Town Draw Luton Away in Carabao Cup
Thursday, 20th Jun 2019 19:17

The Blues have drawn Championship new boys Luton Town away in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie will take place at Kenilworth Road in the week starting August 12th, following Town's first home game of the season against Sunderland.

The teams last met in the same competition two seasons ago, also in round one, when the Blues, then in the Championship with the Hatters in League Two, won 2-0, David McGoldrick netting both goals in the Blues' only cup victory in the last three seasons.

Town and the Hatters were also drawn together in the competition on two further occasions.

In November 1987 John Duncan's Blues were beaten 1-0 at Portman Road in the fourth round of what was then known as the Littlewoods Cup with Brian Stein on target. The Hatters went on to win the trophy that season.

Luton were also victorious in a two-legged second round tie between the sides in September 1998, winning the Kenilworth Road match 4-2 - David Johnson and home defender Sol Davis netting for Town and Andrew Fotiadis, Stuart Douglas, Davis at the right end and Marvin Johnson for Luton - after George Burley's Town had won 2-1 at Portman Road when Manu Thetis and James Scowcroft were on the scoresheet for the Blues.

Overall, the Blues have won 12 games (eight in the league) between the sides, Luton 12 (nine) with five (three) having ended in draws.

Tonight's draw took place in the Morrisons supermarket in Colindale, close to Wembley Stadium where the final will eventually take place, and was carried out by John Barnes and Ray Parlour.

Last season the Blues were beaten 4-2 on penalties at Exeter City in round one following a 1-1 draw.

God, the doom mongers. Happy with that draw and confident we'll get through. Also confident that this time next season we'll be the championship club and Luton will be back where they belong.

Now that we're officially a lower league club we'll probably have our best cup run for 30yrs. Can we produce a shock of our own...….probably not !

Don't panic.
It's likely to be a Luton b team in the 1st round.
I expect Luton to be pushing the play off places, with one eye on the premier league.
A very good side, with some very tidy players.
Assuming they keep hold of them this summer.
Which they will, because of the way the club has been run.
And continues to be run.

Giant killing ahoy... Time to dish it out to the big clubs in the higher divisions!

Aside from Ipswich, I'd just like to welcome Salford to the League Cup, should get a record crowd for that draw, and a massive policing bill.

Pendejo. We will be playing Salford home and away in the 20/21 season. And they will be a league above in the 21/22 season.
A club run financially to suit ambition.
Passionate owners with the right contacts, should there hundreds of millions need a boost.
If there success over last 5 years is anything to go by.
They will be in the Championship within next 5 years, maybe sooner, considering there potential financial clout.

Read this and thought ‘oh. another banana skin' then somewhat depressingly realised that they are favourites and in a higher league. Reality setting in.

Looks like we're going to continue our age old tradition of being knocked out in the 1st round again but by Luton a club that has leapfrogged us...says it all.

Well, after a lousy League fixture list from my point of view (Southend away is when I'm on holiday, Milton Keynes & Wimbledon away both night games, Wycombe away on New Year's Day) a small ray of sunshine - Luton away was probably the most local fixture we could have got! Bring it on - let's see if Lambert "does" cups.

I think it's a good fixture to see where we are.. promoted from league one.. if we were to win, it's evidence that we are stronger than the best league 1 has to offer..

Luton will be looking to consolidate their place in the Championship so may well put out most of their B side for this one. If that's the case, I believe we could be in with a chance of an upset.
