Former Town midfielder Kieron Dyer has left QPR after the Premier League side activated a release clause in his contract. Dyer, 34, moved to Loftus Road in the summer of 2011, shortly after an injury-hit loan spell back with the Blues, his hometown club.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp said: "I'd like to thank Kieron for his services to QPR. If he can stay clear of injuries I'm sure there's clubs out there that will offer him the chance to play football.

"He wasn't in my plans and I think he's got something to offer someone, so we wish him all the best."

Dyer came through the Town academy and was at Portman Road until joining Newcastle United in the summer of 1999 for a fee which eventually rose to £6.5 million.

The midfielder returned home on loan from West Ham in March 2011 but was able to make just one start and three sub appearances.

His time with QPR was similar hampered by fitness issues and he made only four starts, played four games from the bench and scored his only goal in Saturday’s 1-1 FA Cup draw at home to West Brom.

Dyer has said in the past that he would like to finish his career with the Blues, whether Mick McCarthy would be interested in bringing him back to Portman Road for a third spell remains to be seen.

marshland added 12:02 - Jan 8 In 1999 he was an exceptional player for us and was the driving force of that team. He was widely tipped to be a regular England player and to become a football great. Whether it was misfortune or the reported off pitch antics that were responsible he has not lived up to any of that potential. His best role to use could be as a warning to the young players (and Mr Chopra) about the need to lead a clean life on and off the pitch to achieve your potential. I will still remember his time at Portman Road with pleasure. Certainly in my top 10 all time blues.

You can never go back in time, wish him well but not one for us, can;t see Mick being tempted. Met him once he is a damn nice lad and his heart has always been at Ipswich, maybe one day he'll come back in some other capacity, think his playing days are over :(

Edmunds5 added 13:26 - Jan 8 Impressive for us, and its not exactly his fault that he's been plagued by injuries but the fact is its difficult to sign someone with that kind of injury record. @Mattinlondon he played 32 times for England, didn't score and I can't remember him making much of an impact but knowing how football has evolved he probably would have got 100 caps. Also heard that he burnt £50 notes in front of fans, if thats wrong then feel free to put me right but its what I heard, immediately put me right of him.
