McCarthy Searching for Striker
Friday, 16th Jan 2015 06:00

Town manager Mick McCarthy says that although he has started the search for another striker, no new signing is currently imminent. On-loan Derby frontman Conor Sammon left the Blues earlier in the week having had his season-loan spell cut short, prior to joining Rotherham yesterday.

“We’re looking,” said the Town manager. “But we’ve not got one coming in the door yet.”

Asked whether he thought it might be difficult to persuade players to join the club on loan given that David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy are firmly established as the first-choice frontmen, McCarthy added: “Of course, but it’s not an exact science, is it?

“It’s human beings we’re dealing with and you do get injuries, illness, suspensions or you get three or four games on the bounce when it gets a little bit too much and somebody will get a game. It’s got to happen.”

The Blues have previously been linked with various strikers including Leicester’s Chris Wood and West Brom’s Adil Nabi, while McCarthy and his assistant were at the Norwich-Manchester United U21s match last Friday with Jesse Lingard, Will Keane and Nick Powell, a Town target in his Crewe days, all in the Red Devils’ line-up.

McCarthy doesn’t blame Sammon for wanting to move on to get games with his opportunities at Town having been limited in recent months: “When he played the first few games and we played three up front, himself Murph and Didz they were a real handful and he contributed a lot, scored what turned out to be the winner at Wigan, of course,” he said.

“But he’s not had his opportunities, purely and simply because we’ve had the two other Irish strikers playing in front of him and being outstanding.

“And I get that he wants to play and he wants to progress his career and I couldn’t really set about stopping him doing that if he’s going to get games.”

Vardy Newgent Wood unlikely to get games at Leicester. Doyle at Chesterfield. Wells at Huddersfield. We need a poacher. Murph out of sorts in the 2 big TV games, hope it changes tomorrow. Didzy could play behind 2 strikers as he is our most creative player and best passer and could provide for murph and a.n.other

Murphy looked like he pulled his groin in th Derby game and I was surprised he was in the line up for Southampton, maybe he played because Sammon was on the way out.
Let's get back on track at Millwall, hope we don't get a Ollie lash back after he locked his side in the dressing room on Wednesday.
COYB's.

If we do not get 3 points on Saturday, we will need to look very hard indeed at finding someone to come in and liven things up
nugent would fit the bill for me. A strong attacking player and one who would fit in with mm as well.

Quite a few free agents at the moment which makes finding a back-up striker fairly easy.

Just hope we don't end up with Nathan Ellington or someone of that calibre (don't get me wrong: he seems a lovely guy).

Doyle could prove a good bet as Wolves are pretty keen to see him move on.

Nugent or Wood, I really think it will be Kevin Doyle though, I'd love Wells of Eoin Doyle but dont think we will get either as they are out of our price range. Williams back as well would be nice, wishfull thinking?

Got a feeling it might be either Chris Wood or Kevin Doyle. If Palace bring in another striker then it might free up Murray, but he has been playing in their starting 11. Nugent probably wouldn't come here as he knows we don't like him!!!

To be honest, whoever MM and TC bring in, I'm sure they'll bring the best out of them. They've proven this with McGoldrick and Murphs. They do their job so well (Especially with TC seeing as he is a forward specialist) at getting, lets be honest, average championship players to thrive. Murphs has been on loan with us for God knows how many seasons and yes done an alright job, McGoldrick came in on loan and signed permanently and both have found the net so many times under the reign of the current manager and coach when no one else in the league would have given them the chance. In my opinion, whether we get Wood, Doyle, Lingaard or whoever, I have full faith in the staff that they will get the best out of them. Lets not forget Bajner too, I know he hasn't been the most productive for us but against Southampton he look like he got a lot bigger and better, I'm not surprised if the staff have got him working 1 to 1 with Murphs, Bajner needs a hell of a lot of fitness and experiance before he can properly develop but who's to say he's not a blessing in disguise like Mings was with Cresswell? All in all, I have 100% faith and I will support whoever MM and TC bring in and I'm sure we will be back on track this weekend. COYB!!!!!

Powell and Lingard both scored goals at this level last season and must be looking at getting games .
Kevin Doyle hasnt scored goals regularly at this level for more than 6 or so years and would be another SEB in my opinion .
Someone must be lined up as why would we be weakening ourselves at a crucial part of the season with many games ? MM obviously thought Salmon was better than Bajner so why let him go if we haven't got anybody coming in

A 4312 formation Murf with Kevin Doyle and Didsy in behind.Love to see also any 3 from Skuse,Bru,Bishop,Ambrose and a back 4 with Mings and Parr starting.I do think teams will try stop our aerial dominance as for Chambo,Hymn,Tabb and Hunty they do need a break imo. Those lads have given their all and got us to where we are but we can freshen things up as seen in the Saints first game.

We must have som, ebody currently in their team and scoring goals and ready to come in now and do a job, not a has been or somebody elses cast off whom we have seemed to specialise in.

Just what is our price range Mr OWNER----it is your call and get it wrong or do nothing and you get all you deserve.

We also need another midfield player as well who can actually make a forward pass over more than 10 yds and open up defences.

See you all tomorrow--I am hopeful, no more.

Also, who's to say we can't spend some money this transfer window? Obviously a loan would be ideal as it means spending no money, but why not gamble on spending some money on the likes of Wells or another striker? Reason being, if we do gamble on spending money on a striker and if the worst comes to the worst and we don't go up, we will be much more than re-inburst on the likes of Mings or maybe Bishops as regards to transfer speculation and if we do go up I'm sure the new signing would help in a number of ways to getting us to the prem, especially if he's down on a few years contract and they'll be there for next season's push and would have already been in with the squad, again if the worst comes to the worst of course.

Razor - what if the team have a forward currently scoring goals why on earth are they gonna let go of him especially in the January transfer window?

Another experienced striker would probably be the better option, but MM cant guarantee them a starting role so they would sit on the bench and an experienced pro a la Sammon wouldnt be happy with that. Sammon was on £20k a week and I would suspect Derby payed a large chunk of his wages just to get town to take him. Doyle is allegedly on £40k a week so unless Wolves prepared to pay at least £30k of that i think he is too expensive for town. A young striker from Premier League club looks like most likely option, cheaper wages and would be happy to go out on loan to get some experience. Dont see town paying a fee for someone although you never know!

I'd take Nick Powell regardless of any striker coming in because he's a cracking player. Also like Jesse Lingard or Chris Wood.

Nick Powell would be interesting, but isn't recalling Marriott from his loan spell an option?Perhaps a run as the substitute striker coming on some point in the second half might be good for him.

Kirbeister - Didz was banging them in at Coventry when we nicked him. Lower leagues may be the place to go shopping for back-up.

Sorry, Saltwell, you are way off the mark on Bajner, who is totally out of his depth at Championship level - a 6ft 5 inch striker who can't win a header, has no control of the ball on the ground and can't tackle. Even Sammon was a better option off the bench, but that's not saying much. We have to give Noel Hunt a chance, but otherwise, I agree with all the other posters about the likes of Kevin Doyle, Danny Graham etc. The drawback to recruiting a striker of the requisite proven quality is that, as has been said, who wants to come here & warm the bench?

Doyle is valued @ 2million, Wells closer to 5, even if we can afford to pay out I doubt very much its that kind of level. I think Kevin Doyle would do decent job until the end of the season

kevin doyle, really? why does everyone rate him so much. yes in his prime he was OK and that is about it. i would love to look at the lower leagues and find a younger play with a good goal scoring record. if you can score in league one regulary then step up to the championship shouldnt be hard.i want a fox in the box. murphy and dids are amazing but neither one is a poacher and i feel this is what we need, doesnt have to have an all round great game just someone who is in the right place at the right time. eg jordan rhodes, not saying i want him back but in that calibre.

If and that's a big IF we opt for another quality loan striker, there will have to be a promise of game time to tempt them here. It's been said earlier that no one wants to keep the bench warm so squad rotation would have to happen. I notice other clubs around us are very busy with loans/purchases in to their squads and this has worried me over the last few seasons. We either seem to lack the links/friendships with other clubs to be able to entice players here or is it the prospect of being a bench warmer puts them off? If you throw your hat in for someone because you need cover, give them a fair chance to prove themselves.

Nick Powell would be my choice because he's such an attacking minded player, not afraid to run at defenders and has a great finish on him as well!

I think Badger has probably come on enough to warrant being the cover option that Sammon ended up being. In all likelihood I think Mick will just get someone in similar to Sammon just for cover on an extended trial like situation. I can't see many decent young prospects being allowed out on loan to us if we won't give them much game time.
I doubt it would happen, but I'd be very happy to sign Danny Graham, very good at this level and seems like a decent person.
It would be a good move all round. Surely he would have the confidence to think he can break into the team.
Mick will probably be concerned about the lack of back-up, but personally I'm concerned that the lack of competition may, subconcious as it may be, cause a little complacency from our excellent front two. I also worry about McGoldrick staying fit for the entire season (which seems unlikely).
Anyway Mick and Top Cat are best placed to take care of the striker situation.

If Mick gets a striker in they will want to start ,so I assume Didz will go in behind and try to create as its something we very much lack.
