Town Could Receive Summer Windfalls
Town Could Receive Summer Windfalls
Thursday, 17th May 2012 08:43

Town could benefit from two of their players moving on this summer with midfielder Liam Trotter and striker Jordan Rhodes both linked with close season switches. Trotter has been mentioned in connection with a £1.5 million move from Millwall to Southampton, while prolific frontman Rhodes is interesting a number of clubs.

If Ipswich-born midfielder Trotter does make the move it would be to Town's advantage as the deal which took the 23-year-old to the Den for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2010 included a similarly under-wraps sell-on clause.

Trotter has impressed since joining the Lions and is also believed to have been watched by a number of Premier League clubs.

The Blues would also prosper if Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes moved on during the close season with the sell-on included in the controversial 2009 deal which saw the 22-year-old move to the League One side believed to be around 12% of the profit the Terriers would make if they sell him.

According to reports this morning, Fulham are the frontrunners to land the 40-goal striker for a £3.5 million fee with Norwich, Aston Villa and West Ham also said to be interested.

A figure in that region would take the overall cash Town have received for the Scottish international to around £1 million.

The Blues are understood to already have been paid more than £600,000 from the Rhodes deal which included several clauses based on both the player and the club reaching milestones. One of those is understood to be promotion, which the West Yorkshire club could still achieve this season having reached the League One play-off final where they take on Sheffield United.

Elsewhere, ex-Town loanee Keith Andrews has been released by West Brom having signed a short-term contract with the Baggies after leaving both the Blues and parent club Blackburn in January, although there is the possibility that he could sign a new deal if the new manager at the Hawthorns wants him. Keeper Márton Fülöp, who joined West Brom from Town early in the season, has also left the Midlands side.

Former Blues coach and Radio Suffolk regular Steve Foley has been named head coach of Ryman League Division One North champions Leiston.

Meanwhile, David Norris’s rumoured possible return to Town from relegated Portsmouth this summer appears unlikely with manager Paul Jewell dismissing the idea that he might be considering re-signing the club’s former skipper towards the end of the season: “No, not really. Chuck’s a terrific lad but I’ve got other targets we’re pursuing.”

Norris and chief executive Simon Clegg have remained in touch on a regular basis by text since the former Plymouth man moved on, which has led to speculation that the 31-year-old might return to Portman Road.

As much as people regret the selling of Rhodes I also regret the release of Trotter which gets hardly any mention. We could certainly have used him since he left.

Everybody bashes on about Jordan Rhodes, but I was one of the few who said we would regret not doing more to keep Trotter at Portman Road when he left. When are we going to start showing faith in our young players again? The arguement that they're simply not making the grade doesn't stand up to much scrutiny and even those who have proved themselves, like Tommy Smith, are given a bit of a decision to make by only being offered a two year deal. Seems very short-sighted, if he has a good season we'll only have to improve his terms in the summer or let him walk.

It will be a big jump for Rhodes to go from div 1 to the premier league,, but good luck to him I say !!!
Also of Trotter another who could go to the premier league as well ?? good luck to him also !!!
Our ex Dark Lord could not see the potential in either of these players,,,
He has a lot to answer for !!!!!!

The Dark Lord showed really bad judgment, but he gave at least some of our young players a fair chance. Our current management are reluctantly doing it...and only for lack of options. it is a bit disturbing to be honest...

an extra 400k for Rhodes, Clegg all is forgiven!

You are clearly a football God of the highest order.

I bet none of the other clubs CEO's ever laugh at you for selling the the hotest property outside the PL for peanuts.

J.Lewis is signing 4 Cardiff: reports this morning say J.Ward has turned down Leeds I personally think this target gone on 2 long now. I'd like the town 2 sign S.Williams MKD leftsided defender n can play in midfield v comfortable on the ball, S.Beavon Wycombe young quick n wouldn't cost much, J.Butterfield too replace Leadbitter unfortunately N.Powell will b 2 expensive hope he goes too the right club Reading or Swansea n not rot in Man U or Chelsea reserves, R.Keogh would b a good signing both Coventry n Carlisle he has won player of the year I think S.Clingan on free would b a good signing good on the ball n dangerous from set-pieces I think all these players r realistic n affordable under FFR

Just think if we had kept Trotter, Rhodes, Wickam, Garvan, D Wright and McAuley we maybe relishing premiership football ourselves. We got rid of too many hungry young players and not the crocks of Bullard and Bowyer that will not be playing next season. Looking at the squad we have we have holes in defence, midfield and attack. Oh and goalkeepers too. If your serious to manage us PJ then start filling these holes and get us a squad ready for the season ahead and no excuses please.

Trotter was offered a new contract but decided not to take it. Was I seem to recall a regular in Roy's side at one time. Shame he moved, but his choice and I am very pleased it worked out for him.

The windfalls would be most welcome, but have no confidence in Clegg actually spending any of it - look at what happened to the Wickham money - very few fews paid - although we did spend alot on wages for poor signings like Ellington, Bowyer, Bullard, Sonko and Ingimarrsson.

Re Norris - would be a backwards step and at 31 years old, not the right age - particularly as PJ has 'learnt his lesson' and won't be signing oldies and loans.

With other clubs busy signing players - looking forward to PJ/Clegg announcing a new arrival very soon.

So a million quid in total for a youngster who has scored prolifically at every level he has played is ok then. Sweet as a nut. GoanFYS's the board, the owner and the previous and current coaches. morons, the lot ofem. As are you apologists.

The Rhodes business will always rile me & a few hundred thousand extra compensation won't help. Everyone says get over it and get on, well that's true I suppose, but still the worst ever management decision in ITFC history. When he's 36 yrs old and retired from football, I may get over it. Trotter though looked much better at Milwall than he ever did for us. Again, possibly a coaching failure by us. Don't want Norris back - he's a good player, but will soon be veteran status.

Don't worry. The money will be spent wisely. Last year, the turnstiles got a nice new lick of paint. This year, who knows. . . Maybe some more powerful hand-driers in the executive washrooms!!

sign them both and we'll get a discount so much better than allow them to sign elsewhere!

Unless you're an instant crowd favourite it is difficult for a local youngster to break through successfully into the first team. Lots of initial excitement, friends and family watching etc but if it's tough going and the crowd start barracking you it can quickly become a nightmare. Trotter probably found it easier to develop away from Town and the pressure of being a local kid

Not worried about Trotter, he was awful for us and got hammered every week by the fans.

He's gone to Millwall and done well, fair play. Their manager has obviously just got more out of him than ours could.

I also get riled by the sale of Rhodes who's scored at every level (including the first team at ITFC) and when you see him sold for what seems a low fee AND with a sell-on as low as 12% of profit you have to despair. When he moves to a lower league club, if he's successful then a number of the add-ons may not come to fruition as he will move up relatively quickly (as we have seen) so a low sell-on % [for what seemed a cheeky bid] seems appalling business when he's been brought through the youth set up.

As a shareholder I'm disgusted at this given how much (my admittedly meagre) holding has already notionally fallen in value. I'm surprised ME would sanction this as he appears to want to get as much return from the business with minimum outlay now as he's already ploughed a lot of money in and the rewards only come from the premier league - which is starting to seem a distant dream.

£3.5m for a 40 goal man, just shows what a great job the club did in getting more than twice that for Wickham

would've had £5million if we'd have kept them.

Craig Gordon leaving Sunderland? Never!!

You mean a player Roy Keane spent a lot of money on is allowed to get to the end of his contract and then leave for nothing. Who would believe it?

Nicky Shorey has been released I would like to point out.

The whole rhodes thing is very tiresome. Bottom line these things happen in football and we got the bad rub of the green. He may totally flop when he goes to the PL/championship, we will have to wait and see. He may just be a League 1 striker and that is a place we don't want to be.

Lets just move on and look forward to the new season. A good start and a consistant season will see us into the play offs. In the end we were 4 wins and 2 drawers off the play offs, in the grand scheme of things, not a million miles away.

Come on guys and gals lets turn the frowns upside down and really get behind the club for a good season.
