Jewell: Ellington and Peters Can Move On
Jewell: Ellington and Peters Can Move On
Tuesday, 1st May 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell says it might be best if striker Nathan Ellington and midfielder or full-back Jaime Peters move on during the close season. The duo have a year remaining on their current deals but played little part during 2011/12.

Ellington, who last week said that he might favour a move to play more regular football, made only three starts — just one in the league — and 14 sub appearances without scoring after signing on a free transfer from Watford last summer.

Jewell admits that the 30-year-old, who was a key member of his promotion-winning Wigan side, has failed to make much of an impression at Portman Road: “He’s been disappointing Duke, there’s no two ways about it.

“I see him every day in training and I saw a piece where he said he hadn’t had a chance, but what he does in training, or what he doesn’t do, or what other people do in training can highly influence my decision on a Saturday.

“He hasn’t had a run in the team, there’s no doubt about that, but since he left Wigan he hasn’t really had a run in anyone’s team. Maybe he’s one that might have to leave in the summer.

“If Duke wants to move, he can, it’s not a problem. I know Nathan from Wigan and if he looks at himself - and I don’t want this to be a slagging match because it isn’t - he hasn’t done it since he left Wigan.

“Watford, I took him to Derby, he played in a pretty average environment there in fairness to him. Then he went to Greece, then he went to Preston. This was a great opportunity for him and he’s a great lad, but he just hasn’t done it.”

But the Town manager isn’t entirely ruling out Ellington getting back to his best and while he’s still at Portman Road says he’ll remain in contention: “He’s got a year to go on his contract and you never say never. As long someone’s here and working hard, I’ve always got time for them, but sometimes it might be better for someone to move on.”

As for Peters, Town’s longest-serving player having initially impressed in a trial in 2004, Jewell admits that the 24-year-old, whose only appearance for the Blues in 2011/12 came in the Carling Cup loss to Northampton, hasn’t had too many opportunities since he took over at Portman Road in January last year.

The Canadian international spent time on loan in League One towards the end of last year where the Blues boss says he failed to impress: “Jaime went to Bournemouth and Bournemouth didn’t want to keep him. I think it’s about time Jaime moved on as well.

“I know he’s a bit of a fans’ favourite and everything else and he hasn’t had a look-in for me, but where would I play him? Carlos has done exceptionally well, Lee Martin’s done well on the right, so has JET, so there’s been no room for him.”

Clear out the dead wood and get them off the wage bill. Thanks Jaime for your service it's a real shame it never really happened for you, especially after us town fans signed the petition to prove how much we wanted you here! I hope you find a club who really want you. As for the Duke....... Good luck finding the net wherever you end up cos your gonna need it!!!

Always thought Jaimie Peters was a " heart and soul " player. A great shame he didn't progress with us.

i have always really liked Jaime Peters and don't think hes been given a fair crack... surely jewell has learnt from Drury that players deserve their chance!

will be sad to see jaimie go- yes if he was good then he'd be in the 1st XI - but he's been stop/start - plenty of other underperformers have had a longer run in the side

To be fair JP's comments are fair, Ellington hasn't done it for us or any other clubs since he left Wigan. Regarding Peters, Edwards has been exceptional for most of the season as has JET, i do however think that Peters versatility and pace would have made him a good option from the bench this season.

With these new financial rules coming in , it makes sense to move both players on....we could bring in a very good player using both Peters and Ellingtons current wage.

No great surprise that PJ is willing to let both Peters and Ellington to move on IF someone is willing to take them on.Good luck to both of them trying to find pastures new.

Shame about Peters, a few seasons or so ago he showed real promise but has been left out in the wilderness really since the Keane era and even more so since Jewell has been here. All the best Jaimie. Ellington get the taxi!

Watched Peters a few times for Bournemouth and he was very poor ,his limited appearances for 4 seperate managers tells its own story at Town .
Ellington will only be back up behind Chops,Martin,Jet and Scotland for the front two places ,and seems to be one who would rather be playing than picking up his money ,good luck to him .
My worry is that Jewell thinks Edwards has been exceptional ,his positioning costs us a goal almost every week in the worst defence in the league ,we could have Ferdinand and Kompany playing centre backs and we would concede as our full backs let in far too many crosses or passes from the flanks due to positioning and poor tackling

Jewell is right with his comments.

Hopefully Ellington's wages aren't too high as we knew it was a gamble bringing him here given his recent record. At least a free transfer striker flop isn't comparible to a Roy Keane style £1.7M striker flop.

Peters has to be bitterly disappointed. A Canada international at such a young age and a players the Ipswich fans took to, who at the age of 24 didn't even impress Bournemouth enough to extend his loan. It is a real shame as I remember being pleased when he signed a 3 year contract with us.

Why the hell sign a player if he as not done it for 6 years?

Jewell please stop embarrassing yourself and ITFC.

Why are we letting our best players go? Ellington has been our player of the season by far

“I know he's a bit of a fans' favourite and everything else“ really Jewell? i would really class him as a fans favourite, worked hard but there never really was end product with him ..

“He's been disappointing Duke, there's no two ways about it.

No sh*t sherlock....
The laugh of it is its taken PJ a full season to work it out...no change there then
Problem is why would he move when some idiot agreed to pay him (v well no doubt) to sit around and do nothing for two seasons.

Drive him away PJ and dont either of you come back.

Yet more anti PJ rubbish on here when he`s taking the obviously correct descision.

shame if Jaime goes. good pace and a good player in my opinion. never really given a full run of games to show his worth. hope he finds a decent club where he can really go for it.

Where exactly is Ellington going to go? On loan somewhere with ITFC paying his wages if we're lucky.

Another Jewel gem hits the dust.
