Blues in for Sears
Friday, 16th Jan 2015 12:19

Town are close to completing a move for Colchester United striker Freddie Sears. The 25-year-old has scored 14 goals for the struggling U’s this season.

The former West Ham man is understood to have been at Playford Road this morning to finalise a switch with the deal likely to be done in time for Sears to travel with the squad to Millwall.

Town are likely to be paying a small fee for the Hornchurch-born striker, whose U’s contract is up in the summer.

Sears came through the ranks at West Ham where he eventually went on to make 25 starts and 33 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

While with the Hammers he spent time on loan with Crystal Palace, Coventry, Scunthorpe and Colchester before making his move to the U's permanent in July 2012.

Capped by England at U19, U20 and U21 levels, Sears has scored 36 goals in 81 starts and 28 sub appearances for the U's, including during his loan spell.

The Blues are keen to add one, perhaps two, strikers to their ranks ahead of Saturday’s visit to Millwall.

Long-time target Billy Sharp, who is now with Leeds United, is also understood to be on the wish-list.

People must not right off Bajner, he looked ok when he came on against Southampton, won nearly every header & looked tasty. Maybe not a starter this season but could be ok for next season.

Liking the sound of this young man! Col U probably think that we nick all their players sooner or later. Would like to see the badgers heading of the ball in the box become as good as Tabb/Murphy if we're going to hoof it into the box all the time, might aswell have the 6'6' man on the pitch.coyb

Taking a journeyman 25 year old striker who has struggled for goals until one productive half season in league one... Never gonna work!!

....ah, yes... David mcgoldrick.

Walberswick. Get ur facts right before posting. Sears is neither a loan or a free. While I'm sure it won't be a massive fee we are paying a fee.

@walberswicks nothing like a sarcastic comment to welcome a possible signing, I'm sure you said the same about Noel Hunt too, but was dancing round your living room when you saw the 95th minute winner! Cos I'm doubting you'd have been there, being such a negative "supporter"
The fact that there's been minimal spent on the squad just shows what MM and TC are capable of, rather than the millions pi55ed up the wall by our previous regime
Maybe support the signings, and the work done my the management, you'll be surprised, it'll go a long way!!

Get him signed, then assuming Didz is fit, give him a start vs Millwall and rest Murphy. Give Murph a chance for a break as he's been involved in pretty much every game and allow Sears to bang in one or two against a side that are currently about league 1 standard. Get Sears confidence up from day one and our top scorer a bit of a rest ready for the bigger games in future.

Mentioned this weeks ago also so well happy----right age and working with TC can only improve him.

BIlly Sharp also---that would be a Brucie bonus-----goals will get us up.

Colchester supporters say his way above anyone else in team, and would seem a good signing for us. If he clicks then he could see us home.

Struggled at Colchester last season. Always a good sign that your scoring even in struggling team. If he plays, hope we give him the right service. Not a player to play long balls to. Got a bit of pace. Like J.Rhodes has served his time in lower league, and is in form. Want to see some hungry players with some quality come in, and he fits the bill. MM says with have a small squad. But this small squad is talented and ready to fight all the way. Would always rather this than a large squad (like under keane and jewell) with out the quality. MM trusts his players, and in turn they and us the fans trust him.

Sears and Sharp both worth a punt for differing reasons. Both not without risk.
