Edwards Players' Player of the Year
Edwards Players' Player of the Year
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2012 23:14

Skipper Carlos Edwards was named the Town Player’s Player of the Year at this evening’s End of Season Dinner at Milsoms in Kesgrave. The 33-year-old finished second behind Aaron Cresswell in the Supporters Club award which was announced at the weekend.

Edwards told the club site he was delighted to win: "It's an honour to win this award and it's an honour to captain this club.

"Hopefully it can carry on into next season and I'd love to keep the armband."

Andy Drury won the John Kerridge Memorial Trophy for the club’s most improved player, while Icelandic midfielder or defender Gunnar Thorsteinsson, who won the Dale Roberts Trophy for the Academy Player of the Year at the weekend, picked up the Harold Smith Trophy for the Academy's most improved player.

Lee Martin won the Corporate Customers, Sponsors and Boxholders' Player of the Season, while the Town Goal of the Season was Jason Scotland’s 25-yard equaliser at Crystal Palace earlier this month.

In other awards, former Blue Tom Eastman has won two Young Player of the Year gongs at Colchester, including the official title and on the U'sual website, and also the the Away Fans' Player of the Year. Eastman turned down a six-month deal at Town to join the League One side last summer.

Meanwhile, Tommy Smith’s New Zealand have drawn Brazil, Egypt and Belarus in their group at this summer’s Olympics. Smith is expected to be named in the Oly Whites squad for the tournament which is played at U23 level plus three overage players, one of whom will be skipper Ryan Nelsen.

Elsewhere, Academy schoolboy Cemal Ramadan netted as the Republic of Ireland’s U15s beat Austria 2-1 in the first of two away friendlies this afternoon. Ramadan, who played in the recent U15s match against Manchester United, will join Town’s Academy full-time in the summer of 2013.

I have a feeling that the goal of the season trophy will have 3 names on it every year from now on as long as those names stay at the club and those 3 names are Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

For me the goal of the season was Lee Martin's at St.Andrews....

I was lucky enough to see the Jason goal when I was at selhurst, great goal from a lovely player!

Shame the fans didn't vote for Carlos he has been superb this season doing a good job playing out of his favoured/best position and taking on the Captains armband when everyone else was falling apart. Aaron Cresswell has done well but it was his first season and I would like to see him do it again over 2 or 3 years. Sadly I don't think he will be with us that long if he does it again in 2012/13 bigger clubs will come calling.

Lee Martin at Brum and Andy Drury's absolute howitzer were better despite Scotland's being a great strike!

Haha. Dreadful positional sense, switch back to natural position on the right of midfield for next season. Right back is a position where Ipswich must improve next season.

Player of the year for someone playing out of position and trying hard ,says it all for me and how limited the choices for player of the year are again .
Must buy a right back has cost us since Wright was sold

I would have voted for Edwards, he's had a good season (defensive woes aside) and been a much better captain than Leadbitter.

As for Eastman, I think we might have been hasty in letting him go as he was forced to play at right-back at such an early age when he's a centre back, one of the maddest things Keane did. Eastman was awful there, but he is so young and may yet be a decent-ish centre back.

Good achievement and one over the moaners who criticised Carlos at RB, a position he's not unfamiliar with, but as a natural attacking player he's really picked up his defending too.
Well done Carlos, although I would like to see a new (natuarl) RB brought to the club in the summer, if only because having just the one RB is not good, if Carlos gets injured who plays there?

I'd rather see Carlos playing in midfield next season, on the odd occasion where he's gone forward this season he's looked decent.

buryblue .. a lot of people arent moaning about Carlos ,they are merely pointing out he is not a right back and has proved costly in a number of games and there are a number of defenders who could do a better job playing .
How can people say he is our player of the year but criticise Jewell because he has not bought a right back ,and that is one of the priority signings this summer ,it contradicts itself completely ?
His defending positionally is still very poor even after a year and a half of playing there ,as again proved last Saturday .I am not an Edwards knocker and think he was one of Keanes better signings and has lifted us since being club captain and would like him to continue doing so but as an attacking midfielder only .

Well deserved. He obviously has the respect of his peers, and , should we sign a new RB and he does not start every game, I think he should be made Club captain.

No doubt in my mind Cresswell was our player of the season, but i guess when Edwards got the armband is when our form picked up so well done Carlos! (still need a new right back)

Except Keane didn't release Eastman did he? He left because Jewell only offered him a short-term deal

Very well deserved. Carlos was our most creative player this season. Now play him in midfield where he will do even better.

I find it quite bizarre that despite having one of the worst defensive records in the league, 2 defenders with player of the years awards

Yadda, Yadda, Yadda..I am surprised the players even bothered to look up from their mobile phones to vote for him..they certainly didn't on the night..
