Chambers Slams FFP Rules
Friday, 19th Oct 2018 13:06

Blues skipper Luke Chambers has slammed the Championship’s Financial Fair Play rules, believing they have failed to create a more level playing field.

FFP - now known as Profitability and Sustainability - was introduced at the start of 2012/13 in attempt to reduce the losses Championship clubs were making and to try to even up the division. However, Chambers feels it has failed in this aim.

“The way I understand it, FFP was brought in to create a level playing field,” he writes in his column in Saturday's matchday programme.

“Well, if you are going to do that, it should have been across all leagues including the Premier League.

“In my opinion, Financial Fair Play is a load of old rubbish. Owners should be allowed to spend what they want on their clubs and it’s hardly worked as a deterrent has it?

“Clubs have taken a gamble and spent money and some have gone up so any punishment they get is peanuts to the money they get in the Premier League.

“Some of those that haven’t are still spending big in the Championship and there are players at this level earning £40,000 a week. Some level playing field that!”

In July, Saturday's opponents QPR settled their long-running FFP dispute with the EFL, agreeing to pay a fine of £42 million plus costs of £3 million. They also have a transfer embargo in January, while shareholders were required to capitalise £22 million in loans.

He's not wrong is he. The whole thing is a farce.

Introduction of the fatally flawed, politically motivated, FFP regime has failed to benefit football at any level. The fact that those responsible for football governance ever thought it would achieve level playing fields, or limit spending/debt and therefore improve the lot of less wealthy clubs, demonstrates (in spades) how remote from reality they were - and probably remain!

What happens to these fines? By rights it ought to be paid by way of compensation to the other clubs in the league that have missed out due to unfair competition, I'm not sure that it is though.

Absolutely right. Teams like Wolves, Villa, QPR, Notts Forest etc should've been docked 20 points. I remember when we were relegated and had to sell players like Bent, Holland, Stewart etc for absolute peanuts! Now they get rewarded for being relegated with huge parachute payments.

Berts Chin makes a very good point.
The EFL gobbles up the cash but after that it's a mystery as to where it goes.
However, if you then distributed it to the other Championship clubs, what about those who appear to be flouting the rules or chancing it on getting to the Premiership. Should they receive some of the cash when it's distributed?
That's as much a bag of worms as the FFP rules are.

Been saying this for years. A range how none of the pundits ever mention it. Gary Lineker loves posturing on Twitter but never have I seen him talk about FFP, don't rock the boat when you're on the PL gravy train, nom, nom, nom.

It's a circus that has furthered the gulf between big and small clubs, hamstringing the latter as they do not generate the turnover required to allow them to compete and forcing owners to play stick or twist spunk it up the wall roulette in the hope of reaching the land of milk and honey.

Give it 20 years and European super league and the end of prmotion/relegation will be the death knell of football and we'll all have to take up bowls for something to do on a sat afternoon.

Lucky us

The whole FFP thing is like the FA itself, a load of corrupt bollo###

The only thing FFP achieved was to provide Evans with an excuse not to provide meaningful investment in the playing squad!

The suits of the EFL are hamstrung, on one side SKY holding a small scrap of cash for 72/92, on the other side the legal guys saying, "water FFP down otherwise you'll be sued to bankruptcy". No sympathy for them, they should never have played hardball in 1990 when the Prem was formed. And us fans still pay up with like junkies, so why should they be that bothered?

Absolutely spot on LC. I've been saying it for years, FFP, is complete tosh, as is P&S!

Owners/boards should be allowed to spend what they want to spend on their clubs (businesses). It's nobody's business but their own.

Just like any other enterprise they should stand or fall by their own decisions, and not be dictated to by a bunch of nannying numpties!

Most of the people at the FA couldn't run a bath, let alone a sport!

Stop the payment to Premiership failures, make them compete at the same level as the rest of the Championship Clubs. Mr Murdoch and his Sky has dominated our game for too long.

Can't believe anyone ever took it seriously. Good excuse for Marcus though.
