Middlesbrough Targeting Waghorn
Friday, 29th Jun 2018 13:38

TWTD understands Middlesbrough are keen to take Blues striker Martyn Waghorn back to the North-East this summer and are among a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for the 28-year-old.

Waghorn joined Town from Rangers for a bargain £200,000 last August and enjoyed a hugely successful first season at Portman Road.

The South Shields-born frontman was the Blues' top scorer with 16 goals and also picked up 11 assists. No one else in the Championship was directly involved in more goals.

The former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan man’s form with Town didn’t go unnoticed elsewhere in the Championship and we understand Tony Pulis wants to add the ex-England U21 international to his Boro squad ahead of 2018/19.

Birmingham City are also among those to have been keeping tabs on Waghorn, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further year, along with Nottingham Forest, who were linked last week.

Whether the Blues would be willing to part with one of their most highly prized assets, who quickly became a fans’ favourite after moving to Suffolk, remains to be seen.

However, new boss Paul Hurst evidently wants to put his stamp on the squad and Town have already shown that they are willing to allow senior players to move on if an acceptable offer is received, Adam Webster having joined Bristol City for an initial £3.5 million rising to £8 million yesterday.

Webster’s departure and the exit of youngster Ben Knight to Manchester City for just over £1 million, which is set to be confirmed in the next few days with the fee agreed and permission from the Premier League for the move to go through granted, means the Blues are under no pressure to sell and they would almost certainly want a very significant sum for one of last season’s top Championship performers.

Can't see this happening, unless it's for big money. Waggy is settled and has actually moved his parents down from the North East to Suffolk. We should be looking to tie him down to a new deal

Nooooo :( I think we would all be gutted if this happened. Lets hope there isn't much in this. He was our best outfield player by far last season. If he was to be sold we shouldn't accept any offer lower than 10 million. Lets hope he stays though!!

Why would you do this? Goal scorers are like gold dust... and please don't anyone say we can unearth one from the lower divisions.

I’ll cry. Genuinely.

This gives our manager the chance to ship out a good player and bring in either another of his mates or a freebie from the lower leagues ! It appears to be a case of if the players were signed by Mccarthy they are not going to be retained because they all liked and respected him! This is not looking good for our future !

Really looking forward to the new season but with the loss of Webster and Boro interested in Waghorn it does make me wonder if Evans is satisfied with Championship football.

Unlike the Webster transfer I would be extremely narked if they sold him, one of the only bright moments from the last season of mad Mick's reign.
I can't see as we could afford to let him go at any price having lost DMG already, another striker to add to what we have is a must surely.

No way should we sell but if we do, Wags outperformed Maddison, so 25 million should be our initial asking price

Must not happen. If it does all the goodwill that has been generated by the departure of the Dinosaur and the appointment of Paul Hurst will be undone!
I think we need a statement that we won't be selling any more "stars".

meekreech - I think this is a little early to say this over the departure of Webster and that PH wants to get rid of MM signings, I very much doubt it. Unlike Webster, Waghorn has stayed relatively injury free. I can understand the Webster sale, especially if they have a player or two in mind as he appears to be a sick note based on his time since joining Town, his performances have been average and for a reasonable sum that may allow PH to bring in 3 or 4 good players, I can see the logic. Waghorn would be difficult to lose, he has performed well and IMO would be much harder to replace.

well if we sell waghorn then it is obvious their is no intention of this club wanting progress. One of the better strikers in this league to be replaced by a freebe low div man???

Why would he want to go play for another long ball merchant anyway?

This only happens is Waghorn pushes for it, surely? Would be gutted.

Nothing surprise me.

He will of course be targeted after a good season and if the price is right he will be sold. End of. What concerns me is how much will be ploughed back into the team.

it can be argued if with 2 wingers he will actually fit into the style of play the manager wants to play.

given the number of players who have left Ipswich we should actually be targeting signings and not shipping out just yet.

Best we get looking for a new number 9 then.

Middlesborough can do one!
If that muppet Maddison can go for £24 million then Waggy is worth twice as much!
