Reading Keeper to Sign Three-Month Deal by Wednesday
Reading Keeper to Sign Three-Month Deal by Wednesday
Sunday, 8th Jan 2012 20:20

Reading keeper Alex McCarthy will join the Blues on a three-month loan in time to make his debut at Birmingham on Wednesday, TWTD understands. Contrary to earlier reports, the deal is not yet done but it appears that only formalities are left to be completed.

McCarthy confirmed his move on Twitter, also commenting on the quality of the accommodation Town had put him in: "Hotel is decent, better than what I thought, time for sleep now. Night tweeps!

"[...]finished loan at Leeds last week. At Ipswich now!"

Manager Paul Jewell has previously said that the Blues are keen on signing an additional glovesman to compete with Arran Lee-Barrett and Richard Wright, former loanee David Stockdale having been recalled by Fulham last month.

Guildford-born 6ft 4in-tall England U21 cap McCarthy came through the Royals’ youth system and has had prior loan spells at Woking, Cambridge United, Team Bath, Aldershot Town, Yeovil Town and Brentford in addition to a six-game spell at Leeds in November and December last year.

Meanwhile, Neil Warnock’s sacking by QPR has already led to speculation that the former Sheffield United boss may be the man to succeed Paul Jewell at Town if and when owner Marcus Evans decides on making a change.

Warnock, who was linked with the Blues after Jim Magilton’s exit, knows Evans and had praise for the club when speaking after Town’s defeat at Loftus Road in February: “The club’s very stable, there are good people behind [Paul], Marcus is a good person to work for.

“And the fans down there, bloody hell, they’re second to none, aren’t they? It’s a great opportunity for everybody down there.”

Forget the goalkeeper (no offence Alex). The most important gossip is that of Neil Warnock. Please, please, please make it happen Mr Evans!

We are just improving other clubs younger players and neglecting our own. If cody cropper was at Liverpool etc and available pj would probably sign him and play him.

....am I the only one thats really confused by this why re-sign RW as what will now be a third choice goalie???.....can we throw money at wages we can ill afford??.....and impact on ALB.....I'd seriously be thinking about telling the club to sling their hook...and if he is that good why arent Reading playing him......please dont tell me he will have a re-call clause!!!!.....and after 3 months???...cant sign him as it will be out of the transfer window........think I'll stick to fantasy footie and not getting this at all

WHY O WHY.... this is madness, a keeper on a 3 month loan, so come early April we'll be back to square one, needing to find another keeper...... why can't we just sign one permanently!!!! BUILDING A TEAM AROUND LOAN PLAYERS JUST DOES'NT WORK......

Warnock plz.

No chance of a permanent deal because Reading rate him highly (I imagine he'll soon oust Federici from the number 1 spot, just needs more experience first). So the loan move is pointless for us.
Neil Warnock in to sort it out please. Sounds like he's someone ME would listen to and respect what he has to say.

Warnock would breathe a new lease of life in ITFC and we would definitely avoid relegation which is the concern with the Jewell clowns!!
Warnock (unlike) Jewell can manage people brilliantly and like him or not when have you heard him criticise his players after a game.(Unlike Jewell).

Warnock could atract players, Warnock would know the players to bring in and I am sure Warnock could organise the team. He could bring Sean Derry with him.
The thing I am pretty certain Jewell will not do is organise the team and I am not hopeful that he will bring in the right players.

I know we are probably want an up and coming manager but the job facing any new man is large - disaster of a team, relegation looming, team of old experienced un-motivated players, players contracts running out etc etc. A safe pair of hands would probably be wise

Not sure Warnocks presence would turn around the season ticket sales decline

Brilliant. Regardless of whether he proves to be a top keeper or not we'll have to re-organise the Team at the beginning of April regardless - just in time for some choice 6-pointers no doubt!

This deal has Simon Clegg written all over it! The phrase Brewery and P*!! up springs to mind!

Anyhow - Good Luck Alex and welcome to Ipswich.

So it is only a 3 month loan deal? Are we so short-termist that we couldn't make it to the end of the season?

As for Warnock, good manager but rather than spend £1M-odd paying off Jewell and all his staff, then appointing Warnock and all his staff, would we not be better giving Jewell the money to buy a £1M centre back? Is there a lot of point appointing Warnock if he has to trade on loans and free transfers, and when the club will not sort out the contracts of key assets? My worry is that our problems go a lot deeper than the manager, and changing him won't solve this.

Got to say that I dont really like pullis, Lambert, McCarthy, allardyce but they are all managers who you wouldn't say no to.

As fans we wouldn't have chosen jewell and he has taken us into a sorry state. You can't compare football now to when sir bobby took over and we were still in div 1. As ray Wilkins said on sky tonight its a results business. 2 wins in last 13 is not good enough.

Have been going to PR since 1980 and this is the most worried I have been. Protested against John Duncan and would do the same against jewell. If enough fans are that pd off we need to make our voices heard.

If people seriously want jewell to stay we are in trouble. Season ticket sales will go below 10k that's for sure.

Either Evans doesn't trust Jewell with some real money and is just giving him a couple more games in case he needs to bring a new manager in before window closes and allow him some money or there just isn't any to spend as this relying on loans is getting stupid.

Apparently the Mayan calendar predicts that ITFC's season will be finished by the beginning of April so it wasn't worth signing him for longer!

And QPR have sack Warnock because QPR are crap and struggling

Jewell got Bradford and Wigan up so why is he different to Warnock

Warnock will not be able to bring in the players to get town up and keep them in the prem

A 3 month loan deal rather than bringing in a keeper for the longer term. This suggests to me Evans/Clegg have lost faith in Jewell.
