Former Bury Defender Thompson Linked
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2019 11:18

Town are reported to be eyeing former Bury central defender Adam Thompson.

According to the EADT, the Blues are keen on Thompson, who is understood to have been interesting a number of League One and League Two clubs having terminated his contract at Gigg Lane in the wake of the Shakers’ ongoing financial problems.

Twice-capped Northern Ireland international Thompson impressed as Bury won promotion to League One last season and wore the captain’s armband on occasion.

The 26-year-old from Harlow began his career with Watford during which time he had spells on loan with Brentford, Wycombe, Barnet and Southend before making his switch to the Shrimpers permanent in 2014.

After joining Bury three years later Thompson, who also operates at right-back, had a short stint on loan with Bradford City.

Town appear likely to be in the market for another senior central defender with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced centre-halves at the club ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, although Cole Skuse impressed at the heart of the defence against Sheffield United towards the end of last season.

Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which appears likely to see him miss the start of the season.

Sounds like a decent back up option. Played at international level, versatile and captained his team to promotion. All good qualities to have.

Ndaba hamstring as well Phil, or should that have been Nsiala?

Sounds ok and think he would be a good addition covering CB and Right Back. But he is right footed and we really need a lefty Centre Back to give us some balance. See Curtis Tilt's transfer from Blackpool to Barnsley is in doubt after the "goal posts were moved", now where have we heard that before?

Sounds like he would be a good solid addition, something we need badly. I like Chambers as a skipper but have to say last season he was a bit of a liability at times.
Hope he signs.

Sounds like a good potential replacement for Chambers.

What we really need though is a replacement for Berra. When are we going to address the fact that we never replaced him?

We never would have had this problem if we had gotten rid of the Dino a year earlier. We would still have Tommy Smith.

Is he a direct replacement for Tommy Smith or Berra. Both let go for nothing.
Which was a balls up by the club to say the least.
If he can come straight in the side for 1st game of the season, as a central defender.
And keep his place because of performing outstanding.
Then it's a big yes from me.

We don't replace people. That's a crazy notion.

Who needs a balanced team when you can get makeshift loans and freebies.

Yes another right footed central defender. Amazing that the club let 2 decent quality left footers in Berra & Smith just leave for zero, when left footed central defenders are like gold dust. Utter bad management by McCarthy or Evans (or both)

Northstander, how do you know he lives local?

Sorry my error, Nsiala suffered the hamstring, obviously.

Another cheap import to confirm we are nothing but a League One outfit who will recruit anyone who is cheap enough.

Northstander, you're thinking of the wrong Bury

Sears injured , Bishop injured , Nsiala injured and still 2-3 weeks before the start of the season so for sure there will be others to add to the list. Sounds like a typical start to he season for us.

I think Northstander meant that he is originally from Harlow and quite possibly will still have family there. Not too far from Ipswich.

Not seen him play, dont know much about him. However, we do need a centre back urgently.

If we get the bargain basement guy from Lincoln wonder if this link for Thompson is already dead and BURYied?

what annoys me is that we needed a new CB or two at the end of last season , why has it take to 2 weeks before the start of the season and we're now panic trialing anyone who has ever played football who owns legs !!

Eddiespearitt03 - if you are unhappy about a potential signing released from Bury, I cannot imagine your incredulous reaction to the possibilities of signing a 30 year old centre half not deemed good enough for Lincoln 😂

Glad other's have focused on the massive funk up by Mick/Evans regarding Berra, Smith (& Clarke). We have not had that left-right balance since :(

Mate of mine who supports Bury has just told me, and I quote "He was our worst starting 11 player last season".

Great.
