Blades Not Giving Up on Waghorn Pursuit - Report
Friday, 20th Jul 2018 09:02

Sheffield United reportedly aren’t giving up on their pursuit of Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, despite manager Chris Wilder having said last night that Town’s £8-£10 million valuation has put them out of the chase.

According to the Sheffield Star, talks between the clubs are continuing with South Shields-born Waghorn said to be tempted by a move back up north.

That and Blues manager Paul Hurst admitting yesterday that he can’t guarantee that Waghorn will still be at Town on the opening day of the season are reported to have led to the Blades continuing their interest in the 28-year-old, who scored 16 times and recorded 11 assists last season.

Although Wilder cited the Blues' asking price as £8-£10 million in an interview with Sheffield Live TV last night, it’s claimed the Blades were initially given a £7.5 million valuation when making contact with Town regarding Waghorn.

The South Yorkshiremen are far from the only party interested in the former Rangers, Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man.

TWTD previously revealed that Derby and Middlesbrough have also shown strong interest this summer, while Birmingham City have also been monitoring the situation and Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Waghorn, who joined the Blues from Ibrox for a bargain £200,000 in August last year, is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 but with the club having the option to extend that deal for a further year.

DO NOT sell Waghorn! He is by far our best player and if we sell him you have to wonder where the goals are coming from. Not just his goals but his corners and generally seems to be a bit of a leader in the group. If we have any ambition we can't sell him unless a Premier League team comes in and offers silly money. (over 10 million)

Ffs I'm 100% convinced he's as good as gone now. Don't accept a sh1t offer like 7.5 mill paid in stages minimum 10 all upfront if he wants to go.

Surely if we have desires of getting promoted we shouldn't be even talking to other championship team's about our best player's.

We need to be signing players not getting rid of more. Another day goes by and no new players in, just talk of players maybe going. We are going to end up here in a right mess for the start of the season. Transfer window will be shut and we will be relying on rubbish loans that no one else wanted or young kids that we are just blooding for other teams.

The desires and ambition lie with the owner im afraid and thats our problem. IF only we could find an owner worth over 800 million!

IF WAGGY IS INTERESTED AS QUOTED BY "GUTTER PRESS" THEN IN THIS INFLATED MARKET NEED TO LOSE OUR IMAGE AS A CHARITY & ACCEPT NOTHING LESS THAM £10mill + ADD ONS, IDEALLY A REPLACEMENT SIGNED B/4 ANY DEAL COMPLETED,

Got to try our best to hold on to important players like Waggy. It really doesn't matter how big an offer comes in. Our transfer policy does not take into account funds that are generated from player sales.

IF we do sell Waghorn I'd expect wholesale changes throughout our squad by Hurst. 7.5 is a nice start up front....with about 1-2 Million in add-ons (appearances, number of goals etc). A promotion clause is a good move too as would expect Sheffield Utd to be there or thereabouts next season.

Like many have already said though...I can't see where our goals are going to come from. Garner? Often out. Sears? No. Folami? Not at this level. Morris? Needs to get a few sub appearances this season...but not a regular starter. If we do sell we've basically got two weeks to bring two strikers in....with every club knowing exactly how much money we can afford to spend...

The only other alternative is the PFA free transfer list and many strikers have already been signed up from that list already...

Loans? Oh dear...it will be loans again won't it???

Clearly no ambition.

If it's loans they have to be in by the time the window closes, no late loan window this year.

One would hope that any deal would have to wait until someone else was in.

Let's hope its paper nonsense, Wilder says they can't afford him at 8 but apprently at 7.5 they can......?

I'm holding fire until Aug.....

Pivotal moment in our season, already!...

Evans - Genuinely ambitious or asset stripping?

Slightly surprised to see he would like a move up north after hearing that he and his family love it here , but I guess money has something to do with it .

With other clubs interested we certainly shouldn't be selling him cheap ..

Don't want him to go but it's looking more likely now , the worry is what we do with the money - no point wasting it on expensive loans .

We still haven't used the money from Webster deal which is crazy ,with time so short before the season . If Waghorn were to go we need immediate replacements and not cheap fillers or loans .

Well we already have sold our best defender, may as well sell our best striker to another championship rival :(
Last one out, turn off the light!

poor management if hurst lets him go. only signed gamble players so far.

Seems strange, because Waggy comes across as being very happy in Suffolk. He's moved his parents down from the North East and so can't see why he'd be keen on a move back up north

maybe the gravy and chips are better t'up north!

Could be a good test of the management's true ambitions for the club.

Here is my thinking.

1) if he doesn't want to be here and wants to move up north then sell, we don't want anything but 100% commitment this season.

2) if we are going to sell then follow the market. look at people like Mccormack -12m, Waghorn worth just as much as he was.

Town need to stick to there guns on this one, we don't want to lose him but everyone has a price, 10mill should be the minimum we take for him.

It is not Hurst who has the final decision on whether a player is sold or not. All he can do is tell M.E that he does not want to sell a player but it is down to M.E to make the final decision.

I bloody love Waghorn.....

However, £200,000 turned into £8+ million is great business regardless of the industry.

I don't want him to go but we aren't rich

This would be a terrible move to sell our key striker to divisional rivals
