Coleman: It's a Circus
Wednesday, 8th Mar 2023 09:31

Accrington manager John Coleman hit out at the “circus” whenever his team faces big clubs in League One following their 3-0 defeat to the Blues at Portman Road, believing his side don't get a “fair crack of the whip” from officials.

Coleman was deeply unhappy with his keeper Lukas Jensen’s late red card, shown by referee Lee Swabey after the Dane upended Harry Clarke with the Town sub breaking through on goal. Kyle Edwards scored the resultant free-kick.

“We’re devastated with the sending off. It’s not a sending off, is it? They must have changed the rules and I haven’t been told,” Coleman said.

“A DOGSO is denying of a goalscoring opportunity, so if he hadn’t have fouled him, if he doesn’t foul him, does that ball not go by the corner flag? He’s got absolutely no chance of scoring.

“It just doesn’t make sense. Now the referee’s telling me it’s where the foul took place. It’s a load of nonsense, it’s [not] denying a goalscoring opportunity if he can’t score a goal.

“If our keeper hadn’t have touched him, it wouldn’t have got sucked back to him. It just doesn’t make any kind of sense whatsoever.

“You’re looking for empathy from the officials. There was none tonight. Twenty minutes in, 10 minutes in, OK, we’ve come, we’re blighted with injuries and suspensions, whatever can go against us.

“So we’re taking our time on throw-ins, the crowd are roaring, he’s hurrying us up. Twenty minutes to go and they’re wasting time at 2-0, he’s doesn’t open his mouth.

“Is that because you haven’t got 22,000 fans shouting at you? You’ve got to be consistent for both teams and today we didn’t get a fair crack of the whip. Full stop.

“It’s going to be hard to come here and win with the quality that Ipswich have got. We gave it our very best shot.

“We’re loads of players down, we found out that Sean McConville was suspended today at half-12 [for abusive and insulting language to a match official following the recent Papa Johns Trophy semi-final tie against Bolton Wanderers]. That’s how fair we get treated.

“So it’s going to be hard. I’m not saying the referee determined the game because they were better than us tonight, and they should be.

“Over the last three of four years, they’ve got three of our better players [Kayden Jackson, Janoi Donacien and Cameron Burgess], so they should be.

“But give us a chance. It’s a circus. It’s a circus when we go to a big club because what we do, we get punished for, what they do, they don’t.

“And when Kayden Jackson pulls me at the end of the game and says ‘That wouldn’t even be a yellow for us at Portman Road’, that tells you everything you need to know.”

Regarding his team’s performance, he added: “We passed it a little bit better tonight. Disappointed with the goals because we worked on that one, them getting in on the right-hand channel.

“It’s normally Wes Burns, but we know Kayden’s got the pace. So we’re disappointed that he got in and then he scored.

“And they’ve scored similar goals to that in the last three or four weeks, they must have scored four or five those goals.

“We were thinking we’d keep it to arm’s length for an hour and then throw the two forwards on and try and go and win the game.

“And then we conceded what we think is a very poor goal. He’s run Baba [Fernandes] down the line, possibly hasn’t gone across to close down quick enough. Shot hits the bar, we go to sleep and Kayden finishes.

“But we’ve given a spirited account of ourselves, and that’s all we can do when we come away from home.”

I like how they 'take time' over throw ins etc but we 'waste' time

They must position corner flags in odd places in Accrington.

Sorry but if a goalkeeper makes a reckless challenge outside of the penalty area, it's usually always a red card.

Erm... if Clarke doesn't get taken out (ie he dodges the tackle) the keeper isn't in the net. I would say it could be argued that that would be a DOGSO.

Not interested in a bleating manager, far more interested in this weekend forthcoming fixtures! Barnsley Plymouth: Portsmouth Wednesday and Bolton!!

Just emotional comments from a frustrated manager. Not a straight red imo, certainly a yellow.

I agree with Coleman. It was a Circus, and they were the bunch of clowns who ended up with pies in their faces!

My takeaway from this is that the crowd need to be on the ref's back from minute one. It definitely worked last night.

Talking sh!te Coleman as if Jackson went over to tell him that wouldn't have been a yellow if it was Ipswich

Of course big clubs never get a single bad decision do they. I think we could list a few from this season.

To be fair we had already won the match before the sending off and the great free kick from Edwards so that decision hardly changed the result!

Prior to that, the referee gave so many more decisions against us compared to Accrington so no surprise that bitter Coleman is talking absolute nonsense!

In fairness where I was in CS it wasn't a red card.

However the referee was certainly claiming down on us time wasting and also encroachment from throw ins.

The only circus is Coleman & the rest of his clowns

Just admit it Coleman. Totally outclassed. Your time wasting was evident from the very first throw in and no doubt wo7ld have become progressively worse had the game continued at 0 - 0 for much longer than it did.

If Kayden did say that, he's either let himself down or trying to be gratuitous to a pal. We don't get anything at Portman Rd from refs and if that was Walton racing out and taking a man out, I expect him to see red. Of course it's a goal scoring opportunity, Clarke has only knocked it that far once he's seen the goalkeeper about to clobber him. Coleman's letting himself down here.

Shame JC chose to demean himself ,and officialdom when there are far too many reckless, dangerous tackles going unpunished . Potential damage to human beings should be spotted, carded and eliminated from sport; aggression is one thing , professional and deliberate rule breaking is a curse upon the integrity of sport ,making the job of officiating yet more hazardous .What happened to ‘ the Referee's decision is final ‘ AND ‘play on until the whistle goes ‘ ?
IF a Referee decides a foul is to be punished ,then so be it ! If the level of punishment is wrong ,again so be it ; except ,in the mistaken impression that everything should or can be perfect , we have the demonstrably imperfect intrusion from VAR .
Controversy is a given ,but it's a shame Managers feel it necessary to bleat so ; AS it appears were roundly trounced ,so we can try to ignore JC crying ‘wolf ‘ !

Just that I would be extraordinarily surprised if Jackson said anything of the sort to their manager. And if he did, he's no friend of Jackson for making it public is he?

Thought the ref was favouring them early on. They won free kicks and ref gave us nothing. Fair enough, the red card I think was a bit harsh, but it really didn't affect the outcome that late in the game.

I watched the game and I saw 3 or 4 decisions which went to Accrington when they should have gone to Town. So not too sure what he is bleating at, agree with the red card think it should have been a yellow.

Game was lost and only a minute left so Yellow for me. But great goal from Edwards.

That's given as a red card 95 times out of 100. An easy decision. He has an open goal from 10 yards if not wiped out. Now given he overhits it slighlty it would likely be a tight angle but still a clear opportunity with no keeper. The ref doesn't have to go through complicated mathematics to work out the exact angle given his velocity Vs ball etc. If you are the keeper and you wipe out the attacker with no defenders behind you are getting sent off. Rightly
