Lawrence Training at Colchester
Wednesday, 20th Aug 2014 11:03

Midfielder Byron Lawrence is training with Colchester United and is set to feature for their U21s at Sheffield United this afternoon.

Lawrence, 18, broke through into Town the first-team squad as a 15-year-old when he was an unused sub in the 2-1 Carling Cup defeat to Northampton in August 2011.

He made his Town debut as a sub on the final day of the 2011/12 season in the 3-2 victory at Doncaster but is yet to add to that senior appearance.

The midfielder, who is contracted until the end of the season, is currently some distance from the first team with younger players such as Teddy Bishop having moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

Lawrence, who joined the Blues from Histon as a schoolboy, is also expected to play for the U’s U21s against Crystal Palace next week.

Phil any idea if this is a loan or with a view to a perm move?

Not sure, some way from the first team so wouldn't entirely be a surprise to see him move on permanently.

Sad, but not terrible news. IF a loan, may be what he needs.
If not, good luck to him, hopefully he makes it

He will never make it as he is only about 4ft 11"..........the game I saw him recently at Chelmsford City just passed him by.

Yet another one of our youngsters who showed so much early promise struggling.
These youngsters need games so a move more than likely.

Whatever happens in the future..." Good Luck "

Yep depressed - agree - he was next big thing ?but shows how from 15 to 18 - a big phase in a lads life - with other things going on - it can fall away so easily
Just look at our Youth Cup winning team of few years back .
It would be great to add another Hyam to the team and maybe Marriott will be that man ?

Agree with blueherts - but if youngsters aren't given a chance in the first team then this is what happens. Wonder what would happened if players like Lawrence had been played rather than the long list olf hasbeens or loanees we saw under Keane and Jewell.

What's the latest in Collison?

It will be good for him to get regular games, Colchester is not too far away. Im sure he will be closer to first team there than he is at Town.

Would be sorry to see him go as other have said but he needs experience at this stage.

Being realistic here, he's about 2foot 6 tall very unlikely to fit the McCartney mould.unless they stretch him so he doubles in size.

I don't think Mick has a problem with youth or size. There was a period under royle where most of the first team were over 30 and bar 2 over 28. Look at who he signed. Williams, tunicliffe, henshall, nouble, mcgoldrick, Mings, bajner,, Stewart etc etc. Most young and under 30 plus only a couple of the others over 30. He clearly doesn't however want to either throw the kids in before they are ready and ruin them or play them for the sake of it.

Shame if he's not made the grade after showing promise at a young age. Look at mceachran at chelski, he made more first team appearances and international appearances than Lawrence but he also has been unable to make the final grade. Even Wiltshire is struggling to fulfil his promise. It's the English leagues-succeed immediately or get replaced

He is not good enough. It really is very simple.
