Carrick: Edmundson Deal Needs to Be Right For All Parties Wednesday, 22nd Jan 2025 11:17 Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick says a deal to sign Blues defender George Edmundson on a permanent basis needs to be right for all parties.
As revealed by TWTD last night, Edmundson returned to Town yesterday, the Blues having activated the 24-hour recall in the season-long loan deal prior to a Monday deadline.
Town have turned down two offers for the 27-year-old, the second an initial £500,000 plus £350,000 if Boro are promoted this season and further top-ups.
The Blues’ options are limited by Edmundson not being able to play for a third team this season, having featured briefly for Town at Manchester City in August as well as the Teessiders.
If he doesn’t return to Boro, then he will spend the rest of the season at Town, probably surplus to requirements and not in the 25-man squad but with the Blues paying his wages.
He is out of contract at the end of the season when he will be available on a free with a number of other Championship clubs understood to have been impressed by his performances with Boro.
“We knew it was a possibility. We didn't know when it might come,” Carrick told Teesside Live regarding the recall.
“The ball was in their court in terms of that situation. What happens next, we'll have to wait and see.
“It's not long happened so we'll explore what happens next. It's something we'll look at for sure. George has done well but it needs to be right for all parties so we'll see how that goes.”
Carrick, a close friend of Town manager Kieran McKenna from their time working together at Manchester United and as players at Tottenham, says the recall didn’t come as too much of a shock.
“We were aware of it and we knew it was a possibility,” he added. “It’s the case with a lot of loans that there is a cut-off point before the deadline.
“We knew it was a possibility before tonight and we planned for the game with that in mind, so it didn’t affect preparation for the game too much.
“We knew it was a possibility, so he wasn’t going to start tonight’s game anyway, just in case. It is what it is. Sometimes you’re fully in control, sometimes you’re not and you’ve got to adapt.”

Surely worth £500k now, than to pay his wages and then lose him for nothing in the summer?

Ashton's certainly playing a dangerous game on this one.

We're just wrong here, and have no bargaining position...unless we move Woolfendon on and register George. Otherwise, we have just totally screwed a good guy.

From the info available at this moment in time sounds ridiculous! Wonder if this has anything to do with the latte saga?

It's more of a win,win situation for Edmundson than it is for Town now as if he stays with us he gets paid until the end of the season and then can go on a free and negotiate his own terms with another club. Or he goes to Borough with no doubt some sort of signing on fee. As for Town if the 500 k fee is true with a £350,000 if they get promoted isn't a bad deal given his initial cost, age and the fact he can go for nothing in a few months. Seems mad, but then are these figures correct ?

Lack of class shown by whoever is trying to get what is, in the light of the amount we're throwing about on incoming transfers, a relative pittance more out of this sale, but that's Premier League all over.

Seeing as our club have made no comment as yet it seems a bit unfair to be moaning about not letting him go straight away. Chances are he is moving on this window, more than likely Boro once a price Town are willing to accept, and that will be the end of it. Saying it's a lack of class is laughable, as is talking about 'a relative pittance'.

In my opinion, I don’t think George will be hanging around at Ipswich. I think there’s a good possibility that he was brought back because there’s more than one Championship club interested in him. Once back, the bidding will commence, and I think he’ll be transferred very soon. Wherever he ends up, I hope he enjoys the move, he did a great job for us on and off the pitch, so good luck George, and thank you.

@poet, he can’t play for another club this season so what would other clubs be bidding on?

Imagine if we turned down £500,000 minimum, pay all his wages for the rest of the season and then let him walk on a free. Hopefully someone gives us what we want.

Juggsy, yes I’m wrong to say that there may be more than one club interested, but I reiterate what I said previously about him not hanging around at Ipswich. In my opinion that won’t happen. I think Town will accept an offer from Middlesbrough. I find it difficult to believe that anyone would seriously think that Ipswich would keep him on their books and have to continue to pay his wages, whilst he couldn’t play. Then, at the end of the season, have to allow him to leave on a free.

Juggsy, I think you need to read the report again. Why do you think Middlesbrough made two offers for him? The only club that he can now play for is Middlesbrough. Quote paragraph 5 - “f he doesn’t return to Boro, then he will spend the rest of the season at Town, probably surplus to requirements and not in the 25-man squad but with the Blues paying his wages”.

Juggsy, Ipswich are the first club, Middlesbrough are the second club. According to the rules he can’t play for a third club. So theoretically, he could still play for Ipswich, that appears very unlikely, so it looks like the second club he’s played for, I.e. Middlesbrough, will now buy him. The alternative, I.e. him sitting at Ipswich and doing nothing would be ludicrous, and quite frankly, unimaginably stupid.

Can we swap him for Latte (plus cash), remember the days when transfers involved two players moving in the opposite direction

So many armchair managers who know better than the club! Wolfy is out of contract in the summer and has lots of suitors, perhaps we're happy to keep Edmundson as backup if Wolfy is sold? Regardless, most transfer dealings these days come down to brinkmanship, I'm sure if the situation doesn't change he'll be sold to Boro in the last 48 hours of the window. Either way, we're showing we are no mugs and will not be dictated to by anyone else. That's worth more than £500k on it's own in terms of future transfer wranglings...
