Blues Linked With Pompey Striker Bishop
Sunday, 19th Mar 2023 11:22

Town are being linked with a summer move for Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop.

The 26-year-old has scored 22 goals in all competitions for Pompey this season having joined them for £500,000 from Accrington Stanley in the summer.

Now, The Sun on Sunday is claiming the Blues are keeping tabs on the former Notts County, Gloucester, Worcester, Boston United and Leamington frontman ahead of a potential move should they win promotion to the Championship.

Nottingham-born Bishop has been a regular scorer against Town for both Stanley and Portsmouth and netted twice from the spot in his current side’s 3-2 defeat at Portman Road in October and once in the 2-2 draw at Fratton Park just after Christmas.

If we are promoted this season then we should be looking at players who are top half Championship or bottom end Prem quality, not more League One.

We will be linked with Lord Lucan and John F Kennedy before long. Lets get ourselves focused on the"one game at a time" thing before we start thinking about who we might buy if. Might and If are the key words.......

Since the arrival of the current management regime, how many players that we have been ‘linked with' actually arrived at Portman Rd? This is not the way Mark Ashton does business as all his signings have been under the radar until the obligatory photo of the newcomer holding up the famous blue shirt.
Colby Bishop is a competent, proficient League 1 striker but assuming we do reach the Championship next season, I am sure Mr Ashton will be raising his sights far higher than this.

@ Bazza 8564 John Kennedy has already played for us. 8 appearances between 1997 and 1999😄

I like Colby Bishop, he's a good player & a reliable finisher. He is the top of centre forward that would suit us & I wish we had signed him from Accrington in order to help get us get out of League 1.
Having said all that, if we do get up this season & will be playing Championship football come August, I would prefer we make the signing of Hirst permanent, if possible. Hirst works hard & has that little bit of quality that should see him prosper at Championship level, in a side playing to his strengths, where he has been integrated.

We are more likely to buy Hirst.

We're getting over excited again ! – and there's a way to go yet before any transfers can get going !
MA and KM and Co will ,as to date, have outlined for EACH other and the planning team exactly who and what is in mind ,depending on prevailing results and circumstances .
BUT how good it is to have grounds for speculation !

Personally Nixon guessing or a hunch don't believe it's credible before we no what league we are in I guess it's possible Ashton has two lists for both possible outcomes if promotion we will need 3 or 4 top championship or lower end or loan Premier league players.

Can anyone hand on heart say they Know he'd be more than average in the Championship? He might be but if we go up I'd rather we buy players proven at championship level with the potential to step up to the Premiership.

We may not be given the option to buy Hirst…, Leicester clearly still value him and see him as part of their plans, hence tying him down with a new contract last summer before loaning him out.

Hatman, Blackburn's loan deal had an option to buy, he signed a contract to extend his time there to get his wages up and establish a fee to save him moving on for nothing. I sincerely hope MA has got the same option, I'd be surprised if he didnt

Ipswichbusiness, I think our business model will be to buy lesser players, improve them and sell on. So I think a player like Bishop is exactly the type of player we would be looking for. I don't want to be a selling club at all but Leif D fits that model and I think others will too. Gamechanger are here to make £££. I think the buy, improve and sell will be a part of getting to the Premiership. (I hope we get there!!)

Bishop is a proper handful and a good finisher. If we miss out on promotion this season then I think he would be a good singing for next season.

Tbh I'd rather we pushed the boat out to sign Hirst , a much better all round player.

He's a good player could deffo do a job in league one, might do well with decent service in the champ but it's just speculation at the moment, with regards Hirst I'd rather have him next year. For that reason I'm kinda hoping the fixes get relegated this year as it will put that extra pressure on their finances

Why do we need him?

I'd like to think this is an intentional 'leak' to suggest to Leicester we have other irons in the fire if we fancy Hirst in the summer

Don't forget what a completely different league The Championship is. McKenna likes players who have been through premier league youth academies and Ashton likes them young, to have dropped down and have bags of growth in their ability and value. Colby Bishop doesn't fit either of these criteria - he is from a consistently lower league background and hasn't dropped down.

We're all managers on here.....and bl**dy awful ones at that. So which one of our current strikers is gonna drop down the pecking order then? Which striker that we currently laud over is secretly thought of as not being good enough? We should only bring in players that are better than what we currently have, and that isn't the case with the player connected here, and as of today we're still a league one club likely to be involved in the play offs with no guarantee of success. We are as ever a bit unbalanced in our views and getting a little ahead of ourselves.

Bazza8564, us fans and the players especially should be focussing on the next game, but the manager and the recruitment team have to have an eye on the future.

USA, the best way to add value to players is to get promoted.

Europablue; quite right, just look at the way that Flynn Downes' value soared after just one good season in the Championship.
