FAI in No Rush to Appoint New Boss
Thursday, 26th Sep 2013 10:19

FAI chief executive John Delaney says his organisation will take their time before naming the successor to former Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni, who left the job by mutual consent earlier this month. Blues boss Mick McCarthy remains the second favourite to return to the role he previously occupied between 1996 and 2002 — with his odds down to 2-1 with some bookmakers - behind the odds-on Martin O’Neill.

Earlier this week the FAI named U21s boss Noel King caretaker-manager while the appointment process is ongoing.

Delaney told RTÉ Sport that the FAI has never been in any rush to put the new man in place: “I don't think the time pressure was ever there.

"Our next competitive game of real importance is September in 12 months’ time when we play our first game in European Championships qualifying.

“I think it is important we get the right man in. The FAI could appoint one of 20 people today. There have been lots of applications and interest. I think it is better we take our time and make the right appointment.

“We took a lot of time the last time to appoint Giovanni Trapattoni and it turned out to be a very good appointment for us, particularly over the first two qualifying groups he managed us for.

“We have decided to asked Ray Houghton and Ruud Dokter, our high performance director from Holland, to go to the market, analyse the market, come back to the board [with] what they think could be a shortlist for the next Ireland manager.”

It’s reported that the FAI is yet to make an approach to O’Neill with stories earlier in the week claiming that the former Celtic, Leicester and Aston Villa was seen as a less attractive proposition without his one-time assistant John Robertson working alongside him.

Reports this morning claim O’Neill himself may be hesitant about taking the Irish job as he could also be keen on a return to club management. The former Northern Ireland international has been out of work since being sacked by Sunderland in March.

Amongst those also believed to be interested in the job are Hector Cuper, who was Inter Milan's manager when they faced Town in the UEFA Cup in 2001, and former Italian international keeper Walter Zenga.

McCarthy said recently that he believed O’Neill was a “shoo-in” for the job and admitted that he would like to return to the role at some point in his career.

He said he wasn’t sure how he would respond if he were to be approached now: “If somebody does ask me the question, what will I do? I haven’t got a bleeding clue.”

To be honest, I'd like to see Mick leave. Why didn't he get us to the play offs last season? Yet more mid table mediocrity like the last 10 years. Would be delighted if he took the job - I think that Mick is leading us towards a relegation battle this year with a poor squad.

Bring back Paul Jewell please - much better with the players, and greater track record than Mick.

As much as I like MM and the fantastic job he did here last season, long term he is not the right man to take this club forward. I wish town would scrap this 'lets get promoted next season, consolidate this year's mentality. I'd love a young up and coming manager to come in and implement themselves to the club; from the under 8's to the first team we should breed the same style of football, turn the club into a family, use the system at Ajax as an example.

Why is Delaney in no rush? Surely the longer a manager is in charge ahead of the Euro qualifiers the better!? If he's in place before this World Cup qualifying is done, it also gives him a chance to look at his squad in competitive fixtures!!? Unless he feels there's no-one suitable at all at the moment...?

I think a statement is needed sooner rather than later from Mick or the club so we can put an end to all this speculation one way or the other...it's far too unsettling for our club, our players & our supporters to hear MM constantly linked with the Irish job.

If he wants the Irish job then he needs to come out & say it for the sake of both parties or say he's not interested once & for all..Mick's usually very straight talking but on this topic he just keeps batting it to one side.

Reading between the lines, does this mean that they are waiting for Micks contract with us to run out? Meaning no compensation to pay and still several months to prepare for qualifiers next September. To my mind we have this season with Mick only!

i like mick but kind of agree with mr evans above its fine for now but when mick leaves one way or another i think the ajax system he mentions would be a good example to follow.getting the team playing beautiful football for better for worse and the club having a defined pass and move attacking style would be lovely.
swansea have managed to define themselves along similar lines so why cant we

Crowman, that's exactly what i was thinking. They'll look at hiring a manager when they see who's still in a job at the end of the season

I think Martin O'Neill may be waiting for Chris Hughton to be sacked at Norwich then maybe Chris Hughton would take the Ireland job? Stranger things have happened.

Also PEOPLE SHUT UP WITH THE 'AJAX SYSTEM' they have the money to be able to do that, and play in CL every year, we can only just about afford to strengthen our first team (all free transfers last time) let alone waste money on our academy atm wait till we go up to do that

Please mr o 'neil take the bloody job any sane person can see that mick and tc have done an amazing job and i think we are not very far from being a really good side.if he is backed by mr evans i feel we can make the playoff, all these people who keep going on about attractive football need to a go and see a game for themselves and form their own opinion we are not long ball all the time . All the people saying we are crap either never go to matches or are deluded thinking we should be playing like real madrid or are still living in the 1970's/1980's thinking our manager is still bobby robson, that was 30 odd years ago you cretins you cant keep harping on about that golden era 'the truth is we probably will never be that successful ever again( unless we get taken over by abramovich or saudi billionares)

Lightningboy - I don't think it is unsettling anybody apart from a few of the fans. The players are professionals and used to the managerial merry-go-round. I'm sure Evans and (probably) the MDs know what the options are. McCarthy is not a man who leaves jobs at the drop of a hat. As he's said, he would like the Ireland job at some point, but for now he's busy.

Re a couple of posts above, McCarthy's contract runs until the summer of 2015.

If his contract runs until 2015 summer he should stand up and say he isn't interested in the Ireland job if he had real commitment here. He so obviously would go if it was offered to him, we need a manager who will stay and build like Burley did.

Come on Mick stand up for Ipswich, I want you to stay!!!!

The 'Ajax system'! Lol.

You seem confused. Sheepshanks isn't in charge any more. We aren't owned by a Town fan that cares how we are doing in 5, 10 or 25 years time and has the future of the club at their heart.

We are owned by a multi millionaire with no affiliation to ITFC before he bought us. He is only going to be concerned with reaching the Premier League and making his money back. A degree of long term thinking may be a couple of seasons.

Regardless of what we want for the future of our club you can be sure it differs greatly from Evans. What does he care if we went up this year, he sold us for whatever price and then we went down 10 years running.

He only cares about us while we are under his ownership. Passing football, youth development and a family club are things we care about but they don't necessarily equal success in his eyes.

Come on guys let all admit we've got one of if not the best managers in this division. Certainly the best we've had at Portman Road for many years. All those who want him to leave for the Ireland job must need their heads testing or they really want ITFC to fail.
Mick and TC are a great partnership and even the players are saying this when they join the club. Most managers would have buggered off if they knew the budget Mick has been given this season, I think Mick has done wonders considering, all we need is a bit more luck in front of goal and all the negative people on this site will hopefully disappear and go and post on the NCFC forum instead.

I believe MM will take this job, which may help us become more of an attacking side, less of a defensive mediocrity we are now.

StowTractorBoy added 12:57 - Sep 26
It is pretty obvious to me that Mick wants the Republic job otherwise he would come out and state otherwise. He hedged around the many questions Radio Suffolk put to him and never once categorically stated he did not want the job and that he will be at Ipswich for the duration of his contract. As for getting an up and coming young Manager in, that is easier said than done. In my opinion we are very fortunate to have MM here and lets make the most of it while we can - lets not forget he performed a minor miracle keeping us up last season and for this I will be forever grateful to him. I for one want him here for the full length of his contract.

Fat_Boy_Tim added 13:16 - Sep 26
People have to grow up a bit, MM can't say he want's the job because it burns his bridges here and he may still not get it and he can't say he doesn't want it because he does at some point in the future and turning it down now would look bad when that time came around. I think he knows that the FAI can't afford the payoff to Town and so for the above two reasons is saying nowt!
