Mings Agrees Terms With Cherries in £8m Deal
Thursday, 25th Jun 2015 15:51

Town left-back Tyrone Mings is understood to have agreed a four-year deal with Bournemouth after Town accepted their bid of £8 million, with Brett Pitman and winger Ryan Fraser both set to move in the opposite direction.

Mings has agreed the terms subject to a medical, having held talks with the Cherries this morning, after being given permission to speak to them yesterday.

The deal, which it's understood could potentially rise to £10 million after the usual milestone clauses and includes a sell-on, is expected to be confirmed on Friday.

While Bournemouth striker Pitman is, as reported earlier, expected to join the Blues in the next couple of days in what's a separate deal - a free transfer according to local media on the South coast - Scottish U19 and U21 international winger Fraser is also due to move to Town on loan for the season as part of the Mings move.

Fraser, 21, started his career with hometown club Aberdeen before joining the Cherries in a £400,000 deal in January 2013. Last season the 5ft 4in tall midfielder - who operates on either flank, primarily on the left - made 11 starts and 16 sub appearances, scoring two goals. He is contracted until the summer of 2016.

News that the Cherries were targeting Mings broke yesterday when SkyBet slashed the odds of the 22-year-old making the move to 1/6.

Mings was watched by most of the Premier League last season with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea strongly linked.

Crystal Palace had a £3.5 million offer turned down last summer, while Newcastle were reported to have made an enquiry last week when they were said to have been quoted an initial fee of £8 million, rising to £10 million, again once further clauses were taken into account.

The Bath-born full-back joined the Blues from non-league Chippenham for a now-famous fee of £10,000 in December 2012.

Former U18s coach Russell Osman brought him to Portman Road for a trial on the recommendation of his son Toby, a team-mate of Mings, who had been released by Southampton as a schoolboy.

The one-time mortgage advisor made 49 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring once.

Town manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have both said that they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer, however with the Blues' spending power again limited by the Championship’s Financial Fair Play rules, selling a player for a big fee will give McCarthy far greater scope as he looks to strengthen ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

The Mings and Fraser and Pitman deals are likely to be completed on Friday, while Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also expected to have his season-long loan confirmed.

I guess with Fraser as a winger and Maitland-Niles coming too, that'll be the wide additions we need, Pitman gives us that extra competition up-front, I wouldn't be surprised if we go for Johnny Williams again (I'd be more surprised if he doesn't get injured!), I just like nearly all fans now pray we get a proper Right Back in!!

Splended business!

I've always rated Pitman can't believe they are letting him go 8 million is great as long as it's paid in full. A potentially great left back in mings won't get us promoted but the money and the right players brought in with that money will can't wait to see who else we will be signing a bit of excitement at last !

On cash alone that has to be the best bit of business we have ever done. Just hope it doesn't go straight into the back pocket, but who can blame Marcus if it did..

Good deal for us but shows a real lack of ambition from Mings. Gone there for the money plain and simple. He should have held out for a for a bigger and better club in my opinion.

why don't people read the whole story before commenting. the brett pitman deal is NOT part of the mings deal. charlieitfc, don't know where you've got ur info from as theres been no mention of it being 4 up front with rest to follow. just the straight 8 plus ryan fraser on loan. for those presuming that because were signing pitman that murphy is on his way too. poppycock. yes, that could still happen but the signing of pitman is to replace varney/hunt, to bring the number of strikers back up to strength. you need 4 strikers at any club. so, If murphy was to go im sure wed be looking for another striker then.

Very mixed feelings about this deal. On the one hand, cracking bit of business financially. On the other hand losing a young man with great potential who will probably go on to become a quality Premier player.

The most worrying part of this deal? Will MM see any of the money from this deal? Or will it come down to same old excuses of wages, FFP, etc etc etc. Come on Mr Evans now you have the chance to show the club's ambitions matches that of the supporters.

Good luck Tyrone and thank you for your contribution to the cause. COYB

Could buy him back at the end of the season when we go up and the Cherries do a Burnley.

Interesting to see how he copes with the step up in standard of defending required in the Premiership.

Great bit of business, never worth £8m at his current standard

Excellent : around £7.99 million more than he's worth, and the removal of the biggest liability in the team. Should be worth around 20 goals fewer conceded each season,

Scottish U19 and U21 international right winger Fraser is also due to move to Town on loan for the season as part of the Mings move - does that mean his wages are covered? That would change this to a stellar deal.

Good luck Tyrone. Fantastic business from all concerned at the club. Pitman will be a very useful addition to the squad as will Fraser giving us wide options. Perhaps Cameron Stewart will buck his ideas up now or be moved on.
I expect Bournemouth to do better than many and stay in the premier league, I also think their style of football may suit Tyrone in the long term so for him this is a big step up.
Take your chance young man, the future for you is bright.

The reality is a championship club can not afford to turn down this type of offer. I'm delighted we are close to signing Pitman - he is an excellent player. Not sure why we would go down the loan route for two players so early, but Mick knows best. Overall this is some excellent business.

However, I fully expect us to spend more of this money on not only wages but fees to strengthen our small squad further. Perhaps a new keeper? Defensive cover? And an attack minded goal scoring midfielder?

I do wonder if Murphy will be sold and in which case would need another striker to bring tally to four.

Good work.

Good for Mings, he will get game time for them in the PL, Good for Bournemouth - £8m is nothing with the new TV deal for raw talent, good for Town - we have a capable replacement LB and the money will be used to bolster our midfield and attacking options. Good deal all round!

jas0999. im presuming when u say about 2 loan players ur not including pitman in that. we are paying a fee for pitman as he is not part of the mings deal. am guessing u talking about fraser and the arsenal guy. the reason? simple id say. with fraser that's the only way Bournemouth would have allowed him to come here. with the arsenal player, much the same id say and we get to have an exciting prospect for a year which helps both us, and arsenal. just how I see it. could be wrong on that tho.

Excellent business- really chuffed. We have 2 class players for one player who although showed potential, was found wanting in many games toward the end of the season.

Yes, really sorry to see Mings go. He should turn out to be a helluva defender. However, it's decent money for the club and they cannot afford to stand in his way and deny him such a lucrative move. It will send out a strong signal to all other young players that you can progress your career one way or another with ITFC.

And we're off ...
Good deal for us, Bournemouth & Mings, we should all be happy. Good luck to him.
A strikeforce of Murphy, Sears, McGoldrick & Pittman (plus Varney at some point) looks pretty tasty at Championship level. Pittman is a goalscorer, something we are missing (yes I know Murph got 27, but he is still more an allrounder than a fox in the box type). Pittman will give us what Mick wanted in Billy Sharp. It's bad news for Noel Hunt's hopes of getting a new deal though. Can't believe Pittman is only 27, he seems to have been around for ages - and has scored goals everwhere he's been.

At the risk of being negative, I have two fears about this deal:
1) the money will go the same way as the Cresswell money,
2) Tyrone will realise his vast potential and we will be left regretting the day we sold him for so little.

Good luck to the lad though; I wish him well.

@Ipswichbusiness:
To be fair, I don't think we could have gotten more for Mings than £8m - £10m. Even if he stayed & had a great season, there is probably a limit on what someone without Premiership experience is actually worth. Cresswell could well go to City for £15m - £20m, but that's because he has proven himself week in, week out in the Premiership, Mings is a risk & still would be next season if he stayed with us.
