McKenna: Phillips Back in Training
Friday, 27th Sep 2024 14:48

Town boss Kieran McKenna says midfielder Kalvin Phillips trained today and a decision will be made on how long the on-loan Manchester City man can play against Aston Villa on Sunday, while third-choice keeper Cieran Slicker is out for a few weeks.

Phillips missed last week’s 1-1 draw at Southampton with a minor thigh problem.

Nathan Broadhead returned to training last week after suffering a hamstring injury.

“Kalvin has trained with the group today, so we make a judgement on how many minutes he's available for and Nathan has been training well for the last week or so, so we've almost got a fully fit squad,” said McKenna, who is pleased to have all his outfield players fit.

“It's good. We were short in the summer for different reasons, but as the weeks went on, the group's coming together and getting stronger in numbers and in every other capacity.

“We have good depth at the moment and everyone's competing to be involved and also knowing that those who don't get on the pitch in any given weekend have a big part to play.”

The only player sidelined at present is keeper Slicker: “Cieran Slicker’s got little injury at the moment, so he’s going to be out for a few weeks with a hand injury.”

Does that mean Harry Clarke is available too? I'd like to see what he can do now the achilles injuries are sorted. I think he adds a lot to the squad.

Sorry Prof, but I think Harry Clarke will be found out in this League.

McKenna said Clarke would be able to play in an emergency last weekend so I’m assuming he’s closer to fitness. As for him being found out at this level Carberry.. I’m not so sure. Technically he’s a good footballer and certainly wouldn’t have spent his time at Arsenal being guided and trained in anything but how to play at the top level. There are some question marks about his defensive decision making but If he’s not good enough it won’t be down to lack of effort or desire. Worse players than him have had long top flight careers.

No question about his effort, Monkey. Just don't think he has the ability to make good decisions quickly which is a huge drawback in the Prem when facing quality wide players. If he does play it may pose a serious question mark against Johnson who should be a regular with his experience and the money we are reported to be paying him!

Johnson has so far been the most underwhelming new player for me, just too light in duels and not 100% in it to win it.

We will need Phillips on Sunday if we are going to compete with Villa it takes so much pressure off Morsy.

Carberry - I suggest we give Harry a chance in this league. There were plenty of folk ruling out our players in the championship, however they were given a chance/trusted and they proved their worth. Some players will step up (given opportunities), some won’t. If you don’t try you don’t know.

We'll wait and see when clarke gets his chance. Davis on the other side .. our best player last season has struggled for me so far.

I could see Clarke going out on loan as I don't think given the surgery and time out he'll be that close to action and being thrown in to Prem. Hopefully a run out in fa cup and assessed between now and Jan but wouldn't surprise me either way if he stays or gets a loan. He's still young and lots of potential and improvement in him.
