McGreal Confirms Town's January Interest in Winger Dickenson
Wednesday, 15th Mar 2017 00:34

Colchester United boss John McGreal confirmed the Blues’ transfer window interest in U’s winger Brennan Dickenson as he praised the 24-year-old's performance after he scored one and created another in Tuesday evening’s 2-0 home victory over Mansfield. In January, TWTD revealed that Colchester had turned down a Town offer for Dickenson.

"There are reasons why the likes of Ipswich Town came knocking on the door for Brennan in January and one or two others I'm sure will in the summer,” ex-Blues centre-half McGreal told the Colchester Gazette.

"Brennan is a terrific player - we brought him in in the summer when he was lacking confidence but this is his best season in football by far. He's come to a young, vibrant team and we've told him to go and play.

"He scored with his right foot coming in and he's adapted his game but you also know you're going to get his numbers with his supply, with a great ball in for Sam [Szmodics].

“It was a very hard-earned win for us and it keeps us in and around that top seven [in League Two], so I’m absolutely delighted.”

Having had their move for Dickenson rebuffed, Town subsequently signed another winger, Danny Rowe from Macclesfield, and it remains to be seen whether the Blues will renew their interest in the U’s wideman in the summer.

Dickenson joined Colchester on a two-year deal last summer having been released by Gillingham. Since moving to the Weston Homes Community Stadium he has made 30 starts and two sub appearances, scoring 10 goals.

MM loves a winger but never plays them.

John McGreal - legend.

We don't need wingers we need a dominant attacking midfielder or three. No use having wingers if the midfield just pass the bloody ball backward every time to be hoofed upfield to the opposition. Muck is an idiot and must go now!!!!!!!!

can we have their manager ?

itfcrocks added 07:49 - Mar 15
MM will ruin his career , how about Mcgreal and him signing

braveblue added 08:36 - Mar 15
Wonder if we found out his value and bid 50%.

planetblue_2011 added 09:35 - Mar 15

Absolutely no point in having wingers here while McCarthy is in charge : he likes the idea of wingers, but when he finds out that they spend a lot of time attacking, rather than acting as extra defenders, they get discarded for having a bad attitude. Stewart ; Henshall ; Rowe ; etc

So we signed Rowe (who has yet to appear) because we couldn't get a Colchester player? Add that to the 'feel good factor' as fans consider season ticket renewal.

I agree about the wingers, Mccarthy has signed many over his years here but not one has made the grade.

Would replace mm with mcgreal tomorrow

There's a pattern emerging here. Have bids for guys playing in the league turned down so we default to non-league players. Evans OUT!

A centre forward (a proper no.9) must be the priority in the summer, followed by a couple of wingers, maybe one if Rowe ticks the boxes, and a ball playing centre half to play with Webster and maybe Smith if we are ever going to revert back to a footballing side. All will depend obviously if our Tactically inept Dino remains or not.

McCarthy OUT

Didn't we take a manager from Colchester once before. Mind you back then we had a decisive Chairman who loved the Club, and didn't care that said manager had only been at Col U for a short time. He was impressed, knew the man understood OUR Club, and he got him in......and backed him.

Such a thing and any possibility of the sustained quality football, plus the relative glory that decision brought OUR Club are never going to happen whilst ME is in charge......and as long as he lets MM run things for him

It's the lack of hope that kills ! Quite sincerely, I just want my Club back.

Just can't understand why Colchester turned down our offer of £5 & a packet of cheese & onion, very strange. Football is indeed a funny old game sometimes 😕
