McCarthy: Mings Could Be Involved Quickly
Thursday, 13th Dec 2012 18:06

Manager Mick McCarthy says Tyrone Mings will be in and around the first team squad very quickly if he plays as he did in his trial match on Monday. The 19-year-old signed an 18-month deal with the Blues earlier this afternoon after the club agreed a deal with the Evo-Stik Southern League side, which includes a pre-season friendly at the Wiltshire club.

McCarthy said: “Tyrone has a pedigree of being at a club with his time at Southampton and, through Russell and Steve McCall, who became aware of him, we brought him here on Monday to have a look at him against the Nike Academy.

“He played at left-back. He’s quick, he’s 6ft 3in, he loves a tackle. He’s only 19 but plays the game like a bloke. He’s a good talker, organises and we’re delighted to have him in.

“He’s going to be in and around the squad pretty quickly if he shows everything he did on Monday.

“There is loads to work with. We are going to give him an opportunity and it will be great if it works out.”

In addition to being with the Saints’ academy between the ages of eight and 15, Mings, whose father Adie recently left his role as Chippenham's director of football to take up a scouting position at Chelsea, has spent spells with Bristol Rovers and Yate Town, as well as at Millfield School.

Speaking in an interview with Ipswich Player, Mings, who has been handed the number 15 shirt, says it’s been quite a week since he first discovered that Town wanted him to come on trial at the end of last week: “It’s just been a crazy time really. This time last week I was working as a mortgage broker. Something I have been doing for nine months.

“Then I found out at the end of last week that Ipswich wanted me to come in and play in a friendly. After the game the manager said he’d like to sign me and here we are. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind.”

Russell Osman's son Toby, who had a trial himself with the Blues in 2007, played alongside the Blues new signing at Chippenham and is claiming responsibility for his now-former team-mate's move, tweeting: "Congrats to my man Tyrone on his move! If anyone wants to speak to [him] please come through his agent [Toby Osman]!"

Mings says a number of clubs, including Hereford United, had shown interest this season but nothing beyond that: “There have been a few clubs said to be interested but nothing has materialised until now. This is a life-changing opportunity for me and I’ve got to make sure I take it.”

Guys I know everything there is to know about football, my knowledge and understanding is way above micks level, for this reason I believe that this guy is a good prospect for the future he is not a first team player yet. It would be a risk to say the least. Give it a few games and you WILL agree.

Phil, strike this ITFC1958 Clown straight off this forum. It's blindingly obvious he is a Norfolk troll trying his best to spread negativity. He has never seen Tyrone Mings play!

At 6'3" He's been signed as a left centre half, not full back. Cover for Tommy Smith. Higginbotham will not sign in January as he doesn't want to be warming the bench for an average Championship side. More future anyway with Mings than an ageing below average Premier League player well beyond his prime.

At last a manager who is looking to the future and not one who is looking for a quick (and expensive) fix - it may take time but Mick has a plan! Unlike Keene and Jewell. Put Mick in charge of the whole club and get rid of Clegg, an expensive luxury.

Remembering what it's like to have a 'club' now- not just an under-performing first team. Proper vision for the future, picking up non-league/young players and giving them a go. Much better than PL rejects looking for a bit of dosh! But as I say, good to see the club as a whole- as a process- the traditional way. And plain to see Mick's used to sourcing his own talent rather than hearing about it from some agents!

Good singing - cheap, young, ambituous - start of a Dynasty?

The more we go on in the McCarthy era the more we will see what a pleb Jewell was and how stupid it was of Clegg and Evans to allow him to stay in the job over the summer.

Good move With little to lose.

As a Chippenham based fan myself I'm well chuffed about the friendly but also know friends of his and can confirm he has travelled with the squad to Leeds. Good on Mick getting him properly involved in the squad straight away and getting him hungry to be involved.

For all too long we've had many good players on paper but have delivered nothing, no harm in having a couple of younger players without the big prices, wages and ego to play with pride and desire (hopefully)!

Nice one mick

I have to say this but Mick McCarthy is truly the man who will see Ipswich reach the premier league, there is no question. He has the right attitude to do what he thinks right and sod what anyone else thinks. He cares about his fan base but knows what he's got to do to succeed, is totally focused and has got straight on with the job. This is the first of many signings that he will surprise us with...but trust him. COYB

Dont let ITFC 1958 wind you all up as he will sod off again for a few days when we win again on saturday
He is a armchair supporter and i reckon he has never seen a game in his life
He has never got anything good to say about Town and he should be given a red card off here
I would like to see him say some of the things he has said about Mick McCarthy to Micks face because big Mick would eat him for breakfast .
Do us all a favour ITFC 1958 go and support some one else so we dont have to keep reading your stupid remarks anymore.

Rlamb3 I have had a season ticket and loyally watch every home and away match AT THE STADIUM. I have also been disappointed with the attendance. I think if you don't like what I say then just minus it and let that be done with it. NOBODY likes to see that you have posted a paragraph every story. I am and will remain a loyal fan of itfc!

Rlamb3 - leave ITFC1958 to his own opinion. If he says that he has seen the player then fair enough.

With regards to Mick, it looks good. All the signs are there and we have had decent results. With regards to trusting him, well put it like this - i wouldn't give him the keys to my house and open up a joint bank account if he had moved in 8 weeks ago - even if he did put in a couple of good performances by washing the dishes, cleaning the toilet, putting the bins out and dusting in the places that i cannot reach (like the top of the kitchen cupboards - very awkward).

And with regards to saying things to Big Mick's face - i would be more than happy to Say "Oi Mick - No" to his face, because i am not a short chap like yourself and i have a bit of weight behind me too. So if Big Mick want's to have an arm wrestle, naked mud wrestle, or even better wrestle in spandex then bring it on.
