McCarthy Has Potential Targets in Mind
Saturday, 24th Aug 2013 06:06

Boss Mick McCarthy says he has potential targets in mind should he lose highly-rated left-back Aaron Cresswell or any other member of his squad to another club before the transfer window closes on Monday 2nd September.

McCarthy says managers always have possible replacements in mind: “You have to know where there might be a left-back or whatever it might be, a centre forward or a midfield player. Of course we do.

“We have scouting systems in place and we’d have potential targets, whether to sign somebody or a loan deal.”

While the Blues boss says the club has received no offer from Crystal Palace for Cresswell, who is also believed to be interesting Everton, while Southampton, Fulham, Wigan and Blackburn have also been linked, he concedes that all players have their price.

However, if and when a bid comes in for Cresswell, or anyone else, he won't be the one weighing up whether to take it: “You’d have to speak to Marcus. He’ll be the one who decides whether the price is right, not me.

“But there’s not been a bid for him. We end up talking about Cressy and there’s not been a bid. It’s cock-eyed that.

“But if you’re asking me a generic question, of course you have to have people in place. However, the deal has to be right for everybody as well.”

McCarthy ponders whether Cresswell would accept the sort of terms which are likely to be on offer at Selhurst Park if the Eagles did make a move: “If anybody was going to Crystal Palace, if it was Cressy, I would have thought they’d be signing him with a relegation clause in it because that’s what teams do.

“He might see himself as better than that, he would want to go to a team that wouldn’t want that.

“It’s not as cut a dried as it seems, there are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes. And I haven’t heard a thing and I think Palace have got decent players at left-back anyway.”

He added: “Am I afraid of losing Cressy? No, because that’s what makes the football world go round. I certainly don’t want to, I can’t give him any higher praise, it would dent what we’re trying to do and I’d have to go and get somebody else.”

Am now getting slightly concerned with this. I really don't want us to sell Cresswell, we won't replace him full stop. The money will be used to pay Tranmere their bit and the rest to balance the books. I know we are a selling club as most championship clubs are. But don't sell our best player now we need to build around him.

That's right.

I would prefer if MM did not feed into any speculation here.

However, if selling was the only way to get other types of players into the squad... Well, otherwise deal with what you've got and focus on that.

It does sound to me that Mick is trying to drum up a bit of business. Maybe he has been told that he can have all the money to buy replacements?

Yes, I am worried about this and have been for some time. If there was serious intent to improve and get away from this quagmire we would draw a line and refuse to sell anybody we needed. I question what MM is saying. If he is prepared to sell why give Cressy a longer contract and an increased salary other than to increase a seling price because, if he is satisfied with a new person, that person would mosst probably start on a lower salary. The statements over a long period of time are not ringing true. In addition why does he keep up the advertising campaign? MM please shut up and get us playing good football with our own players.

I can 100% guarantee it'd be Stephen Ward from Wolves, and he's half the player Cressy is. Think we'd end up signing Stearman too.

If mm is asked about cresswell he is going to comment , and its a pretty honest answer , if he gets sold then so be it , we find another left back and move on , whats the big deal?

This quote was in reply to questions Brenner Woolley asked Mick saying had there been any interest in Cressy & was he worried about losing him. If you look at the quote in reply to that then it's just an honest answer & not in my opinion anything to worry about.
He will be asked the question up until window closes & again in January. It doesn't make it any more or less likely that Cressy will be sold

Michael11, would that be the Stephen Ward who signed a season long loan at Brighton last week?

Because he was asked a question at a press conference as manager of this football club and there's nothing to shirk away from billblue? I'd have been more concerned if he'd said 'no comment' to be honest!

He also said that he won't make those decisions, ME will so not sure how you've found another excuse to have a pop at MM in this article!

Of all these sides interested, Everton are the only real threat Nd Leighton Barnes is going nowhere so I don't see much risk in this speculation. Palace? Going down so why bother. Wigan and Blackburn? Please! No chance. Fulham and Southampton? Maybe but would be first choice!?

As Ive already said on here. Cresswell will not be here much longer. A thing we have to accept. If we get a very decent fee for him Im no longer bothered tbh. In MM we have a proper manager that is already one step ahead of the game and he will bring in a very good replacement. Of that I have no fears.

we really need to keep Cressy, but reality and ''club policy'' will mean that he probably will be sold. The club has no money, and temptation will be too great. Its sad ,and one of the reasons ITFC are stuck where we are .Big Mick is a good manager, capable of getting Town up, but he will have his work cut out on the shoestring budget he has .We need players like Cresswell if we are going to achieve promotion, but as soon as we have a player who has what it takes he is sold .Its not Micks fault, but he is the person who,s job is on the line if things arent going well, we havnt got off to a good start again this season, dont suppose it will be long before the deluded start calling for his head .
