Former Blues Striker McGoldrick Released By Blades
Friday, 13th May 2022 21:26

Former Town striker David McGoldrick has been released by Sheffield United.

The 34-year-old joined the Blades after leaving Town in the summer of 2018 and enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Bramall Lane, helping them to promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19 and ninth in the top flight the following season.

The former Republic of Ireland international, who was with the Blues for the previous five and a half years, said his goodbyes on Instagram.

“All good things must come to a end and my time at SUFC has come 😢,” he wrote. “From coming on trial and winning promotion, winning Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Goal of Season, 10 goals in the Premier League and making friends for life, [it] has been nothing short of a fairytale.

“Your love and support from you fans that you have given me has never gone unnoticed and I will never forget it!

“The club and players (my brothers) are in good hands under Hecky [manager Paul Heckingbottom] and his staff and I’m confident this season will be be a happy ending for me ⚔️❤️ ”

In total, McGoldrick made 103 starts and 33 sub appearances for the Blades, scoring 30 goals.

Sheffield United host Nottingham Forest in their play-off semi-final first leg at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon with McGoldrick not involved having missed the end of the season with a thigh injury.

Probably one, if not the most talented player we had under Mick.

Last time I saw him play for Sheff Utd, he ran like he was in a three-legged race so I wouldn't have him back.

We don't need another very talented forward player who struggles to score goals. You just know he'd be all Macauley Bonne from the second half of the season or McGoldrick from all his seasons in the Prem!

Quality player but he was languid enough in his younger days. How slow is he going to be now?

still it's interesting to see how a fox in the box operates.

No thanks. Never showed the heart for us as he has with The Blades. Was never the same player after we stopped him moving to Leicester.
As said by BeattiesBackPocket, would rather have Billy Sharp.

Don't see him as a player with the correct attitude to drop down a league. At 34 he's one from the past and certainly not the future. Anyway, where does it mention a Portman Rd return in that article?!

No way José. He didn't appear to want to play for us full stop. He was constantly injured averaging less than 30 games a season, 22 league appearances in his last season at Ipswich. Then he moved to Sheff U and miraculously, he was able to play 45 league games in his first season. Yes he was one of the best talents here in recent years but i just don't think he wanted to be here.

I wouldn't have him back in any shape or form! I could have seen it happening in Evans's reign but thankfully not with the new regime, only players who want to give their all will get in!

He said that Sheffield United were the only club to come in for him so he had to get fit and he looked stones lighter and played 40+ games in his first season

Great player, but look forward not backwards!

Skilful player but he ran like an old granny last time he was here - let's not go backwards.

At 34 hes not gonna play alot of 90 mins but if he we can get him as an impact player why not look at him he was never a runner but could split a defence up with a single touch tbh lets just trust the managers signings this summer, going to be exciting

He wouldn't come back and neither should he. He is a fantastic talent and very clever but he is not the type of player we need. To clarify Leicester never even spoke to him or made a bid for him so that was media talk.
