are a lot of professional managers on here who know exactly how to turn the team around.

I'd lay my house on the line, that 99% of the naysayers would have Ipswich relegated in their first season if they were put in charge, yet they seem to know the answer to everything.

By all means, have an opinion, but those of you who think you know it all, seriously?

8 games and we were on a roll, nobody was moaning then, 3 poor performances, and everyone's on the bandwagon again.

I didn't realise it was half term.

'Crap' Ipswich Squad 6-0 Doncaster
Jewell's Ipswich squad 0-3 Doncaster after 15 minutes.

Martin and Carson HAVE to start the next game, and one of the 'proven old pros' will have to be dropped. But with Jewell in charge, anythings impossible!

Get over to Holland again then PJ and check out the talent here my friend. There is youth and pace in abundence but more than that of course they have technical skills on a par with the best footballers in the World and they often come at affordable prices too. Your men were supposed to be checking out Everton and Overtoom from Heracles but I heard there were no enquiries made. So much for our Eurpopean scouting policy. I suspect that Steve McCall does most of his scouting in the local bars judging by his success rate!

I love how the players on short term deals who are young are exempt from any discussion about the age of the squad, but the players who are young and on short-term deals form the basis of the argument.

Ingimarsson, Sonko, Andrews and Collins are over 30s on short deals (i.e. not currently part of a long term plan), but we also have Stockdale, Wabara and Murphy on short term deals (again, not part of a long term plan).

We have signed Bullard and Bowyer on long term deals who are over 30.
We have also signed JET, Cresswell, Ellington and Chopra who are under 30.

So, out of Jewells 13 signings since the summer, only six of them are currently part of a long term strategy (i.e. beyond this season) and of those six, 4 of them are under 30 (in fact their average age has to be about 25).

Even if we sign Collins and Andrews in january (and neither are done deals), then that makes 4 over 30 and 4 under 30. Its hard to see there is a strategy that clearly has been aimed towards making an older team.

Whats more evident is that there has been a strategy towards bringing in experienced players on short term contracts to steady the ship, whilst the go out and look for younger players for the future (which Jewell has acknowledged).

why go looking for something that you already have? give the youth you have a chance....why would you give them contracts and restrict them to reserve team football

Is that relative youth and pace? Perhaps thats a 30 year old with Jim's pace?

So our new scouts will be looking for the same qualities as every other scout at every other club!....dont think this is going to get us anywhere until we can get back the excellent reputation our youth system used to have......until then talented youngsters are going to be swayed by better teams ...how do we attract them again? we need to be at least competing at the top end of the championship first! we havent been able to do that for over five seasons! ..we have to be an attractive proposition for young players..sadly at the moment we are not (cresswell aside!)
