Chambo: A Privilege to Captain Town
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2014 10:40

He is not going to reveal exactly what is said but Town skipper Luke Chambers has provided an insight into the team’s pre-match huddle.

Chambers refuses to take his role as captain too seriously and showed a nice line in self-deprecating humour when he confirmed: “I’m the only one who does any talking. No one else says a word — they just look at me as if to say ‘Shut up you idiot’.

“It’s just nice to get together and it’s really the only time we have a little bit of quiet time before the game. I say a few words, either rubbish or inspirational.

“It’s whatever they want to take from it. The lads always seem to respond really well to me and I’ve been privileged to play with them as captain so far this season.

“Sometimes I’ll think about what I’m going to say, for example if I’ve heard something during the week and I make a mental note of it. It could be anything, maybe what another team’s manager has said or what other people have commented about us.

“It’s generally about what’s been happening in the build-up to the game, whether we have to approach it in a different way and the importance of getting off to a good start.

“Some managers have said things about our style of play but nothing seems to affect the group. I’ve never known so many professionals, regardless of whether they are in the team or out of the team, to be on the same page.

“I don’t know if it’s down to the management having instilled that in them or just the characters we are fortunate to have in the squad.

“Everyone wants to do well and knows the job that is expected of them. If they don’t do it the other lads won’t accept it, nor will the management. If someone says something about us we know what we have got to do to beat teams. They can say what they want but we’ll still send them up the road with nothing.”

Firm words from Chambers but to illustrate his point about the squad he cited the example of how Jonny Parr reacted to his first-team recall against Middlesbrough, replacing infected toe victim Tyrone Mings and delivering a five-star performance.

He added: “Jonny has been brilliant for the last three or four years in the Championship and was Crystal Palace’s Player of the Year a couple of seasons ago.

“He was unlucky not to be in the team but when he played against Middlesbrough on Saturday he showed what a good defender he is.

“Their winger Albert Adomah is a top, top player in this league and has been giving people the run-around lately but they took him off at half-time and Jonny will be very unlucky again if he finds himself out of the team if Mingsy comes back at Brentford on Boxing Day.

“There are a lot of options for us at the minute and as I’ve said before, when someone does step out of the team for whatever reason whoever has come in has done virtually the very same job and we just seem to keep moving forward.”

Regarding the Chambers swearing incident. I thought that interview was very inspirational and obviously emotional, seeing as it was all about sticking up for Noel Hunt and what he'd endured at Leeds, a guy who had been with us for only a couple of days. If his huddle talk is anything like that then it should give everyone a lift at the right time

Every good (and successful) club needs a great skipper, in Luke we certainly have one - we all knew he connected with the fans but it is clear that the same connection exists with the players and the managment team too.

I was thinking earlier what a great captain Chambers is and how that is making a huge contribution to the team spirit and togetherness. He has a superb connection with the fans with the fist pumps etc. The last time we got promoted we had a good captain (Holland) and during our worst years recently we had, ermmm...not quite so inspirational figures in the role.

Arguably my favourite ITFC captain since Matt Holland. Players like Carlos Edwards would never gee up the lads or ever show a quarter of the passion that Chambo has. He's a natural leader and wants to win every game desperately. Along with signing Aaron Cresswell, signing Chambo was without doubt the best thing Paul Jewell ever did for us. Keep them fist pumps coming Luke!

I think Chambo has done more than anyone else in respect of bringing the team and the fans together. He plays the majority of his games in what is neither his natural or preferred position but always gives his all.His passion for the club is obvious and that seems to feed back to the fans and brings us all together. There is now a feeling that the club and the fans are one entity rather than two parts and that is largely down to Chambo.

He is a great skipper and find it strange that Forest let him leave

I'm a fairly new fan. Sounds like a level headed, down to earth sort of person. Just right for being a Captain of a team at this level.

Saw him & McGoldrick at Waterloo Stn after the Bournemouth game a few wks ago. Was going to ask for their autographs but my courage did a runner.. :)

Good the way he connects with the fans.

The club is now in gd hands both on and off the pitch. Loved chambo since he came to the club and like others have said he is the best captain since MH. Not only is he a great captain, his passion is truly fantastic as it brings us all together. He is also a very underrated player and someone the kids can look up to as a role model although some would grizzle that he swore. That just shows his passion and love for the club and I for one am proud to have such a genuine guy as captain of our great club!! Keep it up Luke we love u.
