McCarthy: Owner's Call on Offers
Friday, 29th Aug 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says it will be owner Marcus Evans’s call to decide whether offers received for his players will be accepted ahead of the closure of the transfer window on Monday at 11pm. Yesterday, the Blues boss said he hoped his phone wouldn’t ring ahead of the deadline, while centre-half Tommy Smith was linked with a possible move to Crystal Palace.

“I’m not in a position to accept a bid or to turn one down,” McCarthy said. “You’d have to speak to Marcus about that, whether there’s a value on anybody.

“That’s Marcus’s call, absolutely, it’s not [down to me]. Mine would be no, absolutely no. And I think that’s the same with Marcus.”

McCarthy, who said yesterday that there could be an addition to his squad on loan before the window closes, is keen to add to the numbers at his disposal and hopes to have injured pair Stephen Hunt and Cameron Stewart back for the Millwall game in a fortnight.

“I’d like Hunty back and I’d like Cameron Stewart back as well, two of the players who haven’t been available to me,“ he added. “That would be a really good start. I’d like reinforcements but nothing’s going to happen between now and Saturday.”

He says that with loanees still available and free agents such as Jack Collison and Darren Ambrose - who play for Town’s U21s on Monday - up for grabs the closure of the transfer window isn’t particularly significant.

“While we’ve got those [options] there’s no need to panic and I think that when Premier League teams get their squads together eventually, that’s the time that they’ll loan somebody out.”

Regarding Collison and Ambrose, he says he’s been pleased with what he’s seen of them in training: “They’ve both trained well, both look fit but it’s a different ball game playing 90 minutes on a big pitch.

“But they’ve both done OK. Neither of them look out of place in training, that’s for sure.”

Collison, who was released by West Ham last summer, and former Blue Ambrose, who left Birmingham at the end of last season, will play in Monday's U21 match against Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road (KO 7pm).

If they do sell smith (which I hope they don't) they should get a bigger fee then Cresswell! He's been with us years.

Wow the deluded fans on here but then again I sit around a few in SAR lower. Fact is getting behind a team isn't going to get us up is it. More fool u if u believe that. Evans is the main problem with is appointment of bad management and MM is trying his best but trying ur best isnt going to keep fans coming to PR is it. Time to wake up we are a poor championship side with a gd manager at this level and we are now facing the FFP which now seems to be a bigger problem/exskuse haha than the £82m that we owe. I for one will happy eat my words and admit if im wrong come play offs if thats the case.

I don't think theres one town fan who isn't a bit worried about the size of our squad at this moment. but some of the comments being made about it are somewhat over the top. looking at it objectively, mm started with a squad of around 20-22 last season, and has again this season. with those who have left either on loan or in cresswells case, permanently, that has dwindled it down a bit. taking into account tho that hunt and stewart have been injured, when they return, we bring in 1 or 2 loans, and, I suspect, if they do ok Monday, sign collision and/or ambrose, then the squad will be back up in numbers again. so hardly a crisis.(not yet anyway). people keep going on about the cresswell money not being used? we've signed 4 players since he went. and before anyone says they were on frees? yes, but they still cost money in signing on fees, etc. peewee. Marcus evans puts money into this club every season. under the ffp(whether you agree with us sticking to that or not), last season the max he could put in as owner was £6m, this season its £3m. but on top of that hes also sponsoring the club through another of his companies. plus he also is able to/ and does put money into the academy. so, no, your comment about no money is totally inaccurate. and before anyone accuses me of being blind to nething being wrong, trust me, ill be the first to complain if I believe it right to do so. agree with everyone who moans about the style of football, and can understand why some would rather not pay out money to watch it. but personally, as a fan, I do put up with it, albeit not without complaining about it, and would continue to do so regardless of where we end up in the league. in fact id still be going if we ended up in the conference. why, u may ask? simple. because im a true fan of over 40 years.(and prob a bit mad too.lol).

The lack of funds might well be a major factor in the success of the team (or lack of it in recent seasons) but we do also seem to have a penchant for some taking very average players on loan deals and, it has to be said, a less than positive playing approach from MM.

Obviously, I do not want Smith to go but, given that Chambers could rekindle his partnership with Berra in the middle, this would be less of a disaster than losing Didzy whose position could only be filled at the moment by Sammon or Nouble.

I hope to jeebus Smith is staying, he is certain to be a captain of Town and could be on his way to being a cult figure.

Id hate to loose Smith but it wouldnt be a complete disaster. We would have Chambers and Berra to fill the CB slots with Clarke as back up. Also Mings can play CB with Parr due to come back and Elliott ready for first team role.

Its one of the few spots we are covered in and wouldnt loose too much balance in the team.

Blue1 yes he does put money in but that fact Rotherham have taken 5 players, cresswells wage which im guessing was at the top end of the budget fair enough taking 3.5m and spending 1.5 on a star player/gamer changer in mid field isnt much to ask is it? And spending the rest of the 1.5m on wages and the last 500k and agent fees. I leave blind faith to others as evans is not leaving the football to people that run the club to those who kinda know what there doing and let evans do what made him his millions in PR not football.

If Evans makes all the decisions why does he employ 2 CE's. Im really confused buy the whole set up what the hell did Sheepshanks get us into. That fool has so much to answer for. How the hell did we go from the club that took the premiership by storm to where we are now. The debt is growing all the time the crowds are dropping the football is the worst in living memory god what a mess. like Bobby on Dallas i hope i step out of the shower and its all been a dream.

This isn't true as I doubt that ME will know how to assess any offers without some input from MM. Plus he'll want to know from MM the impact any sales will have on team!
Lets face it we have an owner that really isn't too involved in driving the Club to success otherwise he'd have more to say or at least give MM the backing to sign better players.
The evidence is that Cressy money is still in the bank so I can only assume that all of that has been earmarked for loanees wages/fees. Other clubs have been busy but MM's silence doesn't bode well for us!

If Mick wasn't satisfied with the situation, he wouldn't have singed a new 3 year contract.

Can we rewind back to just after the Fulham game when everyone was optimistic and everything in the garden was rosy. Can't believe the turnaround in opinions during such a short period of time. I know we are all entitled to our opinions but things are not really that bad. We have a good manager and we have a good owner who lets the manager run the footballing side of the Club. Just go up to the training ground and ask the staff there how the morale at the Club is compared to the previous regimes. All this knocking of Evans is in my opinion crazy. The guy has put sack loads of money into the Club and has backed the bid to continue for Academy One status. He funded the treatment for David McGoldrick so its not just about buying players. Those banging on about Milton Keynes how far have they come in status over the years, regularly finishing outside the top 6. Yes they looked good against Man U but they have stagnated in Division One. Lets wait a couple more weeks when I am sure by then MM will have signed a couple of players. Ipswich Town forever.

does worry me if we sell both Tommy and Dids
You can replace Tommy I suppose put chambers back in the centre alongside Berra where he belongs
Mings can cover at CB, you'd then need to bring in a RB
really couldnt see us selling again, is a bit worrying
where has the cressy fee gone ????
I know im walking on old ground here, but.............
Evans has sewn the pockets up after Keane etc blew it
Mick's words is that of a man that is resigned to this situ for me

Can we rewind back to just after the Fulham game and everyone thought we were playing a Premiership quality side. We have since found out they were the U21 side.

Its amazing how many assumptions are made on here regarding money available. Firstly the west ham fee for Creswell we don't . How much has been spent on henshall, McQuenn, Bru, Bajner, Par, Cameron and bart...and contract extensions. its not just wages there are signing on fees and agents fees and the cost isn't just the initial wages, its over the course of a contract. The fact is, if we were getting 25,000 fans at home games MM would have more cash for transfers. I think the "Knee-Jerk" phrase describes exactly what's going on with town fans on here. As much as we have the right to criticise we also have to admit we are doing so when the team finished higher than we have for 5 years last season and are 4 games into this one. I have faith in MM that he knows what he's doing in this league and I also believe ME has stuck with it longer than someone who didn't care would have. The club looses money every year, so over spending just increases debt anyway. I'd rather have ME running things sensibly than some of the fly by night owners who are self obsessed publicists and don't last the course.

If ME were to leave my understanding is he would take the debt at the last count it is over 80 million pounds. The only way he can retrieve that kind of money is promotion to the premier league. If he continues to sell the best players how in the world is he going to achieve this so what is his motive,he says others have wanted to buy the club i think the only thing stopping him is the debt. Why did he allow Roy Keane to continue and ruin the club selling good players for a song Jordan Rhodes etc and allow him to buy such average players for big bucks that is where the trouble began. He obviously knows nothing about football and put a chief executive in charge who knew even less this was a recipe for disaster.MM in my opinion if given the funds say 5 million would get us promoted but it now is to late to build will now have to rely on loanees but i have faith in him at the moment look where we were two years ago after Jewell.
