Wright on Trial With MLS Side Dallas FC
Wright on Trial With MLS Side Dallas FC
Saturday, 21st Jan 2012 22:40

Town keeper Richard Wright flew to the US today ahead of a trial with MLS side Dallas FC this week. However, after Alex McCarthy was sent off at Leeds, the Blues look certain to make sure the 34-year-old is back in Suffolk well ahead of the home game against his old club West Ham a week on Tuesday, with Arran Lee-Barrett currently the club’s only available senior keeper.

Wright signed a short-term contract to the end of the season in November just before the loan deadline, having trained with his old club since the summer after his release by Sheffield United.

The former England man came in as cover for David Stockdale, then on loan from Fulham, who had picked up a shoulder injury, Wright playing the only game of his third spell with the Blues in the home defeat to Reading.

Once at Arsenal and Everton, local boy Wright is believed to be keen to move to play first team football and we understand his Blues contract includes a clause allowing his release if he is offered the chance to play more regularly elsewhere. Town seem likely to look for another keeper as back-up if Wright wins a deal at Dallas.

However, as things stand, with youngster Cody Cropper still out with a knee injury and McCarthy set to be suspended for one match after his dismissal today, Wright will be required for bench duty against the Hammers.

For F**k sake!!
What's the point of signing a 3rd choice keeper if you're going to allow him to fly to the other side of the world to trial for someone else when he is contracted here!?
Where's the logic?

This club is a farce!!

I mentioned this on the forum.
Wrights had enough at PR. Who can blame him? He wants out and would like to finish his career abroad.
Do we really want to keep a player who is desperate to leave? (and he is)

We really are in a mess with our goalkeepers, and have been since Richard Wright was dropped in 2009. Begovic recalled from loan after about a month, Lee-Barrett a cheap backup but not good enough, Murphy OK but nothing more and chose to leave, Fulop a massively overpaid flapper who cost a fortune, Stockdale decent but recalled from loan after a few months, Wright back but badly out of touch, then McCarthy on a short-term loan who has made the worse possible start. Dear oh dear. Please can we just sign a proper, decent, permanent goalkeeper? We need some stability!!

I don't blame Wright for wishing to leave. I hope he gets a deal out there and makes a great life for himself. I feel very sorry for the way things turned out for someone who was linked with and played for some of the very best clubs in world football and remains my favourite ever Town player.

Pity we can't find a more settled team and bench selection, which in my view should include Wright on the bench every week!

What is going on? No other club would allow one of its senior players to go on trial unless they weren't going to keep him. We need him her, things get worse by the day. No doubt we'll be reading a story next week about Wright having his contract terminated by mutual consent.

@bobble How many "Yanks" are playing in the English top flight these days? Ask Fulham, Everton or Villa supporters what they think of american players?

As for this move, it's silly. There's no way he takes the starting spot in goal from Kevin Hartman. Seriously, we do seem to produce our share of quality keepers over here...and Hartman is a class veteran keeper who was only kept out of the national team cuz he was behind Keller, Friedel & Howard.

Some of Paul Jewell's signings are shocking, why sign a player if you don't have faith in him. Like Wabara, what was the point of him being here. It's not good having such a big turnover of players.

I don't blame Wrighty at all, he signed to challenge ALB for a spot in the first team and has been relegated to third choice, when in my opinion his experience and command of a back 4 make him first choice. Wrighty never has been perfect but he loves the club and will always give his best, he is the right age, most goalkeepers are on top form at his age and like the team just needs a bit of confidence.
I thought after Roy Keane that Paul Jewell would provide the right spirit and gel the team, I was hopelessly wrong, if we are to stay in the Championship, he must go and go by Monday. If he had any dignity he would walk away!!!!!!

So why did you sign him Jewell? Complete and utter shambles. I read an article where McCarthy was saying how much he loved his time at Leeds and would love to go back there.. Well mate you got them three points yesterday for sure.

You couldn't make it up , another example of clueless management from Jewell and Clegg. What next from the clueless duo? I'm affraid it's league one football at Portman Road next season unless Evans acts immediately
