Town Topic: The Greatest Town Hat-Tricks Monday, 9th Nov 2015 11:07
Daryl Murphy’s hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Rotherham was the first scored by a Town player since Connor Wickham’s in the 6-0 victory at Doncaster in February 2011, which trebles were the greatest scored for the Blues?

Apologies in advance, but this as good an excuse as any to wheel out a favourite all time Town game, featuring my hero Trevor Whymark hitting four against West Brom back in 1976....
If my memory is correct, it was Paul Mariner's first game at Portman Road. I remember being an excited 14-year-old when he signed as I just knew that he and Trevor would make a terrific strike-partnership. Happy days.
I have fond memories of Neil Gregory's totally unexpected hat-trick against Sheffield United, particularly as I was watching the game from the Britannia with my Blades-supporting father-in-law. My comments of "Blimey, he's not done anything like that before" and "He's usually s**t, you know" didn't improve his mood.
I agree with both Mathie and Wymark, I too was a great fan of Trevor. I also have fond memories of John Wark's four against WBA. I took a mate of Brendan Batson, WBA, who got us passes to the players lounge for after the game. It was like a buffet both sets of players, the ref etc all digging in. I'm sure they don't do that now. As it happens Brendan went off injured in that game never to play football again. I still have the programme signed by Warky with a big 4 beside his name.
Re Harrys post, and to rub salt in their wounds we had beaten WBA for Mariners signature. What a signing that was. Just had to love his self confidence bordering on a touch of Mancunian arrogance. Talk about an aerial threat - Mariner and Whymark were the best in the country.
For what was at stake it has to be Magiltons against Bolton in the Play Off Semi's, Portman Rd was rocking that night. For great memories/times i'll go for Wymarks against West Brom mid 70s ! My earliest memory of hat tricks was Gerry Baker's early 60s followed by Colin Viljoen's on his debut mid 60s i think i recall.
Alex Mathie's against Norrdige, Jim's against Bolton in recent memory, but I was elsewhere for both matches. The one which came to mind immediately was Colin Viljoen's in 1968 at Carrot Rd. I was there for that one!
Another one from even earlier was by Gerry Baker at White Hart Lane in the 1963/64 Div 1 relegation season. Unfortunately, we let in 6 at the other end, including three from Cliff Jones!
Is my memory gone or did I witness johnny wark scoring 3-4 a while back against some continental team ,i remember vividly the roaring chorus of (johnny wark, johnny wark, johnny wark)and I vaguely recall we won a cup that year...
Yes,Colin Viljoen at Carrot Rud in 4-3 win-I was there too. Also Ace Viljoen on his debut against Portsmouth. Jimbo in playoff game. Trevor Whymark against WBA and against Lazio. Alex Mathie in Demolition Derby. Ray Crawford five against Floriana.
Yep was thinking of Dalian Atkinson's vs Boro as they were just 3 fantastic hits, but the mention of Jim's hattrick vs Bolton above just blows this out of the water. What with the occasion and importance of the game it tops them all for me, his second (I think), when he waltzed into the box was superb, if Messi had scored that everyone would have been shouting about it.
I don't know what is so crazy about Neil Gregory scoring a hat-trick, the fact how crap he was and someone like that could ever score two in a game let alone a hat-trick or how a defence could be so bad to allow it.
On a more serious note, since I've only been going since 1994 because of my relatively young years compared to some on here, I have to mention Jim's in the Play-Off's against Bolton, Alex Mathie's against that lot from up the road and Stewart's against Southampton.
Mariner was all wrapped up at West Ham when SBR sneaked in and derailed their deal. Who could turn down Terry Austin and John Pedelty in part exchange though?
My favourite, Colin Viljoen at Carrion Road. All the better because we were 1-3 down at half time, so winning was enhanced!
