Peterborough Joint Bid Accepted
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that Peterborough United have accepted a joint bid for midfielder George Boyd (above) and striker Paul Taylor (below). The Blues manager, who also confirmed that Town are in talks with Celtic regarding former loanee Daryl Murphy, is set to meet with the Posh pair this afternoon to talks terms.

Speaking after last night’s Capital One Cup second round defeat at Carlisle, Jewell said: “It’s apparent we need players, I’ve been saying that for a while now.

“We made an offer for a couple of players [on Monday] and I’m hoping to try and move that forward [on Wednesday].

“[Peterborough have] accepted an offer from us and I’m meeting [the players] tomorrow and hopefully we can move that forward.”

As reported yesterday, Town are also in talks regarding Daryl Murphy’s return on loan from Celtic: “There’s the possibility that that might happen. We need some height in the team.

“It’s not just height, we don’t want to bring giants in, we want people who can play. The squad needs strengthening, not just the team. We’ve got to be able to make changes that can affect games.”

Having been in the North-West for the last few days he admits he’s not certain how far the deal which would see the Irish international return to Suffolk for a third loan spell has progressed: “I think he’s on Celtic’s bench tomorrow, so I’m not quite sure where we are with that.

“We’re trying to bring in not just those three, but we’re trying to bring one or two others in as well.

“We’re hoping that it’ll be busy [in the next few days before Friday's 11pm deadline]. It’s been a long, frustrating summer but hopefully, I don’t like to count my chickens, but hopefully we can get things sorted out in the next 24 or 48 hours.

“What we’re trying to do is bring players in, whether they’ll be loans or permanents depends on a lot of factors.”

Jewell refused to be drawn any further regarding Boyd and Taylor, who reports from Peterborough suggest will cost the Blues £2 million, until the deals are done: “I’ll answer those questions hopefully in the next couple of days.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed that his club had accepted offers on Twitter but not who they were for or from whom: "I won't speak about clubs but [I] can confirm Posh have accepted multiple bids for some of our listed players as [this] is how [the] market works."

Both Boyd and Taylor had been placed on the transfer list having refused to accept new contracts with a year remaining on their current deals.

Boyd, 26, has been linked with the Blues since his days with Stevenage. The central or left midfielder, a Charlton schoolboy as a youngster, joined Posh for a then-record Conference transfer fee of £260,000 in 2007.

The 6ft 1in tall Chatham-born player moved to Nottingham Forest on loan in March 2010 with a view to a longer-term switch but made only five starts and one sub appearance while at the City Ground, the latter against Town, before returning to London Road and signing his current contract.

England C cap and Scotland B cap Boyd, who was promoted from League One twice and League Two once with Posh, has made 261 starts and seven sub appearances while with Peterborough, scoring 70 goals. Jewell watched him in action the day after he had been appointed Town boss in January 2011.

While Boyd has a long history with Posh, 24-year-old Taylor only joined the Cambridgeshire side last year.

The Liverpudlian played youth football with Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City before moving on to Conference North side Vauxhall Motors, joining Chester City, then in League Two, on loan in the summer of 2008.

After he had made two starts and seven sub appearances, his Chester loan was terminated with news subsequently emerging that he had tested positive for cocaine and as a result he was banned for six months.

The 5ft 7in tall frontman joined Belgian side Montegnée on his return to football, doing well enough to earn a move to Anderlecht in December 2009.

A loan spell at Charleroi followed and in March 2011, without him appearing for Anderlecht, he joined Posh after impressing while on trial.

Last season Taylor netted 12 goals in 38 starts and nine sub appearances. This year he has scored twice — including one in last night’s 3-2 Capital One Cup defeat to Reading — in five games.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa seem unlikely to renew their interest in Aaron Cresswell with manager Paul Lambert having confirmed that his club has made an approach for Middlesbrough left-back Joe Bennett: “Hopefully something might happen on that. Has a bid gone in? Near enough."

really annoys me when people say clegg will cock it up all he can do is offer what is dictated to him by evens, so how can he cock it up!!
evans and jewell are the only ones that can cock it up but even then the players may not want to come to ipswich.
if i had no bias to town and i was a pro would i want to be in the sticks or in say sheffield a big city with other big citys within 50 miles, a big draw to a young rich footy player

If we are going for Boyd, Murphy and Taylor, does this mean that they are expecting a bid for Martin before transfer deadline day!

Some of you really do p*ss me off, if this story was about a defender you'd be moaning we need a striker!

First we need two centre backs we have let in 9 goals now in four games, yes we would love Taylor and Boyd at Portman Rd but we have heard all this hype before, the world now knows about these two players a simple question would you come here ?

Bossman - Taylor has one attribute that Chopra certainly does not...pace!

From what I've seen of Taylor he is class. Remember his two goals against us last year? Two top quality finishes.

Still, I'll be very surprised if we pull this off in all honesty. Hope so though.

boyd is the priority out of those 2, we need a left mid and he fits the bill perfectly, we need a cb whose older with more experience to help smith and chambers along because together they will not be strong enough this season

I just can't understand the mrntality of people moaning about this. I wouldnt have thought it would have gone unnoticed that as much as we cant defend we cant score either so an offer is accepted for 2 players that were instrumental in a 7-1 thrashing last season, just to point out there credentials and as they travel to portman road to discus terms and the 'Ipswich faithfull' are moaning and bleating that 'their not the right payers','their not defenders','their not Messi' well a message to the moaners and bleaters and the people who post on here just to see there inane utterances on the internet, find something else to do and leave the true supporters of Ipswich Town free of your random pointless scribbling. We all get down over bad results and may question strange signings but some of you could not put together a positive post if we won the league, your a disgrace to the blue.COYB'S

I personally believe that these two would give us an extra quality to our attack. I like Josh Carson but i just dont ever feel like hes terrorizing the opposition. Boyd will play out there instead and would do a better job in my opinion. I also feel that Taylor again gives us extra competition up front which is always a good thing, especially as Big Jase is unlikely to be able to do 90 minutes every week.
I do obviously agree that we need some extra strength at the back following recent results, however i would want to make that statement with caution. The truth is that i think Blackpool will be "that team" this year, the one who steam rolls through to April with minimal wobble and fuss. Whether that is true or not is yet to be seen but ive definitely felt worse following a heavy defeat and im not sure whether we can be truely gutted about it. Its embarrassing yes but lets see how others get on against them.
Again last night is a bad defeat but it sounded to me like we needed some extra cutting edge in the first half and we could well have been out of sight before we conceded two sloppy goals. So again as much as i think we need to strengthen the back surely an extra sharpness up top is a blessing in disguise!
Lets get back to the days of Bent/Shefki and before that DJ when it never mattered how many we let in, because we always scored more haha!

The mess of the last 3-4 years makes me realise even more what a great job BFJ did. You never realise what you've got till it's gone.

Well disapointed we lost last night we looked by far the better team for most of the game ahh well lets move forward and PJ is a good manager his trying his best to get in the players he needs and if anything you cant hold a good man down well not for long I beleive that weve got to hold our nerve and Im sure on Sataurday we will get a good result at home with the addition of these three great players I have every confidence that PJ will pull this around along with the players....COYB

two good signings hopefully and they both like to run at players and in my opinion we only have 2 players who can do that with any conviction and they are carson and martin bring on Huddersfield!

Just a thought what's wrong with Jewell playing Guirane N'Daw next to chambers to shore up the defence? big strong tall lad who I think can make a difference to defence if played in that position.

Ipswich61 yes I do agree we need both and last night proved that more than ever but one has got to come before the other, if by Friday we don't have a cb then I will also be annoyed but I do hope that these past 2 games will be a wake up call to mr Evans that he need to spend this summer or gamble the championship status of the club

There is still the small matter of getting these people to agree terms and sign.
Having a bid accecpted is one thing. Clegg must do what Sheepshanks used to do.....Not let the players leave until they sign...Too many have walked away from our club, It's about time Clegg grew a pair and do what he is paid to do!
I will be well chuffed if these two sign, along with N'Daw, a new centre back and a new striker and we will have ourselves a half decent squad.

Fingers crossed we dont agree wages terms which is more than likely. That will mean the signing on fees will be available for at least three defenders to replace Cresswell Smith and Edwards.

Sorry but so underwhelmed by any signing talked about. Sad day that we get excited about players coming from Posh. O how we have fallen. As for Murphy ... No thanks.

Would be excellent signings in my opinion, Boyd is an established player at this level and will give us a bit of guile and end product, Taylor isn't a natural goalscorer but that's what Chopra is, Taylor seems a skilful player who will chip in and create more than score. We're playing good football but lacking that end product which these two could provide and I believe their could be a good 20 goals between them. I hope we get Murphy as well, he will bring some physicality and a bit of steel to us, and I think Boyd and Taylor will bring that flair and spark in the final third.
