Jewell: Murphy Deal Beyond Town
Jewell: Murphy Deal Beyond Town
Wednesday, 2nd May 2012 13:36

Town boss Paul Jewell says he doesn’t expect Daryl Murphy to be with the Blues for 2012/13. The 29-year-old has been on loan from Celtic this season, his second spell at Portman Road, and Jewell is keen to keep him, but feels the Irish international is out of the club’s price range.

Jewell said: "I don't think Daryl will be back here next year. I spoke to him and his agent a few times and we would have liked to have kept him but he's still got another year left on his contract at Celtic.

"We are grateful to Celtic for letting him come here but I think if we wanted to bring him here next season they would want a fee, and you can understand that. He's on decent wages as well. It's a deal that is out of our price range."

Waterford-born Murphy made 32 starts and two sub appearances during 2011/12, almost all on the left of midfield, and scored four goals.

Wasn't 100% convinced, so no big loss.

Shame. But no great surprise, I suppose. Wickham on loan could fit the bill, maybe Stevenson? Or JET is a lefty, he could switch maybe and allow Carson in on the right.

it's a shame a deal couldn't be done. but with the likes of Drury, Hyam, Bullard, JET, Martin, Stevenson, Carson and maybe with a bit of luck Peters, contending for midfield positions, I'd rather spend big on a player we know would make the difference.

Not a surprise.

No, not a surprise. However the whole financial dynamic of the SPL could change with the potential exclusion of Rangers. There maybe a situation evolving of which we might be able to take advantage.

Decent player and except JET on a good day, Murphy is the only player in our forward line capable of winning headers and he has turned into a good winger recently with some good dribbling and crossing... I fear we will miss him more than many on here realise.

However if we can find a young hungry replacement from a lower league with height I wont mind. Height is the key because as Jewell has said before, Carson really struggles for strength.

Wow! I hope Evans isn't going to betray PJ like he did with Keano. Just how tight is he going to be with the cash this year?

Solid but unspectacular, how many goals did he really create with his "wing play". I'd prefer to see someone new with some pace and an ability to beat the right back, can't say I ever saw Murphy do that.

Bloody hell we cant even afford a player as poor as him. No loss in itself but this a very bad sign.

Evans clearly has given up. I wonder if he will look to sell.

There's better in that position and most a lot cheaper or free. Plenty of great bargains out there this window!

Not too bothered, always thought he was in the team primarily to be an outlet for ALB goal kicks. His lack of pace and general wing play hindered him also, and a better option could be found for next season.

Some baffling comments on here, he always put in a shift for us, was passionate and instrumental in the team.

Boyd ?

Whenever I saw him I always thought he was one of our more consistant performers, held the ball up well, provided an ariel threat and linked up well with Cresswell.
Hopefully PJ has a plan B as we don't have any real cover on the left wing if he goes. I suppose JET could move accross to the left and Edwards onto RW and a new RB be brought in, or we could push Cresswell further forwards but then we have no LB. Just shows how thin are squad really is.

Paul Jewel for WBA.

But not an out-and-out wide midfielder though Hollywoodginge. We need someone who can beat players, whip decent balls into the box and score a few. Murphy did well at times but we need someone in the Coppinger, Boyd, Whittingham mould i reckon.

Murphy scored 4 goals and only created 3 assists. However he would be useful but not at a big price. The trouble is most players prefer to warm the bench for more money. Also PJ said "but I think if we wanted to bring him here next season they would want a fee." He thinks - why not contact Celtic and ask? They could spring a surprise and want to offload him cheaply - no good making assumptions!

I wasn't impressed at first, but he improved as the season went on & think in the end he was important to us. He will be missed. Don't think he's going to attract Premier League clubs though, and if we can't afford him, the only Championship clubs that could are those with PL parachute money.

He's got a good knock and he wins our headers but times are tuff for money.. for midfield we don't have any problems as such. Martin, Carson, Peters, Jet.. that's 4 proper natural wingers. As for midfield we have... Bullard, Durry, Hyam Lawrence and Stevenson can do a job in there its really not a problem. But wish him a great season at Celtic and hope him all the best for the future!

That's a shame ... i thought he was a good fit for our current team. But if it's not to be, i won't lose any sleep over it.

Whether or not we should sign Murphy is not what causes me disquiet. The fact that he is considered out of our club's "price range" does not bode well for Evans ambition for our club.

It's a shame really I thought murphy was a decent player. Does that mean mr Coppinger is coming to town?

Typical number of factually wrong statements on here. I can tell you debenhamsteve he's got more than 3 assists.

Can't beat a full back? Again wrong, Murphy did this most games. He's been our best crosser of the ball all season. People dismiss him as 'poor' and 'unspectacular' just because he's not the most exciting player in the world and can't do all the tricks. He's not there to be spectacular, he's there to do a job, which he has done as well as anyone this season. He's also a lot quicker than people give him credit for. Again they dismiss him as 'slow' just because he's 6ft 3. He's also got some POWER, which we're very short of, and this often makes up for any lack of pace, in any player.

His versatility was useful also when we wanted to go 4-4-2, he was always a good option up front.

We'll miss him, I know that for a fact unless we get in someone of his quality and build, and that won't be easy.

I'd get Wickham and play him wide left in 4-2-3-1.
