Town Topic: The Greatest Derbies
Wednesday, 6th May 2015 10:08

With Town facing Norwich City at Portman Road on Saturday in the first of what are perhaps the two biggest East Anglian derbies ever, we thought it was time to look back at the greatest Blues-Canaries clashes of the past.

What are your favourite memories of previous derbies? Which were the greatest goals? Which victories were the sweetest?

Post your memories/YouTube videos in the Comments section below.

So many stick out for me .

The Ullathorne/Gunn game, the 5-0 win (Mathie/Petta), the beautifully executed own goal by Gary Megson, Simon Milton's winner in extra time in the Simod Cup, but the night I most enjoyed was the 2-0 win on a Friday night when Tarrico & Mason were the scores in front of the North Stand.

God I got hammered that night

Can't remember the year or much of the detail but I went to Carrott Road for a derby not long after they beat us in the Milk Cup Semi Final. We won, a result that sent them towards relegation.....that was sweet revenge.

Has to be the misfiring Bryan gunn. Never laughed so much at a goal involving my own team in my life. Thank you Robert Ullathorne. If I'd have died laughing that day I wouldn't have felt cheated. Also, in more recent times, when I thought idgrown up a bit more :Danny Haynes handball in the last minute at the "noisy" end at carrot road. Was watching at a friends high rise flat and was lucky not to have jumped out of the window...

My first away game, Feb 1968. Brilliant 4-3 win, sad budgies at b(r)eakfast in hotel next morning. Manager Bill McGarry saw way to get promotion later that season.

ive got a couple of favourites

3 - 2 at PR Quinn, Gio (pen) and Stead which pretty much relegated them atmosphere was immense and i also have found memories of winning 2 - 0 at Carrow Road with Fab and Bent on the scoresheet.

Texaco cup final second leg at carrot rd in 73 !! Thousands of Town fans celebrating on the pitch with Bobby and the players me included, happy days, lets hope we can repeat that! I was also at the 4-3 win in 68, wasn't that a friendly or something ?

My first ever game at Portman road 1963ish I was seven
Ray Crawford had a goal disallowed
North stand called the ref an anchor.
Asked my dad what it meant he told me to ask my mother.
Got a thick ear.
Been a blue ever since even though never lived in Ipswich.
Can't wait to travel the 184 miles on Saturday to see another Derby.

The Fab Wilnis and Daz Bent one stands out for me. As well as the one where we basically relegated them to League 1.

However its the one when Danny Haynes scored with his hand. Nothing quite like winning at Carrow Road but it is especially sweet when it quite clearly shouldn't have been a goal!

Saturday cant come soon enough!

Too young to remember most of the classic meetings so probably has to be Danny Haynes' Maradona moment for me. Can still picture Joe Royle celebrating.

I'm with NoCanaries, Haynes handball winner, my first ever visit to Carrow Road! The 3-1 home win when it was 1-1 and Haynes came on to score 2 late goals was also good!

First season of the Premier League. Four days before Christmas. 2-0 win at Carrot Road, Kiwomya and Thompson the scorers. My first away EA derby. I seem to remember the second goal came about 2 minutes from the end and a Town supporter invaded the pitch and gave Jason Dozzell a ITFC bobble hat and he spent the closing minutes playing with it on!.. Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Enjoyed looking at Gunn's 'clearance' again, but it has to be Alex Mathie's hat-trick 21st Feb 1998!

Couple stand out for me - 1-0 away when Thijsen scored and 4-2 at PR with Muhren hitting a belter.

So many memories, the Demolition Derby, Gunn's greatest miskick, Megson's late o.g, but the match that stands out for me is the one in our 1968 promotion season. Played at Carrow Road in February a Colin Viljoen hat trick and so many near misses by both teams, but a final score of Budgies 3 Town 4.
I still remember it vividly 47 years on.

For me it's the 4-3 away win in 1968. And no Floridablue, it definitely wasn't a friendly but a vital game in the old Div 2. 2-0 down after 30 mins, a Viljoen hat trick saw us into a 4-2 lead in front of the Barclay Stand totally taken over by Town fans. 3 months later we clinched promotion. Let's hope history repeats itself.

For the shear noise and atmosphere following Bryan Gunn's howler, that has to be THE derby moment, but for me the best match was the 5-0 demolition derby with Mathie's hat trick.
