Chambers: We Must Cut Out the Soft Goals
Monday, 25th Aug 2014 06:00

Skipper Luke Chambers says Town need to cut out the soft goals having conceded four in their last three games. Norwich’s winner in Saturday’s East Anglian derby at Portman Road followed very preventable goals in the defeat at Reading last weekend and two in the draw at Birmingham on Tuesday.

Although replays showed that goalscorer Grabban was offside when Alex Tettey headed back into the area following a corner, the opportunity came about due to a mix-up between keeper Dean Gerken and midfielder Cole Skuse.

The pair left the ball for one another with Skuse having apparently reacted to a call of ‘keeper’s’ which manager Mick McCarthy revealed didn’t come from Gerken .

“It was disappointing to lose to a goal from a set piece,” Chambers said. “We need to learn from this. We can’t afford to give chances away.

“It was a soft goal to concede and one we work on defending day in day out, so it is particularly disappointing.

“It is not the first time of late and we need to cut these out. It is a little phase we are going through and we need to get through it.”

Overall, the 28-year-old felt the derby was a close match with the Blues having opportunities of their own: “There was not too much between the teams, it was an even game.

“There were chances for each side and we could have scored. We had a massive chance with Daryl going wide but we didn’t get the rub of the green.

“The goal knocked us out of our stride. We took the game to them and they were getting breakaways. We always put effort in for every game, not just derby matches.

“We were just lacking a bit of quality and that’s something we need to work on.”

He added: “I’m disappointed for ourselves and fans who turned out in their thousands.”

Despite the derby defeat, the former Forest man says the players will be ready for next Saturday’s match away against his old club’s local rivals, Derby County: “We will pick ourselves up from this and we will be up for our next game.

“The manager told us that we can’t afford to give goals away and then if we do we need to keep our heads.

“We showed last season how we can come back from a goal down and if it happens again that’s what we need to do.”

We also need a creative midfield as well and this is the major problem

Statement of the blindingly obvious ! Gherkin should of dealt with original cross anyway, and agree we desperately need a "play maker" in midfield. Hope I'm wrong but can't see us getting anything v Derby on Saturday either ,

with a goalkeeper and defenders caring more about their facial hair, than the idea of a clean sheet, what chance do we have???

If garden did not call for it surely next question should be why not? If anyone deserves to be dropped next week it is the keeper

WE didnt have the luck of the green, your having a laugh we created one chance when the game should have been over-and if you guys are going to put the same effort in next Saturday let me know so I wont bother going.

It was Chambers poor header which resulted in corner for them. I think he watched different game if he thinks there wasn't much between. Their striker could have scored a hat trick.

Mistakes are mistakes. But if you make one, it matters less if you score two and win. They could try that?

Its disappointing to concede these bad goals but you be 100% sure MM and the defenders will have this sorted out very quickly.

We have had a very tough opening with Fulham, Reading, Bermingham, Norwich & Derby up next. IMO 5 points from these games would be a decent return and a solid opening to a tough start.

I think we will beat Derby 2-1.

Come on, its hardly been a very tough opening few games. Reading fielded a much changed team with several yougsters, Fulham are bottom now, Birminghams fans dont have great expectations for this season. Excuses, excuses. Henshall needs to start matched so we can really attack teams with pace at least in home games - we were much brighter up front once he replaced Tabb. Hopefully Cameron Stewart too will push us forward once he is fit. For many years we had goalscoring midfielders who won us loads of points each season - Warky of course, Peter Morris, Milts, Dozzell, Micky Stockwell. Now - no-one save the odd one from Anderson. Teddy Bishop looks promising and hopefully will get games this season but we must sort this out or top six is looking beyond us again.

eMeM - It was Berra's header that went out for the corner. I'm not sure Grabban was offside - surely Berra and Gerken were playing him on???

I am sorry but these comments tell us a lot about our Captain. He was roasted by the passing of their midfield and the number of times they got balls into the box from our right side was considerable. For the goal it was a keeper's ball, Gerken came then unforgivably stopped leaving him in no man's land. Classic stupid mistake. As some one has already stated we were played off the park by their midfield. Our forward line could not hold up the ball though McGoldrick played well. All in all an embarrassing beating which could and should have been about 5-0.

On the good side there are good players but we need to control our midfield and we just haven't the players to do it. Could McGoldrick play a deeper role ( most creative player we have) ?

I think perhaps dropping some players might wake them up a bit. Chambers hasn't been good enough so far this season, I'd drop him for a game or two for Hewitt who has done well so far. I would've said drop Gerken but having seen the new keeper at Crawley, I don't know if that would be such a good idea. I'd like to see us start with Henshall on Saturday. If MM is insistent on playing Tabb, then put him in the middle and drop either Hyam or Skuse, and get Bishop, Clarke and McQueen on the bench

The worst point for me is that the captain and the manager have both commented saying the game on Saturday was close and both teams had chances ? We had one chance they had several and could have won by a few at a canter without having to work really hard in a derby game away from home !!
Honesty needs to come from the club regarding funds , honesty about why better footballers are being sent away , if the ambition of the club is to get in the playoffs we need to spend or get players in fast or this season will drift away like many previous years but the football on display is so poor attendances will drop without results

We didn't get the rub of the green? Wow. Mick and his players need to stop trying to brainwash the fans into thinking we're anything more than mediocre.

Saturday was not even. Norwich controlled the game for the most part and did it with relative ease with Johnson, Hoolahan and Tettey. We had Hyam who ran his nuts off to be fair, and Skuse who is just pedestrian these days.

Our midfield is cack, but so is our game plan every week and our manager's attitude towards our football is depressing.

Or maybe try something revolutionary. Look to score some goals.
Does anyone really believe that the current philosophy can do anything than take the club backwards?

Get a proper right back in place might help too, Chambers against Redmond and I'd know who I'd put my money on, Anderson didn't help either giving him little assistance.
Amazing to think that our defense became pretty rock solid fairly soon after Mick took over from the debacle of the PJ era (with the loan on Stearman and Chambers, Smith in the center) but now 18 months or so later on if anything it's probably no better if worse, maybe too that the defensive Midfield duo of Skuse and Hyam aren't any better than N'Daw doing that job.

I always said when we signed Berra that would one day create a problem with who to drop in the middle. The Smith/Chambers partnership worked well it was the right back slot that needed addressing. I think it is going to create unease if Chambers is dropped as he is the poor bloke who drew the short straw and was made to play at right back. If Hewitt is not deemed good enough or safe enough why oh why didn't we sign a genuine safe, right back. Ah I know, cos we haven't got any money. What's the point of signing players on loan or on a free if they are not good enough or fit enough to feature in the 1st team. Especially as the present selection are hardly setting the world on fire. I long for the day we sign a player and he's good enough to go straight into the team and is better than what we have got. We are so broke though that is not going to happen.

While their goal was clearly off-side, I don't it is correct to say we were unlucky to lose, they had a lot more chances especially in the first half.

We have a real tough match coming up so I would not think it would be the sort of game to introduce Bartosz Bialkowski

Berra was keeping their player onside after getting into a tangle.

Serious creativity lacking, liked the look of henshall but then any player wko actually went forward would of looked dangerous compared to the players on Saturday. Playing long ball after long ball to daryl murphy while micheal turner is all over him can't help him.

I consistently say how I dislike big sams at west ham style of football but is mick any different

Fair enough we might not have the best players or team at least try play football tho

So Skuse claimed he heard a call but Gerken apparently said nothing? Surely Skuse should know what his own keeper sounds like at this point as opposed to being conned by strikers. Sums up how cr@p Skuse has been this season and should be the first one dropped. Having said that Gerks probably should have called and claimed it and has also looked unreliable this year. As for the close game comments, that is just absurd. Norwich were all over us for 90 mins while putting in little effort. Goes to show how far behind we are from the better teams in this league. Fulham gave us false hope as they can't buy a point. Reading beat us and lost both their games since including a thrashing at forest. Birmingham nearly beat us and they're a very poor team. With no money or any sign of decent players coming in it looks like we may all be in for a disappointing season. Hope I'm wrong of course

....... why not state the obvious Luke, it would also help if we played a proper right back in the right back position - also being capable of scoring an odd goal, or three, as a team would not go amiss either.

blueboy1981 added 13:53 - Aug 25
...... the penny will eventually drop as to how poor a side we really are - we are a long way off being even decent to be brutally honest.

And we are only talking Championship after all.

Dozzells_Bobblehat added 14:55 - Aug 25
blueboy - i disagree totally. Our back line has started the season a bit sloppily but over the season they will be solid (i personally think we need another gk) and our front two are more than decent at this level. We all know the problem is creativity but look at the difference Williams made last year.
Just one signing of that ilk (or even him again ...please) plus the gradual introduction of Stewart and Henshall could make a huge difference.

parhamblue added 15:37 - Aug 25
This is a team that creates few chances and so need to be able to be consistent defensively, as well as putting slightly more of the chances away. That has been the main difference so far this season.

First Brian a Mul spouting same rubbish that MM and his Captain have tried to brainwash us with.
Fulham are bottom of table with no points,Birmingham the next team above us,and Reading who wer soundly beaten on Saturday not far away.It may be a tough start as Ipswich are so poor.
"Game was going nowhere until they scored"(MM);should have added but we were too toothless to equalise or even make a game of it let alone win.I expect however that he has noted the Gerken/Skuse error;but will he play them next time as he has done previously with Nouble and Tabb?
I didn't want Mc Carthy as Manager because of the unexpansive and negative way he sets out his teams to play;but looks like we are stuck with him now for 3 years.
Were in this position (17th) exactly a year ago;but think playing better football then.
Quite where we go from here is anybodys guess;but surely he cannot continue with the likes of Skuse Tabb Gerken Anderson or even Chambo who is being played out of position.Last season a lot of teams played on him as did Norwich.

Once more we have been mislead by Milne hinting that the manager would have the benefit of funds raised by selling Cressy, and it looks like we are returning to the Jewell era of getting in emergency Loans during the season, something I thought McCarthy was going to put a stop to.
Talking of which do we have a recall clause on the loans of Taylor,Skuse or Veseli.I dont expect so as the knowall Yorkshireman says they are not in his plans probably because they are too talented for his run around hoofball team!!!
