Town Sign Wolves Defender Iorfa On Loan Friday, 14th Jul 2017 16:38
Town have announced the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Dominic Iorfa on loan for the season.
The 22-year-old England U21 international underwent a medical at Portman Road this afternoon before tying up the formalities relating to his move.
"I'm happy to be here because Ipswich is a good club," Iorfa told iFollow Ipswich.
"I spoke to the manager a few days ago and he told me about the plans for the season; he really sold it to me.
"The moment I spoke to him, I couldn't wait to get here and get started. He basically just told me that he wanted to get me on board, and he told me what positions he plans to use me in.
"I can play right-back and centre-half as well. He's confident that we can have a good season and push for the play-offs.
"He's assembled a good squad and I think things are looking promising for the club."
Manager Mick McCarthy added: “I’m thrilled to have got Dominic. He is very athletic, has got great pace and can play at centre-half as well as right-back and is equally good in both roles.
“With the defenders we already have here in the squad and with Dominic coming in, we have really good options in that area.”"
Southend-born Iorfa began his career with his hometown club but left the Shrimpers for Wolves - then managed by McCarthy - aged only 15.
The 6ft 4in tall full-back, who can also operate at centre-half, spent time on loan at Shrewsbury in the 2013/14 season before breaking into the first team at Molineux midway through the following campaign.
Capped by England at U18 and U20 level in addition to his 13 games for the U21s, Iorfa has made 91 starts and two sub appearances for Wolves, so far without scoring a senior goal.
Despite having been a regular throughout last season and featuring for the England U21s at this summer's European Championships, Iorfa, who is contracted until the summer of 2019, was left out of the Wolves squad which travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp earlier this week.
Earlier in the summer, Derby were claimed to be eyeing a move with Iorfa, who was said to be valued at £4 million, while more recently Leeds have been linked.
Iorfa's father, also Dominic, is a former international winger with Nigeria. At club level he had spells with QPR, Peterborough and Southend among many others.
Town have been on the lookout for another right-back to compete with Jordan Spence having allowed Josh Emmanuel to join Rotherham on loan earlier in the week in order to gain first-team experience.
Regarding Emmanuel, McCarthy added: “Josh needs to be playing first-team games every week and hopefully he will do that at Rotherham.
“He will gain a lot from the experience and come back to us a better player for it.” "
On Tuesday former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played in the friendly against Southend but the signing of Iorfa is likely to end the Blues' interest in the one-time Reading defender.
The addition of another player who can play as a right-sided centre-half, joining skipper Luke Chambers and Adam Webster in the squad, could have some bearing on Steven Taylor's future at Town.
The former Newcastle man is currently training with the Blues with a view to winning a contract having been on a short-term deal last season.
Meanwhile, the Royals have confirmed the signing of Town target Jon Dadi Bodvarsson from Wolves on a three-year deal.

The point where our own youngsters go out and get guaranteed first team football, coming back to us as better players, as opposed to sitting on our bench doing F all, like this chap is likely to.
So, we off load permanent players and send out our youngsters on loan to get them valuable experience that they wouldn't get sitting on our bench and bring in someone else's on loan that happen to be an England Under 21 international? Which part of having something to moan about does this tick?
If This is with a view to a permanent move this is brilliant, actually think this guy is better than Spence. Glad we got this done fast aswell this isn't the sort of fast transfers we want to happen. COYB
I imagine he's been bought in as a first choice, no way Wolves would have loaned him to us if he's just going to sit on our bench. Very pleased with what i've seen of him for Wolves and England, and even better Emmanuel gets game time at Rotherham in the process. Safe to say Chambers is no longer considered for right back, very happy!
Strange why Wolves let him go, but at 6"4 seems like a McCarthy type of full back! From Harry's notes last season: “It seems strange to think that Dominic Iorfa is playing in his natural position against Reading, such has been his assurance at right-back.” The 21-year-old Southend and Wolves youth product played at centre-back against the Royals. “He did well, used his pace occasionally and was strong and solid.”

The way I look at this Emmanuel out quite raw needs to play every week to develope so going on loan I get: Well done for signing a replacement who's better than Josh: I've seen him a few times quick strong & versatile: read what Wolves fans say about him hardly any negative comments in fact some can't believe he is here compare the reaction to Dadi Yesterday the complete opposite: under the new regime at Wolves where their signings will mainly be from Portugal: let's hope we have something in place to make it permanent: Good Loan Signing welcome!!
2 very athletic full-backs, a goal-scoring midfield, the marauding webster to come back and bialkowski to stay. All we need is a back-up centre-back, a winger and a target man. Looking forward to the season!!!

I like it when signings come out of the blue (no pun intended) like this one. Looks very promising young lad and hopefully strong competition for Spence. Never know could even turn out to be a permanent signing next year ;) Just need that striker now and maybe another CB (preferably Taylor)
I'm really pleased with this signing has he's proven in the Championship & brings International experience albeit being the U21's. Still need another Striker which I'm sure Mick has already got lined up, he kept Iorfa quiet so I won't be surprised if he has got somebody coming in soon. COYB
Anyone who knows there stuff knows how good he is, valued at £4 million, been linked with multiple PL clubs in the past. Absolutely unbelievable signing l. Hate to say it, but I want to see the best ITFC team possible and that means Spence on the bench for me.
There's no doubt that this ones a decent signing, will give Spence good competition and well ticks MM's 'big man' box!. I am not happy about the Josh situation at all, but it is what it is, like many other issues with the club etc at the moment I will just have to deal with it. Every dog has his day though!!
@hoppy - your continuing prodding of others posters for moaning are becoming extremely repeatative & tiresome!!. Posters who are not happy and express so, have every right to do so, at least most are moaning about the club or Manager and not at fellow ITFC fans like you are becoming accustom too. End of!
