McCarthy Wouldn't Stand in Cresswell's Way
Saturday, 3rd May 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he won’t stand in Aaron Cresswell’s way if Premier League clubs come calling and make Town the right offer this summer. The Blues manager has repeatedly stated his view that Cresswell is the best left-back in the Championship.

“Cressy might go because there will be people interested in him,” McCarthy admitted. “And I’m not one of those that’s going to say ‘He’s not going anywhere’ because that’s bullshit because he deserves to play there, and if it’s the right offer we’ll have to talk to him about it.

“What I don’t want to do is lose his heart and mind by denying him the opportunity to go. And we’ve got a great replacement in Tyrone Mings.

“We’ve got Ando, we’ve got Tabby, we’ve got Luke Hyam, Woody, Skusey, Didz, Murph and Frank Nouble.

“If they all come back [for pre-season], it’s probably the team which started at the beginning of the season. We’ve got the nucleus of that solid team which has been so good this season, and then we’ll have to add to it.”

Scouts from Newcastle United, Southampton and West Brom were at the recent 2-2 home draw with AFC Bournemouth again running the rule over Cresswell, who was recently named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

The trio are amongst several Premier League clubs to have watched the 24-year-old in action on numerous occasions this season with the Magpies and Saints both subsequently reported to be ready to firm up their interest with summer bids claimed to be in the region of £4 million.

Fulham have also been regular visitors to Portman Road, while Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, West Ham, Hull City and Everton have all been linked at one time or another. Aston Villa made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

Cresswell, currently joint-top of the Championship assists table with 13 along with Nottingham Forest’s Andy Reid, signed a new Town contract until the summer of 2017 in December having been linked with a move to the top flight during the last four transfer windows.

If the Liverpudlian were to move on this time around his former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him after his switch to Portman Road in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

With Town adhering strictly to the Financial Fair Play rules, McCarthy is unlikely to have much of a transfer war chest at his disposal this summer unless a current player is sold for a significant fee.

It is absolutely clear now that Mick's only chance of having a transfer kitty for fees will come from sales income, but even then, how much of what comes in will he get? With the sell on clause for Tranmere & an undoubted requirement for some income to go against running costs or debt, it's hard to see more than £1.5m of the suggested £4m fee for Cresswell going on the budget for new players. Even with possible additional nominal fees for Taylor & Loach, it wouldn't leave us competitive for good 'in contract' players, especially as we now need: new keeper, right back, left back, creative central midfielder, attacking winger and a finisher-type proven striker as an absolute minimum. Maybe Richardson & Hensall can fill 2 of those requirements on frees, but if they weren't considered good enough to get games this far, they are unlikely to improve us in those areas next season; & we need improving. Like many I was disappointed that SEB hasn't come good for us as I saw a fully fit front line of SEB & McGoldrick being awesome next season. He needs replacing as Dids isn't a pacey get on the end of it finisher, but would compliment such a strike partner. Jack Marriot clearly isn't there yet and we need to get off to a good start if we are to be automatic promotion or top 6 contenders. He can be a very dangerous option off the bench though, when defenders are tiring. Murphy & Nouble are obviously staying too.

Why do so many bury their heads in the sand about our finances. We have to sell to break even. Difficult times, we have to start balancing the books in order to still gave a sustainable club. We have gambled in previous seasons and its not MM fault that the money before his time was in many cases badly spent. He has done a good job in pushing us forward this aeason spending nothing on fees, how many other clubs can say the same? All the clubs around us have spent money during the season. We need to look a lot at match day income, this is falling with attendances giving the manager even less money to work with. Roughly £0.5m for every 1000 spectators.

This is getting on my t*ts now. Why don't he just say he's available! The poor boy must be wondering if he's really wanted. Stop touting him mick and if it happens then so be it.

Mick stop trying to drum up interest for god sake. The fact he is watched regularly by prem scouts shows there are prem teams interested and all your doing is making us look desperate!!!! Either that or why dont you say to the faceless one, why dont we actually keep cressy and you back me with funds anyway based on my performance this year!!! Billy davies as much of a whinger as he is, was always at logger heads with the board regarding funds and to me mick just seems to take it. Light a rocket up ME's arse and see what happens

It's Evans who will decide what happens with Cresswell - and I think we know what that decision is!

Lets hope its 5 million plus then regency blue!!! We owe tranmere money kn top and he is contracted till 2017, PFA team of the year and joint top assists. If it's less than 4 due to the drumming up of interest i shall be peeved

McCarthy I think we all now by now Cresswell is for sale and no reasonable offer will be refused.

For crying out loud try to keep him for one more season and the Prem club he could be playing for is a club you might have heard of called IPSWICH.

If you doubt your ability to achieve that perhaps it is you who should GO.

But we fell short this season. We need new players and they won't arrive without funds from a significant transfer fee such as the sale of someone like Cresswell

Cresswell is also at the stage of his career where he needs to test himself in the Premiership and we don't want a sulking left back on decent wages

Just go Cressy, can't bear to see this any more

SHUT UP MICK!!!! It's obvious he will be leaving this summer now, your desperation is only lowering his price tag.

Town did the same in the past by selling the lije if Dyer and Sedgley. We onto get promoted on the 3 players brought in from the sale if the latter. Cresswell is going to be cashed in snd Mick will use the money to finalise his squad. Nothing wrong in that. It makes a change that the club has control of its assest instead of the ususl player leaves for bugger all.

Onwards and upwards. In Mick we trust.

Should we just transfer list him and be done with it?

Aaron must be fed up with this too, perhaps he is happy at Ipswich?! Until a bid is accepted he just has to focus on the blues - not a bad team to develop at!

MM can't move him on quick enough. I'd be delighted for the lad to get a good contract at a decent prem team.

Still, trying to drum up interest is a shrewd move.

We will need to replace his assists. Can't see mings adding the attacking threat.

Sign a cracking winger and creative midfielder with the cash.

Have to agree with goldieblue. The more mick goes on about it, the more desperate it makes us look!! We are sposed to be in the driving seat!!! He is our player. We owe tranmere money on top of what we get and I have a feeling mick wont get the entire amount of any transfer and it will find it's way to ME's back pocket

I don't get all these moans about MM trying to drum up interest. I suspect he was asked a question about whether Cressy might attract interest over the summer and just replied as honestly as he can as usual. He has not been transfer listed like Taylor and Loach.

Cressy is a quality left back and if he does go ( which seems pretty certain ) he will be missed much more than people think. Mings will be a decent replacement but will need a few seasons to reach the standard that cressy set. And considering it means its another job for Mick to try and find a backup in the window. But if it seems to be the only way that Mick can get some money to try and bring in other players that we desperately need, I don't think he really has any choice. Apart from Cressy there really isn't anyone else we can let go for a decent amount.

I think we should be rejoicing we have a player somebody else wants
AC was a great buy by PJ and well done to him
Some weeks I watch his runs and overlaps and nobody looks up and sees him
He works his socks off and defensively he has saved us many a time
Two of the last ditch tackles at Watford afew weeks back were excellent , covering in the middle
We need the money , end of , no sell no money - I feel for him as he probably has enjoyed his time here , in the area and you could see how upset he was after Watford and Bournemouth
He will go down as a very good Town player and I hope he goes on to fulfill his great talent in the Premiership - I fancy Palace may come in for him though he may be a straight swap for Shaw at Soton
Thanks Cressy and enjoy the day!!

There are a lot of quality left backs around atm, so really don't see where cresswell would fit in at one of the pl teams now. He's a great player for us but I think were he to leave he'd end up being a benchwarmer at the britannia.

We need to keep him and show our intent through quality. As people have said, we'd maybe only have £1m to put back into the squad, which to my mind would leave us with a really uninspiring group. Quality playmakers/attacking midfielders are as we all know seriously expensive. Tabb is the best example of MM's idea- how can we call ourselves playoff candidates for next year when we have a team of tabbs who have no attacking intent or glimmers of quality?

Keep Cresswell. Don't 'strictly' adhere to FFP- we've already seen the 'punishments' dished out to bigger clubs, and ME could get away with spending a few million now to push us further next season.

I'm in favour of stability and generally abiding by the FFP principles (which the club could do a lot more if they were to market games/events better), But it's no wonder we have this 'nice club' reputation - why are we trying to flog players rather than buying potential pl talent? Other teams look like they have nous in the markets and that's, for me, a part of a pl mindset. We've been far too nice, honest- giving journeymen huge salaries for a sleepy suffolk retirement.

We need to be far more aggressive on the field and off it , too.

Why dont you fight to keep Cressy, Mick? He is one of our best players but it seems as if Mick dont rate him that highly.
