Murphy Wins Player of the Month
Friday, 9th Jan 2015 06:00

Town striker Daryl Murphy has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for December.

The Blues frontman netted six goals in five games during the final month of 2014 to take his season’s total to 17.

The 31-year-old beat fellow nominees Bradley Johnson of Norwich, Bolton keeper Andy Lonergan and one-time Town trialist Harry Arter from Bournemouth to carry off the gong.

The Irish international is the second Town player to win the gong this season with Tyrone Mings picking up the award for September, while Murphy's strike partner David McGoldrick won it in October 2013.

Town boss Mick McCarthy was nominated for the Manager of the Month award but lost out to AFC Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe along with Slavisa Jokanovic of Watford and Middlesbrough's Aitor Karanka.

The Blues won four and drew one in the final month of the 2014, climbing to second in the Championship table, but Howe’s table-topping Cherries won all five of their league games, netting five goals against Cardiff and six at Blackpool.

McCarthy, who was also nominated last month, won the September award.

Nice one! Well done Murph. Reflects your work rate and attitude as well as your goal scoring feats

This is great news for an outstanding player this season.

I'm glad that MM didn't pick up the curse award though, I'm happy for Howe to have the MOTM curse now

Yes Franco I'd noticed that. I don't think he likes not being the centre of attention which is a worry.

What a great video! Shows what a fantastic striker Murph has become.

I think McGoldrick not celebrating very strongly is more down to his frustration of having a dry spell more than anything else. He has been vital in a lot of build up play, that's for sure

Lets hope there is no player of the month curse, just in case I gonna put Dids down for first goal.

What strikes me when watching that video is the variety of his goals. He really does have the lot! Long rangers, headers, dinks over the keeper, scrappy finishes inside the 6 yard box and even going round the keeper!

To buy Murph now would cost a fortune, even at 31. Long may he continue!

@NorthstaNder What I like most about Daryl McGoldMurph is they are the first Town strikers in a long time who will shoot as soon as they have sight of goal- it's paying well

Great credit to TC too - we ought to hear more from him, he is so unsung. Mick says he is right up there with the best coaches and is especially excellent working with the strikers. Town fans are seeing the evidence with our squad and with Murph in particular. TC has been working on Ambroses heading and look at his great looping header at Southampton. And what an advert for race relations - TC and Mick celebrating our goals together. Kick Racism Out of Football & The Race Relations Commission are missing a trick there.

Rfretwell I do not think there is any need for a media stunt out of MM and TC.

No surprise that Howe won MOTM as it seems to be decided purely on number of points won.

Although Bournemouth had a great month smashing in the goals and winning all five games, they did play two of the current bottom three and none of the top six.

We, on the other hand, beat two of the top six and didn't play any of the bottom three. The only points we dropped were in the draw at Bolton, who were on an excellent home run under their new manager.

Hopefully we'll beat Derby tomorrow and start to open up a gap between us and third. I'd be more than happy to see us and Bournemouth pull away at the top rather than a three-way tussle as there was last time when we just missed out under Royle.

He finally realized that he is more than a header. Thinking back to his goal against Fulham in august. It was like watching old brazilian Ronaldo :-)

I guess Murph has also had a couple of rebounds from McGoldrick efforts - that must be a little frustrating for Didz, especially the rebound from the header against the bar against Charlton which looked like he might get to (he wasn't far from Smith for the first goal either) and he had already hit both posts. However, they celebrated together after he finally got his goal. Nothing to worry about IMHO - he just wants to score goals!

Brilliant and fully deserved too. Hopefully he can keep himself fit and firing the second half of the season as he's crucial to where we'll end up finishing.

Very well deserved - been an absolute revelation since Mick took over.
Well done Daryl.

My thoughts entirely Fatboy. But I think the number of goals they scored may have JUST tipped it in Howe's favour, although I think MM should've won.
