Chambers Returns to Nottingham Wednesday, 4th Jul 2012 08:20
Town target Luke Chambers is understood to have returned home to Nottingham last night having spent much of yesterday at Portman Road with his move to the Blues believed to be close to breaking down. The 26-year-old is thought to be weighing up various alternative options with Leeds and a number of other clubs also said to be interested.
Chambers underwent a medical and took a tour of the ground and training facilities yesterday but talks which continued well into the evening were unable to be concluded.
Blues boss Paul Jewell has Chambers well up his list of summer targets and it would be a huge blow to see the former Northampton man, a free agent since his Forest contract expired at the weekend, move elsewhere.
In addition to weekend links with Leeds, whose takeover is on the verge of being agreed, Chambers has previously been mentioned in connection with West Brom, Wigan and Leicester City.

MintyHalfWit dont want to destroy your wondefully poetic post, but Jewell was still on holiday yesterday :-) Nottingham local rags reporting the deal all but done just needed to 'mull over' and would sign today.... who knows eh?!

If he signs for Leeds, or anyone else for that matter I fully expect all the moaning Clegg outers on here to start moaning about Chambers and that it "was all about the money" and that we don't want greedy players here etc etc

This is like Groundhog Day. Who knows whether the deal has been done or dumped, but it is good to see that there are a few sensible comments in here amongst the Clegg whining. If it fails then it would most likely be because Chambers wanted some wage outside the wage structure. Who would seriously want that? @jonny - Some of them do say that, but I wouldn't take much notice of that as when you dig a little deeper you will find that he won and became runner up in their player of the year award in the last 2-3 years. Last season was just a bad one after taking the captains band, and now that he wants to leave it's just a case of sour grapes.

Seems we continue to spend a pound to save a penny. If you look back, how much money has been spent on players who were not good enough or had off the field problems. One can only think they were willing to take what was offered. Is this the way to build a premier side?

He'll probably sign at midday.

Not being funny but surely Clegg and co have some idea of what the player expects and the sort of money they are after? You pay peanuts, you get monkeys! Its the cold hard thuth! If we are serious about getting out of this hell hole of a league then we have to pay the going rate and take a gamble!! Do you honestly think man city would have won the premier league by offering world class players champioship money?? Its the same in this league, decent players cost decent money with decent wages!! If you dont take a gamble in football then you go nowhere, Simple! If Clegg keeps offering rubbish wages then what does he expect?
Guthrum added 10:15 - Jul 4
If things do break down, it may not have been wages - Chambers might have demanded the Captaincy (after all, he was at Forest and Northampton before that), with Town being unwilling to give it to him from the off.

Every job interview I have had, I went home afterwards to tell the wife the result. Nottingham is a short distance away and he could be back here by eleven today. Its just Phil's Daily Express reporting. Raise them up and then knock them down next headline. Let's just wait and see what the club says.

No surprise, we wont sign anyone except from young players in the lower leagues.

Having been a distant observer of this forum for some time, restraining every fibre in my body to not take the plunge and respond to the comments/stories posted...today I feel I have no choice but to participate. I do not profess to being the most ardent of ITFC supporters in comparison to many of the self-confessed ITFC "experts" and "loyalists" that throw their weight around with words of "wisdom" on a daily basis, but I love my club. My wife sometimes compares my relationship with Ipswich Town as a 'love-affair'. From reading the fickle, negative, ill-timed and unfounded critical comments on this forum, there are many on here that cannot boast the same. I certainly wouldn't speak of my missus in such a quick, ill-tempered manner! And before you say it, my season ticket is loose change in comparison to her costs!!!This is not about who is the right or wrong man at the helm/management/owner of our club, this story is simply about a 26 year old footballer, who is on the verge of making a lifestyle choice, and has asked for more time to consider what he is to do. Of course, there is every chance that he is after more money, or he was not impressed with Clegg/PJ/Evans etc, but do we actually know any of those details? Agents annoy us all, they have ruined most sports, but that is what is to be expected nowadays, so lets not act as if this is anything new. A Bosman means there will be plenty of offers on the table. It isn't as if he is restricted to speaking with one or two clubs as per transfers. Clegg/PJ do not know who they are competing with, so they have to remain realistic. Maybe there is some truth in people calling for Clegg/PJ being present at the ground during the visit, but does anyone actually know if ME himself was not there? This is something he has done in the past by all accounts!? As for our illustrious history of a club being banded round as if it entitles us to so much more, we all need to move on. I am proud of what we have achieved, but the more I read on here of people whinging and moaning about players not coming to ITFC and choosing clubs with less heritage, it really cheapens our past achievements and cuts to the core of where we are so wide of the mark. The last time I looked, Notts Forest have a history that competes with us at ole PR, so surely Chambers shouldn't want to leave a bigger club!?!? Leeds are arguably in the same boat! Best I wrap this up, most of you are probably falling asleep and/or seething and itching to riposte, but I finish with this. I go for a job interview, I meet the management, I see the surroundings, have my role and expectations laid out in front of me, I pass all with flying colours and I am offered my contract. I ask for a little bit more time to ponder my future. I go home, I speak with my family and decide to have a look at what I may be signing up for, and I stumble across a website, where the majority of the people commenting about this new company I may join hate the management, hate the owners and speak only derogatory words about the company...where will my head and heart take me now....?

For all those with blind faith, why does it look like another deal is breaking down? This happened under Keane and is now happening under Jewell so I'm not sure it's the manager who is at fault here (PJ apparently wasn't even there) I think the problems come from above, there is something significantly wrong with signing players at the moment, why? It's about time the truth came out of the club, because I fear that we either don't have the funds to pay Championship wages or simply won't negotiate past our first (and final?) offer. If people like Bluelady and probably Keanish (and myself) are starting to turn then there's something seriously wrong. Evans, Clegg sort it out, because if you don't with the strength of squad we have there is only one way we're going and that's down.

Lets not get carried away... It seems clear that the agent is trying to get the best deal for his player. Reports bouncing around seem to indicate that Chambers is looking for 16k a week. I agree that the club should stick to a wage structure, and this seems a lot of money for a player who lets be honest had one good season with Forest 2 years ago but has failed to deliver since. Just check out the Forest forums... everyone in Nottingham seem to be glad to see the back of him and are laughing at his ridiculous wage demands.

This club is in trouble we cannot attract quality players and if we do we try to dictate stupid terms and wont pay a little more to keep them we are becoming a laughing stock Mr clegg you are embarrasing the people that love this club you control the purse strings please try a little harder

Forest fan in peace. Chambers is an average to decent championship ch in my opinion. He's been at Forest long enough to have put in more than one decent season (yes he did win player of the season the year before last). Last year he was awful - terrible positioning, too many errors awful attitude. Don't know whether having the captains armband was a good move but we were screaming for someone else to be given that. He had no fight when we were in the mire last year, blamed the fans for getting on the teams back when we went through our horrible goalless run around christmas, and for his attitude alone most of us would have driven him to Ipswich or anywhere else with pleasure. I think he'll sign for you, no one else will offer him those terms he's not worth it. If he does sign for you you'll get a reasonable ch, but not a leader, and a player who points the blame at anyone but himself when things go wrong. Anyway good luck for the season, apart from 2 games obviously. Cheers

According to the Nottingham evening post it reads that Chambers was last night mulling over the move to Ipswich but should sign for them tomorrow (today)on a 3 year deal. At Forest he was on 8k a week & Town are looking to double it!!
Marshalls_Mullet added 10:33 - Jul 4
1972Blue - Where are the reports of £16k per week, not doubting you, just interested. We should not be paying many players over £6-8k per week in my view.

Cheers paulforest, I just looked on the forest forum and saw some of the fans describing him as an "utterly utterly usless arrogant sh$t c@nt" and another describes him as a useless lump........still better than delaney right?

@paulforest, thanks and good luck for your season as well (obviously as you say apart from 2 games) Thanks for the heads up, it seems a lot of Forest fans have said he's average, good on his day etc...but when we see another report like this we wonder why we can't even attract 'average' players then I don't know which direction our club is heading. As has been pointed out, we're not a bigger club than Forest (maybe faired better in recent history apart from a few seasons when you missed out in play offs etc) so fans shouldn't moan about him not wanting to join us as the bigger club because that's not the case. The problem I can see is if we can't attract an out of contract 'average' defender then who will we get to sort out our less than average left biased defence?
Marshalls_Mullet added 10:43 - Jul 4
FAO Legend Your list means nothing? West Ham may be an exception (with parachute payments), but which out of the rest gained promotion by 'gambling' / spending beyond their means? Certainly not Blackpool or Norwich. Brighton have not been promoted. You have simply listed promoted sides, most of which had strong managers. Very poor effort.
