Town's Tickets Amongst the Championship's Most Expensive
Thursday, 15th Oct 2015 09:34

Town have some of the highest ticket prices in the Championship, according to this year’s BBC Sport Price of Football survey.

The Blues’ cheapest 2015/16 season ticket is the third most expensive at £411 (if bought before the early bird deadline) behind only Hull City (£531) and Brighton (£465) and 24 per cent above the division’s average.

At £829 Town’s most expensive season ticket is 42 per cent above the average and the second-highest priced behind Fulham (£839).

Regarding matchday prices, the Blues’ cheapest ticket, £23.50, is 12 per cent above the league average and the most expensive, £45.50, is 24 per cent above the average.

In a statement Town’s media manager Steve Pearce defended the club’s pricing: “We froze our matchday ticket prices for this season for 99 per cent of our supporters.

“Adult season tickets in the lower stands around the ground work out at less than £18 for a ticket to watch the 23 Championship games.

“It’s clear that supporters have picked up on the value of a season ticket because our sales are up 15.2 per cent year on year, while our matchday ticket sales are also up [by 6.72 per cent]. This takes into account that we had a gate of over 25,000 for the Norwich match at the start of last season.

“The higher price matchday tickets quoted are mainly for a Grade A game and we’ve not had a Grade A game this season and won’t have one before Christmas at least.

“There is also no mention of the £10 season ticket for our under-11s which has been in place for a number of years.

“It must be one of the most competitive season ticket prices in the country. We were asked to supply that information but the BBC have not used it.”

The BBC survey’s findings on Town can be found in full here, while their overview of football pricing in general can be found here.

Is this a surprise to anyone?

Also, I'm not sure stating that we have frozen a price that will have already been way above the league average is a particularly powerful rebuttal. Perhaps this shouldn't be such a surprise though - Portman Road and Ipswich Town are not really to be associated with strong defences this season.

Why do the club throw Steve Pearce to the media over this?

Should be Milne.

The 10 pound season ticket is not quite what it seems as you can only get it if you already have an adult season ticket in the most expensive areas of the ground

Isn't it about time they started to invest some of this money?

Scooby, slightly wrong there you can get them in the lower cobbold and co-op which are family areas so actually they are 2 of the cheapest areas for adults.

I don't think the uprising in season tickets is due to value. If anything, it's the success from last season. I'm a new ST holder (first year I've been able to make all the games) and I paid over £500+. It's not good value by any means, but I want to support the club. Price you have to pay I guess.

Doesn't help that Saturday fixtures are moved to midweeks though!

I'm a bit confused why, if we have among the highest ticket prices in the Championship, we only had the 9th highest match day revenue in 2013/14. That year, we had the 8th highest attendances. Something's amiss there. I'd expect we'd be top 5-6. Tax scam?

low attendances equals lack of revenue... We haven't got much to shout about at the mo, and haven't for ages... Our once great club, has people running it that treat us like the mugs we must be for paying these rip off prices

Totally agree mattfrost take out the night games you can't attend and it becomes £27.40 per game

Should be based on entertainment value. Oh no, they'd have to pay us.

Brendah - we have shockingly low corporate income on match day, hence one reason it isn't as high as you'd expect

happy to charge highest prices, also happy to be in the lowest spenders category. Despite being a season ticket holder, I often check to see what the match day charge is. Normally it ranges £28-£35 where I sit, with three categories. Every game this season has been priced at £35.00 ... The highest ... On the day. Every game. This isn't a surprise, as Evans spent the summer looking to get the highest possible price for our prize asset, find new ways of fleecing fans (mascot charge) and take legal action to cash in, whilst spend the least amount possible on players. Hence, why we ended up with cheap options like Toure and Coke. Below average players. Pitman aside, most of our permanent signings look average, are untried or for the future. I'm afraid I simply feel that Evans is now only after recouping as much as he can. His choice of course and actually few can blame him. But it's time for the club to be truthful, rather than spin the normal 'all funds spent on wages' nonsense.

Having reached the age (60) when perhaps I finally have more money than sense, I am taking up an old git's season ticket. To me this is incredibly good value at £298 but it does not show in the BBC survey. Most clubs don't give concessions until you are 65.

I can't however understand why the club charge so much more for upper SAR & SBR than the lower?

No surprise. I've been saying this for a few seasons - watching town if you're not a season ticket holder is far too expensive. It's all very well the club saying they have frozen prices, but match day tickets were too expensive last year and have been through most of the Evans era. Ipswich is a modest, working class town (just look at the state of the town centre). I'm not sure where the club think the money is in the area to justify £27.50/£32.50 for most home games. The pricing is thrown into sharp relief when you consider the absolute dross served up on the pitch under Mick McCarthy.

Jas0999 - where do you sit as i'll take it up with the club as that is not how it should work (and in every other area of the ground it doesn't!)

Brendanh, there's a simple explanation to your question (how are we only 9th highest revenue when we're 8th highest gates and allegedly 3rd most expensive prices). Town do discounts far more widely than most other clubs - seniors start at 60 (it's usually 65), then there are 16-19s and student prices, as well as the very deep discounted children's rates. Out average income per ticket is therefore midtable.

As usual, corporate-think has its say. The prices are high and whatever they say will not change that fact. Reduce prices and get more into the ground. Corporate-think does not agree and believe they will lose money this way. I'm not convinced, but I'd even take a bit of a loss to improve the atmosphere. Wouldn't it be great if WE owned the club - but that's dreamland these days.

Every year we fare badly in this survey and Mr Evans doesn't take any notice of us or surveys.
Yes there are anomalies but surely surveys don't lie.
Mr Evans is like the Conservative government, have an agenda, which is carried out regardless of who it hurts, which isn't the rich who can afford these prices.
For somebody who is in the corporate entertainment business,I am surprised how few guests there are this season in the padded seats in front of The Sir Bobby Robson suite(Formerly Galleria)

Perhaps the club could follow the Norwich model in the early 2000s of doing season tickets for families...... look at their gates before and now / champ and league 1. That guy has transformed their gates.

How the hell the club can justify a £2.50 price hike on the day is beyond embarrassing - that needs scrapping. Hertha Berlin actually reduce the price on the day if they haven't quite sold out - Bundusliga actually has a clue.

On the subject of that, I'm off to watch Mainz v Wolfsburg next month in safe standing terrace behind a goal - 13.50 euros a ticket, so a tenner to see Draxler and some superb players play.

I don't get why the upper tiers behind the goal are a lot more than the lower tiers, bridge the gap and more upper tier tickets will get sold.

I find our matchday one off prices to be way too high. We also rarely seem to do many decent promotion offers.

I think our season ticket prices aren't too bad - but don't think the club is especially proactive in doing anything to attract stay away fans back or new fans.

Our marketing department seems non-existent.

Steve Pearce hasn't defended these prices in any way. Nothing he has said defends or justifies the prices.
