Nelson's Town Move Off, Set to Join Fulham Friday, 30th Aug 2024 23:00 Town’s late loan move for Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson is off with the winger now set to join tomorrow’s opponents Fulham on loan with the window now closed with the Blues not having added to their senior ranks on deadline day.
The Blues were in advanced talks with the Gunners regarding the 24-year-old but we understand the discussions broke down.
Three other clubs were keen and Fulham subsequently agreed a deal in the final minutes of the window with papers submitted close to the deadline with the authorities expected to rubber-stamp the loan switch overnight.
That means there was no incoming move at Town on deadline day with the Blues not having been able to add another striker to their ranks.
Town manager Kieran McKenna said earlier today that it was “less likely than likely” that the Blues would add a striker than likely and that has proved to be the case.
Talks with Chelsea regarding the loan signing of Armando Broja were revived following the move's collapse yesterday but once again that failed to come to fruition with Town walking away as they were unable to agreed a revised deal.
Subsequently, long-term admirers Everton moved for Broja and are believed to have agreed a deal along the lines of Town's initial terms, although reportedly with an option for a £30 million permanent deal next summer rather than an obligation, which broke down after an achilles injury, which will keep the frontman out of action for around seven weeks, emerged during his medical.
The Blues made an enquiry to Middlesbrough regarding Emmanuel Latte Lath but took the matter no further than that.
The late move for Nelson was a surprise and evidently got some way down the line before the talks broke down.
Town's only addition was young midfielder Tudor Mendel, whose signing for the development squad from Anderlecht will be confirmed next week.
Elsewhere, Freddie Ladapo left the club having had his contract settled, while Marcus Harness joined Derby County on loan and George Edmundson completed a loan switch to Middlesbrough in the final minutes of the window. Young winger Leon Ayinde moved to National League Rochdale on loan.
With no new striker signed, Ali Al-Hamadi has remained at Portman Road, despite interest from Derby and other Championship clubs, and will be the third frontman behind Liam Delap and George Hirst.
The three exits and no 13th summer addition of the summer means the Blues are now at 25 senior players for the 25-man Premier League squad.
In total, Town spent £102.5 million on fees during the window, almost certainly more than has been paid out in the club’s history up to the end of last season.
Speaking earlier today, McKenna summed up his thoughts regarding the window overall, the Blues having made 12 signings.

Was very happy with the business done...but was obvious we needed a striker as I struggle to see any of the three we have scoring a premiership goal. Wasn't worried before as thought Ashton would get a decent deal over the line.....have to admit I am now worried.

Can hardly blame the lad for favouring an established prem club whilst also staying in London.

I would like for the season not to start until the transfer window has closed. It’s distracting and diminishes the opening games where teams can change so radically.

Blues1. It just felt like a panic, lots of names being reported today as Town seemed to be flogging a dead horse with Broja. The reality was as KmK said it was unlikely we would sign anyone.

Martial on a free transfer, he needs a club!

I think the last few hours of the transfer window is just desperation. We have plenty of players and will not need any more pannick buys.

Clearly all the experts on here should have applied for various recruitment positions instead of the ones we've got. Obvious they'd have gotten world class players easily in at the start of the transfer window for the love of playing for the club, young, hungry, tick all boxes, under 21, not big wages, and are already up to speed with integration with the current squad & how we play. Can't be so world class as to be called up to play for country though as that would waste further integration time. Ashton, McKenna & team can clearly learn a few things from them all. Really is that easy apparently. No excuses.

I'm not even going to rise to the moaners. We have had a great transfer window, the players we have bought in and the ones from last year had a combined total goals of over 100. We have Delap and any of our attackers can play false 9, we have a huge amount of pace and noe a very solid back 4 this team has an abundance of talent and now Mckenna get them together and singing off the same hymm sheet. The moaners were saying yesterday we signed too many so perhaps Mckenna read that and took your advice...not! We also have Hirst coming back after the international break, we can even play Chaplin in 9 or Szmodicks and maybe let's keep that number 9 for a Jan signing. Hats off to Mckenna and Ashton, all the pundits say we have done great business. Broja gone to Everton with option for 30 million, wallies, they my tip go down with Wolves and Leicester. Let's get behind the team and our new players and make Portman Road a fortress and for God sake stop moaning, we need this and we need that, I will say it again that our wildest dreams we didn't expect to be here in 2 seasons ago on same fixture day we played Charlton in league one, remember that tomorrow when you see where we are now and the players and talent we have on the pitch! Support not grumble.

Please stop moaning. If we had wanted Broja we had days to get this done - there was clearly a big risk on fitness so we may have dodged a bullet. Nelson is also a winger so would we still be moaning had he joined. I suspect KMcK is more than happy to work with what he has - as others have said we get our goals from everywhere else. This one will play out for the best. THANK YOU MARK ASHTON for all you have done.

Leejames99 - When did we last play a system with a false 9? How did we get on? How effective were our other forwards in that system v playing with a centre forward? Why did we sign Kieffer Moore in January? Why were we looking for Stsnsfield before that? Why have we looked to spend uo to £30m on Armsndo Broja & Fotis Ioannidis this summer? Is it easier to just call anyone with a different point of view to you "a moaner", or "not a real fan" than answer those questions & accept the point that is being made perhaps?

So not on squad: Donacien, Slicker, H Clarke. Donacien and Clarke may come into squad in January or be moved on. Or once Donacien is fit he will be released.

At least we didn't make a last minute panic buy. We do (clearly) need a striker (if not 2 while Hirst is injured). Delap, Hirst (who is long-term injured) and Al-Hamadi are nowhere near strong enough as our strike force right now. I'm assuming we can still navigate the waters of the free transfer market?

Len Brennan - Totally different team now, speed and quality and we have Delap up front Szmodics will play just a roaming role behind him. I think team be 1.Muric 2. Tunnazbe 3. Greaves 4. O' Shea 5. Davis 6. Phillips 7. Morsey 8. Hutchinson 9.Clarke 10. Smodicks 11. Delap That is a team and a half and what platers we have to cone in. Mckenna already said Hirst nearly back. We don't even know if they went for Greek player was paper talk. It's a new team now, it's progression! And no point being negative and moaning as unless someone is on board there is nothing anyone can do the window is shut! Maybe Martial will fancy a game but if not let's just support the team and management and be thankful it's not a rainy game in Harrogate. COYB.

Good I’m glad Al Hamadi is staying & he deserves a chance! We have Delap & Hirst will be back soon. Szmodics can play as a striker aswell what’s the worry. We went for Nelson in the end who is another winger so McKenna must be happy with what he has got upfront. We will score goals all over the pitch. 12 signings is enough & good signings. COYB

When the dust settles we will all say what a great window. Rome was not built in a day.

What if Hirst has a set back and/or Delap gets injured. Delap is young & not used to starting every game. Our forwards are substituted after 60/65 minutes for a reason. We were in for Ioannidis, reported by multiple sources & we've been trying to get Broja in for weeks. As someone else said earlier, I think McKenna/Ashton would sacrifice 2 or 3 of their summer signings now for a centre forward. After spending £110m, it is extraordinary that when the window shuts, our 3 Premier League striker options are all unproven in the Premier League, one of whom is injured, another who was in League 2 last Christmas, & our main man who is 21 & who has never played more than 31 games in a season.

Yes I'm sure they would give up Delap, Szmodicks and Hutchinson for a striker, Broja played loads games scored next to nothing but fit the mould but we didn't get him so we move on with what we have simple, no point in what It's. Many many plays have played little games then stepped up - Cole Palmer for one. Delap was training with Halland etc There will be goals from everywhere. Whoever we got you moan, no point getting a striker in who doesn't fit what we want. We have an abundance of talent and I've no that any of Szmodicks, Hutchinson etc can go in 9 if really needed or if delap out we play Clarke and Hutchinson with Szmodics in middle. So many players are unproven they have to be given a chance. We lost to Maidstone and Wimbledon but still came second in division to get promoted. Just enjoy being a fan and let Mckenna do his job. I suppose one loss the moaners be saying Mckenna out that will be the next thing. As Delboy said what if Millwall won the cup, Man City were in league one not too long ago and I seem to recall James Vardy came through the ranks and oh Leicester one the Prem via his goals. Last I'm entertaining the waffle, I'm a fan and trust in Mckenna and Ashton they have been impeccable, and our signings will prove to be epic. And finally we can take a free transfer so we will see when dust settles if any strikers are available on a free we see but if not there is no worries.Last thing we need is fans putting pressure on the players! We're so lucky to have an abundance of experts on so many subjects including transfers and recruitment on TWTD. Why do our owners bother employing a couple of inexperienced chancers like MA or KM, as there's a wealth of experience and knowledge on TWTD. In all my years on this site, I don't recall so many negative, whinging, so called fans on TWTD. Get behind the team or go support Norwich.
