New Wolves Boss Wants to Keep Stearman
Wednesday, 12th Jun 2013 09:58

New Wolves manager Kenny Jackett wants to keep hold of former Blues loanee Richard Stearman, according to tabloid reports this morning. However, the player himself is said to be less than keen to play at League One level and would prefer a return to Portman Road, where he spent a successful spell during the second half of last season.

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with Stearman’s displays while at Portman Road but wouldn’t be drawn into discussing his possible return on a permanent basis with the 25-year-old having a season remaining on his contract at Molineux.

Speaking in April, McCarthy said: “He’s a Wolves player and I wouldn’t even begin to talk about it because it would be unprofessional and unfair.

“What I would say is that he has done very, very well. He has been excellent. But he’s a loan player, he’s not my player. Wolves might want to take him back, somebody else might fancy him the way he’s played for me.”

The right-back or central defender is likely to command a not insignificant fee, while matching his Wolves wages might also prove a stumbling block for Town with McCarthy’s budget understood to be tight and the Blues looking in the main at Bosman free signings this summer.

Scotland international Kirk Broadfoot, who is expected to leave Blackpool and become a free agent at the end of the month, has been linked with Town on a number of occasions and like Stearman plays at right-back and centre-half.

I think signing Stearman is a big priority this summer, he is decent going forwards but his solidity at the back was key to us turning our season around last year...while i have massive hopes for Elliot Hewitt, we saw over the last couple of years what can happen if you have a pacy attacking right-back who's defensive game is not quite there - it puts pressure on the rest of the defence and causes us to leak goals. Unfortunately, i suspect we will only be able to sign him and others who require a fee if we manage to offload one or both of JET and Chopra...

Wouldn't read too much into this, I'm sure Jackett won't stand in his way too much. Wolves aren't in a position where they can demand big fees. Oh and thanks for McCarthy!

Whether or not Jackett wants to keep hold of Stearman makes little difference - the player is too good for League One and is unlikely to stick around, even if Kenny is the best boss Wolves have had since they let Mick go.

Whether or not we are the team that would sign him is a very different question. I have my doubts - unlike many of the other loanees we've subsequently signed, neither manager nor player sounded all that confident of Stearman coming back at the end of his loan spell.

But if he doesn't, we'll still cope. Think of all those "must-have" signings we've missed out on over the years yet still found decent people to replace them. Moreover, think of all the "must-have" signings we DID make that ended up being rubbish!

I think Hewitt is good enough.... and I want to see him play. We will have a failry workmanlike midfield in Tabb, Hyam and Skuse. So some attach from the full backs is important. Which Hewitt is far better as than Stearman. I think we'll see another CB as cover who can also be a right back.

Kenny Jackett may well want to keep Stears - and a whole host of other players for that matter - but many of them are of a Premier League standard and will NOT want to be playing in League One. I don't see this as much of a set-back, rather just a touch of fighting talk from Kenny.

Walberswick is about as useful as a trophy cabinet at Carrow Road.

Not too often but this time I agree Walberswick. Regarding Stearman, one way or another I do not think Kenny Jackett,s desires come into the equation.

A manager saying he wants to keep someone is susally the first sign they are about to be sold. "it wasn't me guv, it was the Finance director made me do it!"

Wallberswick, may I remind you that last season, had we had MM all season we most probably would have made the play offs and would if the season started and ended whilst he was here!! Stuff your negative remarks and go support someone else, once a blue always a blue no matter what!!!!

algarvefan -frankly that is pure speculation. If we'd had MM at the start the situation would have been completely different.

itfc, not often I agree with your posts but you've said exactly what I was thinking as I read yet another negative post from walberswick. just go support some1 else if you cant see past being negative all the time. whilst we don't wanna lose fans, fans like you ,itfc can do without.

ITFC1981: You are right about Walberswick. He is like a trophy cabinet at Carrow Road. Empty vessels make the most noise!!

I do hope Stears signs for us. MM and TC will be a big influence. Lets hope!!

Not sure Walberswick deserves all the negative - he wasn't criticising Mick nor denying Mick's ability (at least not on this occasion).

Assuming I understand him correctly then I agree with him .... I think that all he is saying is that we need to have the ability to buy who Mick wants - or we will not do as well as we could. We used to blame the Olympic man who liked painting turnstyles, now we blame ME direct - but let's hope that Mick DOES get who he wants ... because like others have said, Mick is certainly good at getting the best out of people at this level.

Surely no ITFC fan would want any less ??

Sign Stearman and Henderson. Put Cresswell on a new contract and put the cheque book away. Have everyone there for day one training and keep an eye open for any bargains that might come along. Don't pay up either Chops or JET and if no interest then make do until this time next year. Stay patient looking for the young creative midfield talent (wingers especially) many of us would like to see and give Hewitt a go at Right Midfield during pre-season. All within budget and 90% of the squad will be the same as 2nd half of last season which I think can't be understated.

so stage 1 of bumping up the asking price of a player by Wolves eh! They cant hope to keep him so by stating publicly they want to keep him helps push the price up especially given thta he 's got a year left on his contract.

If we get Stearman , he will be the last player we sign before the ko , as this haggling will go right to the wire.

Not good enough to help stop their slide into the first division, but good enough it appears to help them get back into the Championship. Nah ! As previous posters have said, a ploy to jerk up the price.

Walberswick - going for bosmans hasn't served ITFC too badly so far has it? Skuse, Tabb, Murphy, McGoldrick (as far as we understand). With so many good players out of contract this summer, I don't think it makes us a dreary club to be going down this road at all. With MM's track record of performing well on small budgets, I don't see the need to moan. Some people amazed by this and don't understand why, it's not like Financial Fair Play hasn't been made obvious to people. Important to be careful what you wish for, especially in the light of the silly sums we've lost when we have spent big (likes of Norris, Leadbitter, Martin, Priskin to name a few). There are some good players out there, and I think you'll find the vast majority of Championship sides will be/ are doing things this way this summer.
