Town Made Barnett Approach
Thursday, 9th Jan 2014 13:10

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has revealed that Town made an enquiry regarding former loanee Tyrone Barnett prior to his switch to Bristol City yesterday.

McCarthy made the 28-year-old one of his first Town signings when he joined on loan in November 2012 but the former Crawley frontman’s spell was curtailed by a posterior cruciate ligament injury a month later after only two starts and one sub appearance.

“Mick McCarthy spoke to us about him, he spoke to Mick, but Mick only wanted to take him on loan,” Fry told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

“But Bristol City came in, they only wanted to take him on loan, but he’s been there for a week talking about things and he’s gone there on loan until June 30th with a view to a permanent deal on July 1st. I think it suits all parties.”

Barnett may have been viewed as potential cover for Daryl Murphy, who has been suffering with a thigh strain and was due to undergo a scan earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Hull City winger Cameron Stewart, who had been linked with a loan to the Blues amongst a host of other Championship clubs, has joined Leeds United having recently completed a spell at Charlton.

The 22-year-old has moved to Elland Road on an initial 93-day loan and will sign permanently on a three-year deal in the summer.

Thought he looked a good player before his injury.

Very odd given the number and of strikers we already have at the club, Mcgoldrick, Murphy, Nouble, Taylor and SEB and arguably he isn't better than any of them.

I like Barry Fry but can not keep his mouth shut when it comes to transfers etc... I don't understand the relevance of saying Ipswich were in for him. Why not just say " another club " or not say anything at all.

MM knows what he's doing, but as I look at it, up front is one of the places we should be ok right now, so no great shakes missing out there. Perhaps a RB?

Creative midfielder would go amiss MIck me old mucker !

What! Very surprising given the 5 forwards we currently have & Jack Marriott sent out on loan. I hope it doesn't signal a move away for Taylor, as I think the balance up front is good now with different options.

A good player and potentially a better option in the Murphy/Nouble role. Would not have complained had we got him and it doesn't mean we're not looking for a RB or a creative midfielder. You can only get the players available.

Christ. Teams like Huddersfield are getting linked with Nakhi Wells while we're going for Tyrone Barnett. Time to show some ambition if we're to stay where we are.

Michael11, After speaking to my Bantam mates it's been evident Wells has been poor since he's been linked with other clubs & if he does move the word is he wants to stay in the north.

I think this is Mr Fry generating a bit of publicity for himself. I guess Mick could have asked about his availability just in case we lose one of our big guys like Murphy and need a quick replacement but probably not as a long term replacement for any of our front 5, especially as we're joint 3rd top scorers in the league.

I'm confident MM is looking at a defensive player to bolster numbers as we've been very lucky injury wise and a flair player in the middle to give us a different option

Bit naughty of Baz to let this info out... To be fair to the player, he's looking at his longer term future and if he looks at our striking options, he may have been daunted. Plus, although I thought he looked okay the few times I saw him in a blue shirt, maybe an oportunity at a League 1 club with the option of a permanent contract is a safer bet for the player?

I expect Bristol City outbid us Evans and MM OUT

Strange one , as we have plenty of options up front and dont think he is much different to Murphy and Nouble.
The Alan Judge call is a better one . Loan deal to see how he gets on ??

Looks like we're too slow this time. At the moment we only have two fit forwards plus Taylor who I feel is more of an attacking midfielder (we badly need).
I'd have signed him at start of season as he looked good when we loaned him. Clearly Murphy is struggling and with Marriott not ready for MM (I disagree as he looks hungry and full of goals, just what we need) so I expect loan soon. It would be great if Spearman rejoined but like many I would put attacking midfielder as no 1 priority as too many of our current team prefer to pass sideways and backwards! It was dreadful performance against Preston and showed we have no depth in the squad.

I agree with the other poster. FRY loves to hint or say what other clubs have been doing in the background. Why ? whats he get out of it ? Embarrase MM so he has nouble and Murph knocking on his door saying why are you trying to get a similar player in .

For the people saying about judge I think he has joined brentford on loan for the rest of the season. Maybe league 1 is his level. Id go for someone like paul gallagher. Always rated him and cant believe he dropped down to league 1. Good winger from set pieces and can cross the ball really well

WE need wide players that threaten the final third .Leeds have just signed a left mid and a right mid of real quality for peanuts. Lets see who finishes higher.

Same old story at transfer time in our club, why do clubs get there players in no problem and we seem always have issues surrounding our targets.Huddersfield ,leeds and the likes do there buisness .Again something wrong behing the scenes at our club we end up with 2nd and 3rd choice singings .

Bakary Sako and Franck Moussa would do nicely

NoelTheDub - fair comment in the past but you cant really level that at MM, so far he has been quick in his signings and without it leaking out. Who knows what is going on at the minute behind the scenes.

Would suggest Murphy might be out for a while which is worrying.

Glad we didn't get him though, means Mick might be forced to play Taylor, and I didn't rate Barnett t much when he was here. He as okay.

Leeds are owned by an Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector - totally different league when it come to funds - Middle & Far East owners will throw money at clubs for success - Forest , Leicester , QPR and parachute payment clubs like Burnley have pots to spend
We have 12 years in the Championship behind us - we are sitting amongst those clubs who have far bigger resources than us - MM has to be pretty shrewd in the market as he has been !! Anyway Cameron Stewart - I am not convinced - lets judge at end of Jan
Leeds are in free fall -( Rochdale- funny!!) if they lose any more BM is out the door !
