Martin Frustrated, Angry and Disappointed
Sunday, 22nd Sep 2024 10:14

Southampton manager Russell Martin was left frustrated, angry and disappointed by the Blues’ late leveller at St Mary’s.

Skipper Sam Morsy struck in the fifth minute of injury time to claim Town’s third draw on the bounce.

It’s the first time the Blues have drawn three successive games in the Premier League since October 2001, a streak which coincidentally ended with a 3-3 draw with the Saints in Hampshire when the home side’s XI included Rory Delap, father of Town striker Liam, and also included a 1-1 stalemate with Fulham, although at Craven Cottage rather than Portman Road.

“My overriding feeling is just frustration and I'm a bit angry and disappointed really,” Martin said.

“We scored a great goal in the first half. Ipswich had too many moments from set plays and in the second phase because we couldn't quite clean the game up enough.

“We had a really good chance with Cam [Archer] and some really good moments that didn't come to enough.

“But I really liked a lot of the performance. I thought the lads came out brilliantly and started the second half so well.

“We have another big chance with Cam and a few moments with Ben [Brereton-Diaz] — we should put the game to bed really.

“Ipswich had two shots on target in the second half and that was in the 96th minute and they scored from one of them. So That's the disappointing thing.

“I thought we were really good second half but you have to score the second goal and if you don't you have to defend the set play properly and It shouldn't come to that.

“It was a really poor set piece to give away. It's about game management and there's too much anxiety in the team.”

The 18th-placed Saints remain winless with their point against the Blues their first of the season.

Former Norwich City captain Martin, who is still to win game against Town as a manager with either Southampton or MK Dons, says when he reviews the game he’ll probably be pleased with the overall display.

“I'm sure I'll be so happy about a lot of it,” he continued. “I'm angry right now as you can see. Conceding on 96 minutes, of course, you're going to be furious and not very happy about it.

“We are getting better and better every game. I really feel that. We have to continue progressing and getting better.

“It's so tight down there that the league will be so tight for a long long time. We just need to keep performing and getting better, but make sure we turn it into wins.”

Regarding 18-year-old goalscorer Tyler Dibling, Martin added: “He was brilliant again, he needs to get to a place where he can play 90 minutes as he was cramping up, but he is 18 and can do things other players can’t do. I would pay a lot of money to watch him play football.”

I thought his assessment of the game was pretty fair. We do seem to have some luck when playing them.

There are a lot of positives he can take from their performance. It is a very tough league. If they are the worst team in it then we are in for a very difficult season.

Yeah right!
ITFC dominated first 25,had plenty of efforts on target and finished the stronger

Seen enough to be confident Ipswich will stay up,
not so sure about your lot

I'd love to bottle that feeling I got when I saw the SKY vidiprinter at about 4.50pm yesterday show Morsy's equaliser. I was picturing thousands of Southampton fans throwing things at the wall..

His assessment of the second half is correct because Southampton were the better team but he conveniently avoids any reference to the first half where we were on top but they scored against the run of play. I get his anger/frustration though, being that close to winning the game. We got the point we deserved though.

This guy when it comes to the match analysis spends his time ignoring the truth. I suppose it makes his efforts look better to the Southampton board, or so he perhaps thinks. The bottom line is, Muric had just 2 saves to make, compared to Martin’s keeper who was forced to pull off several desperate saves to keep his ailing side in the game.

Simple analysis would be we had a great first half and they dominated the second half, so a draw a fair result. Omari‘s shot was a belter.

I’ll take the away point and the three match unbeaten run, bring on Villa, no easy games this season!

Blokes a tosser We seemed to have had the better chances in the game overall and everybody seems to be afraid to mention Axel gifted them the first goal.

A good high press led ro the Tuanzebe mistake and Greaves lunged at the pass which made Dibley's task much easier. He took his chance well. We were well on top in the first half and I think a draw was a fair result. Southampton defended the corner so badly, we had three players on the edge of the box and none were marked. The deflection was the only thing, it seemed, was going to beat Ramsdale, who had an outstanding game. I get Martin's frustration, the points were all but in the bag and then they defend the corner really poorly and they invited misfortune. Tough home game next so let's get right behind the lads and hopefully get rewarded with a point or three.
