Town Agree Philogene Fee
Wednesday, 8th Jan 2025 22:12

Town have agreed a fee of £20 million plus add-ons with Aston Villa for forward Jaden Philogene, who is set to undergo a medical and complete the formalities regarding his permanent move to the Blues on Thursday.

The 22-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Town and will become the club’s second signing of the January transfer window.

Philogene has long been a Town target with links first surfacing in the summer of 2023 before the England U21 international moved from Aston Villa to Hull City.

In July last year, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with the Tigers for the forward and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million and the player having agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But since then Philogene has made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances.

Town and Everton, another of the clubs interested in the summer, both made approaches at the start of this window with the Blues stealing a march on the Toffeemen.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Londoner agreed to sign following a personal phone call with manager Kieran McKenna.

Philogene, who primarily plays on the left side, will be at the club on Thursday morning to undergo a medical and complete his switch.

The initial fee of £20 million fee is just below the club record figure of £22 million paid to Chelsea for Omari Hutchinson in the summer.

The Blues are in the market for a number of forwards this window with a number nine a priority and two players for the roles behind on the list.

On Friday, Liverpool rebuffed a £16 million offer for Ben Doak, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough, with Crystal Palace also having made a bid.

We understand the Blues are maintaining their pursuit of the 19-year-old with the Eagles similarly continuing their interest with the Reds said to want a fee between £25 and £30 million.

Another potentially very good signing, especially when KM and his team work their coaching magic. So welcome to Town Jaden.

On another note I say go for broke and get Doak! (within FFP rules of course!). Seen him play 3 times, including a game for Scotland about 3 months ago against Croatia, when he absolutely destroyed Josko Gvardiol. Just 19, quick, pretty strong and tricky. I can only imagine again what KM could do for him.

The money we are spending is incredible. Delap, Hutch, Sammie, Ogbene, Clarke and Philogene… that’s over £100m on our frontline alone. Just a couple of those would be more than our combined spending in the clubs history. Incredible the investment in our club!

Personally prefer this to the Billy Jean inspired song:

Philogene is magic, he wears a magic hat,
He used to play for Villa, but then he said f••• that,
He passes with his left foot, he passes with his right,
And when we stay in the league, we'll sing this song all night.

Was a skeptic (because of shenanigans on the 1st attempt), but everyone seems exited, Everton fans disappointed, and we know KmK has been keen for a while, so a lot to be happy about!

That's a record signing isn't it (if you include potential addon)? If he's anywhere near as impactful as Omari - exciting times ahead!

Great news. Shame that Villa and his agent were happy to mess with his career for financial gain. Seems to me they only exercised their buy back clause for financial gain. Just the way of the modern game I guess.

Great to see K.M's words "we want to get business done early" being backed up C.O.Y.B.

Exciting signing this taking the spending so far to over 120 million (reported) and with the continued pursuit of Others where is our limit within PSR? I dont pretend to understand how it works, but we must be scarily close to that limit?

On another note i hate scum fans (not all) some think Godfrey is a cart horse with no football brain others have said they would welcome him back. It was nice saying to them he wanted to play in the top division and you are a second division club and couldn't afford him!

Welcome Jaden!

Love the ambition, love the strategy, lets build this team around McKenna, lets make it clear we can be where Forest are in 2-3 years time, lets give him no reason to want to leave this football club for a good few years, because he can take us right back to the top.

As for PSR - it isn't an issue as long as we stay in the Prem. Recent performances and results have boosted confidence that we will survive, and the only thing that could have stopped that would be a thin squad that couldn't cope with injuries/suspensions. It speaks volumes about the club's ambition, we now look like we are building for the second season in the Prem.

When I first heard the news we might be back in for him I was a bit skeptical. He'd already turned us down before and wasn't sure his heart would be in it and just see it as an escape from not playing at Villa. Having thought about it further, unlike in the Summer - where he may have assumed we'd be in a relegation dogfight and didn't fancy it - he's now coming on the full knowledge that we are fighting and he's still happy to sign - that's a real positive for me. Also, the fact that we have gone back in for him proves this is a player the KMc thinks is a blooming good player.
