McCarthy: Jonas Has Been Terrific
Thursday, 20th Aug 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says new left-back Jonas Knudsen has made such a good start to his Blues career that Town haven’t missed Tyrone Mings, who joined Bournemouth for £8 million earlier in the summer. Danish international Knudsen, 22, was signed from Esbjerg for a fee understood to be in the region of £350,000 at the end of last month.

“I guess the biggest compliment I can give him is that we’re not missing Ty, and he was fabulous for us and I love Ty,” McCarthy said.

“Jonas has come in and has nailed that position, he’s been terrific. That’s the biggest compliment I can give him.

“Everybody, all the fans, myself, TC, we all loved Ty, we thought he was a terrific player, but you can’t see the join, he’s come in and been great.”

He believes players from some foreign leagues find it easier to settle into the hustle and bustle of the Championship than those from others.

“I guess it depends on which league they come from,” the Town manager added. “I think the Scandinavian leagues are pretty tough, they’re not all fanning out, they tackle and get about each other and get each other down.

“And we saw that in him when we first saw him on our scouting system, he looked like he’d got all the attributes to play in the Championship and that’s proving to be right.

“He’s very good, we trained [on Monday] morning and he was the one that’s shouting and encouraging. I’m delighted with him, he looks like a good signing.”

Knudsen looks like a worthy replacement for Mings, who in turn inherited the number three shirt from another excellent left-back Aaron Cresswell following his move to West Ham just over a year ago.

“I can’t take any credit for Cressy,” McCarthy continued. “I maybe helped him get out of the rut he was supposedly in when I joined, but I can’t take any credit for signing him.

"I think you’ve got to give Paul Jewell that credit. But I’ll take the credit for the other other two, partly along with TC.”

Jonas has grown into the way that Town are playing at present. His long throws, whilst not having borne direct fruit yet, certainly unsettle opposition defences. A player who is both effective on the field and good to watch.

Knudsen has looked very good indeed, and I'm not even sure I'd want to swap him back for £8M Mings given the chance! They are both 22 and so have room for improvement, but Knudsen looks like he knows what he's doing already and his long throws are a bonus. Great signing.

Has he got a brother who's a right back?

He is a great player. Mick should be proud of his scouts.

Jonas gets on well with all the other players which is fantastic to see. Sometimes foreign players struggle with fiiting in but he seems to be very popular.

To me he looks a more mature player than Mings even though they are the same age! Mings positioning sometimes could be questioned although his attacking game was fantastic - all in all I think we got a good deal and I look forward to seeing more from this young Dane

Very impressive so far and likely to get even better.

I think we have found another very good left back in Jonas.

Our set piece deliveries should set up a notch this season with AMN on corners and Knudsen on throw ins!
Plus I heard that AMN is supposedly very dangerous with frees just outside the box.

Smith & Berra must be thinking at least 6+ goals each this season!

One thing I will say about Smith is that he is actually a very good finisher (head & foot), his goal against Norwich was technically excellent.

Fantastic player. To be honest, have been impressed with most of MM's signings. He rarely makes mistakes when signing players and when he does its players on free transfers that are worth a shot anyway.

The Dark Lord spent millions and brought in some real duds. Paul Jewell too was a bit hit and miss on the transfers side.

In my opinion Jonas is already better than Mings ever was for town. I don't get all the fuss over Mings, yes he had potential, but did he ever really fulfill it?? He was often far too lax and switched off too easily. The one good thing about Mings was that he was a humble, decent guy, who clearly appreciated how lucky he was to be a professional footballer. I just think he was a tad overrated. Jonas will be a better player for us, than Mings was. Really excited by Jonas, he is a proper defender, but can also get forward well and has a cultured left foot

Knudsen is our left back
He's got a massive throw
But he can't take a short one
That's just how it goes

He throws them from the left side
He throws them from the right
But when he takes a short throw
They're always f#+#ing 5h1te

Massive fan of this guy already, looks like a proper defender first and foremost he's making sure he doesn't put a foot wrong, I think cressy was much the same when he first joined and with increased confidence and knowing what his team mates do he got forward more and more which is what I believe Jonas will. Also he has a real passion for the game his celebrations after the final whistle are brilliant to see, that he's genuinely that ecstatic with the result.

Can we maybe just lay off the Mings-bating a little bit here? He was a decent player for us, made us a small fortune, and I for one, wish him well.

But yes, Jonas has made a terrific start to his Town career.

It's great to see Knudsen settle and make an impact so quickly. Fantastic buy for such a small transfer fee. We should focus on scouting more Northern European players as that's where the bargains (and often talent) can be found. Players that are well adapted to the English game. Doing so has served us well in the past.

Mings was a decent player and a lovely guy but opinion on him was split. Personally I felt he was a little over-rated with Bournemouth paying well over the odds for him (maybe a £1-2m player?). I'm not convinced he is ready for the Premier League and I doubt he will follow in the footsteps of Cresswell (please prove me wrong Ty), but I wish him all the best and hope it works out. He deserves the opportunity.

Incredible bit of business by town...buy Mings for £10k,sell for £8m 2 years later...and to then go and bring in a Danish international who's potentially even better...brilliant!

This is how a championship club should be run.

As we're debating it -
I think Mings WILL prove to be worth the 8M and probably more, but it might take a couple of years to even get on the Bournemouth team, and then establish himself and push on.
Knudsen many never be worth that but probably will develop into a 1-2M+ player in a couple of months.

The irony is that Knudsen may well be better / more complete right now, which is kind of what counts when trying to get promoted, so we have done very well to get him. He is not so much a development player as a developed player.

Can't wait to see him.

I think the pictures in the article sum it up perfectly!

You can see the passion and pride in the lad to wear the blue shirt.

However, I bet we all still have no idea how to pronounce his surname correctly!...
